An extension of a theorem by C. Miranda in weighted spaces

    No full text
This paper extends a well-known theorem of C. Miranda concerning a priori estimates of weak solutions of linear elliptic equations with discontinuous coefficients in a bounded open subset of R^n . We derive such estimates in weighted spaces in an open subset of R^n under conditions more weak compared to those considered in a previous paper

Charinus bichuetteae Giupponi & Miranda, 2016 Fig. 27; Table 2 Charinus bichuetteae Giupponi & Miranda, 2016: 23–25, figs 2h, 3h, 11a–f. Diagnosis Based on Giupponi & Miranda (2016), this species may be separated from other Charinus in Amazonia and northern South America by means of the following combination of characters: tegument pale yellow in color; median eyes and median ocular tubercle absent; lateral eyes well developed; small, rounded, markedly sclerotized tetra- and pentasternum; cushion-like female gonopod with lateral projections directed posteriorly, covering opening of internal seminal receptacles (atrium); pedipalp femur with two dorsal spines and three ventral spines; pedipalp tarsus with two spines, proximal spine small, ca one quarter length of distal spine; tibia of leg I with 21 articles, tarsus I with 37 articles; leg IV basitibia with two pseudo-articles; trichobothrium bt situated in proximal third of distitibia; leg IV distitibia with 16 trichobothria; trichobothrium bc situated closer to sbf than to bf. Charinus bichuetteae is one of ten species of Charinus in Amazonia and northern South America in which the basitibia of leg IV consists of two pseudo-articles; the others are C. bonaldoi, C. brescoviti, C. bromeliaea, C. carvalhoi sp. nov., C. camachoi, C. pardillalensis, C. platnicki, C. quinteroi and C. ricardoi. Charinus bichuetteae differs from C. bromeliaea and C. carvalhoi sp. nov. in the cushionlike gonopods, which are sucker-like in C. bromeliaea and in C. carvalhoi sp. nov. The absence of median eyes and ocular tubercle differentiates C. bichuetteae from C. brescoviti and C. bromeliaea. Seven of these species lack median eyes and median ocular tubercle, and can be differentiated from C. bichuetteae by the number of teeth on the cheliceral claw and the number of spines on the pedipalp femur. Etymology Patronym honoring Dr Maria Elina Bichuette (Giupponi & Miranda 2016). Type material Holotype BRAZIL • ♂; Pará, Vitória do Xingu Municipality, AL 44, Gruta do China; 9 Jul. 2009; D. Ave Maria and Regina Coeli, by Ronaldo Miranda: interpretative paths

    No full text
This work outlines the investigative path of a conductor who proposes to study the works Ave Maria and Regina Coeli, by the composer Ronaldo Miranda. To this end, I resort to different sources of information of musicological orientation and of a narrative-artistic nature as a way of, through a multiplicity of perspectives, creating plots that lead to the understanding of the process of conception and construction of the performance of this repertoire. The research aims to: a) reveal, through different data and narratives, the different views regarding the conception and construction of musical interpretation and b) show how different types of knowledge contribute to my understanding of a repertoire. Thus, I carried out: a) a musicological survey about the composer through academic works that dealt with him; b) a research on his musical formation; and c) a study on his compositional periods, in order to understand the historical context of Miranda in a three-dimensional way. Subsequently, I carried out an analytical dive into the works listed here, seeking compositional characteristics. In a second moment, I worked on narratives of the composer himself and of conductors who have already conducted these pieces, in order to reveal and understand their points of view on the process of construction of the performance when the score reaches their hands. Based on these data, I could see that Ronaldo has recurring peculiarities in his writing for choir from a melodic, harmonic, textural and prosodic point of view. I also identified the relationship of his writing oriented to elements of Gregorian chant. The narratives also revealed diversified processes of preparing the works for the rehearsal, focused on the choir profile to be directed. I could find consonance in the conductors\' speech about how they see themselves today in relation to earlier moments in their careers. We observe musical aspects that can generate interpretive freedom on the part of the conductor at the time of performance

Facial Uplift: Plastic Surgery, Cosmetics, and the Retailing of Whiteness in the Work of Maria Cristina Mena

    No full text
This article analyzes how Mexican American author María Cristina Mena’s short magazine fiction boldly illustrates the emerging U.S. beauty industry as effectively producing whiteness for sale in the neocolonial marketplace. Her representations of Mexican women’s use of cosmetics articulate how the beauty industry both lends structure to and is structured by the idea of race; at the same time, she reminds her audience that the impact of beauty products and services is in large part determined by the political and economic context of the goods themselves. Through the techniques of role reversals, character development and dramatic irony, Mena’s stories portray the U.S. beauty industry as a dynamic trade that exports new forms of whiteness across its southern border. Far from depicting Mexican women as passive consumers in the neocolonial marketplace, however, Mena shows how beauty products and services can be appropriated as limited yet potent acts of resistance. This article was published as Schuller, Kyla. Delegated Portfolio Management

    No full text
In this paper, we examine optimal portfolio decisions within a decentralized framework. There are many portfolio managers choosing optimal portfolio weights in a mean-variance framework and taking decisions in a decentralized way. However, the overall portfolio may not be efficient, as the portfolio managers do not take into account the overall covariance matrix. We show that the initial endowment that portfolio managers can use within the firm in order to manage their portfolios can be used as a control variable by the top administration and redistributed within the firm in order to achieve overall efficiency.
