    Enemies of the American way:: identity and presidential foreign policymaking, 1885-1901

    This dissertation asks and answers the question, "Why do threat identifications vary among presidents?" It considers four plausible explanations for differences in threat identification and concludes that a new approach, a rule-based (RBI) theory of threat identification, provides the most useful answer. The RBI approach posits that American identity is subjectively defined and varies among individuals. By analyzing the constitutive rules that a president uses to describe American identity, RBI theory explains the variation in the types of behavior that each president identifies as threatening. This dissertation concludes that how a president conceptualizes American identity will influence the types of threats he identifies. Its findings are based on a comparative case study of the presidents of the late nineteenth century. After examining the foreign policies of Grover Cleveland, Benjamin Harrison, and William McKinley, this study concludes that their different constructions of American identity account for disagreements over the British, German, and Spanish threats during the period studied. This dissertation and the RBI approach offer a novel and effective means for understanding late nineteenth century American foreign policy and put forward a template that can be applied to other eras, including the post-Cold War world.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical references (p. 347-368)

    Flow behaviour of liquid crystalline phases of branched chain glycolipids / Azwa Amanina Mislan

    Increase in environmental awareness has led to the demand of alternatives for the commercially available chemical surfactant. Glycolipids, being low toxicity, biodegradable and showing surface activity have became one of the candidate for alternatives which known as biosurfactants. In this study, glucose and maltose are attached to the Guerbet alcohol; 2-hexyl-1-decanol through glycosidic linkage to form branched chain glycolipid namely 2-hexyl-decyl-β-D-glucoside (β-Glc-C10C6) and 2-hexyl-decyl-β-D-maltoside (β-Mal-C10C6) respectively. The effect of different head group size on the thermotropic and lyotropic mesophases was investigated. The mesophases were determined by optical polarizing microscopy and small angle X-ray scattering. β-Mal-C10C6 only shows lamellar (Lα) phase in both conditions. The shear viscosity test indicates all mesophases in thermotropic and lyotropic conditions exhibits shear thinning behaviour. All rheological measurements were obtained in the linear viscoelastic regime. In general, the viscoelastic studies on thermotropic A rheometer was used to investigate the flow behaviour of β-Glc-C10C6 that exhibits inverse hexagonal phase (H2) and inverse bicontinuous cubic phases (Ia3d and Pn3m) in thermotropic and lyotropic conditions respectively. H2 (β-Glc-C10C6) and Lα (β-Mal-C10C6) phases show that G’ and G” increase with the frequency indicating the typical viscoelastic response for non-Newtonian fluid at the selected temperatures. The lyotropic inverse bicontinuous cubic of β-Glc-C10C6 containing different water concentrations shows the dominance of G’ over G” at the range of frequency and temperature tested. A similar finding was observed for lyotropic Lα phase of β-Mal-C10C6 but with a lower magnitude of structural strength

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Isolation, characterization and determination of cell concentration in silicate producing bacteria / Ainul Asywanie Mislan

    Silicate producing bacteria play an efficient role in soil by solubilizing the insoluble forms of minerals like magnesium trisilicate that exist in earth's crust. A total of five different bacteria were obtained and one of the isolated bacteria from bauxite soil sample known as the BI bacteria was characterized by morphological observation, biochemical identification, screened for the solubilization of silicate on silicate medium besides the effect of cell concentration in enhancing the silicate absorption also being evaluated. All the five bacterial isolates were capable in solubilizing the insoluble minerals in medium. The most clear solubilization zone was observed in BI and ST5 including the positive control (Bacillus sp.). The results show that BI and ST5 give clear zone of solubilisation. BI is Gram positive, aerobic, rod shape with endospore and capsule. ST5 is Gram negative, facultative anaerobic, rod in shape with endospore. Both are acid production and both exhibit the similar colony characteristics to silicate group bacteria. The biochemical tests indicate that the bacterial isolates are similar to genus Bacillus. The capability of bacterial isolates (BI and ST5) to have absorbed silica to its cell wall by different concentration of bacterial cell which ranged from the optical density of 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 shows there are no significance effect of different cell concentration at p ~ 0.05 neither on silicate absorption nor weight of pelleted cell. BI with the absorption of silicate up to 44.5 mM is the most prominent candidate to be silicate producing bacteria. The capability of silicate bacteria to consolidate sand can be use in ecological engineering purpose in the future and leading to biomineralization
