    Al-Haq

    No full text
Established in Ramallah in 1979, al-Haq was the first Palestinian human rights organization and one of the first such organizations in the Arab world. This inside history explores how al-Haq initiated methodologies in law and practice that were ahead of its time and that proved foundational for many strands of today’s human rights work in Palestine and elsewhere. Lynn Welchman looks at both al-Haq’s history and legacy to explore such questions as: Why would one set up a human rights organization under military occupation? How would one go about promoting the rule of law in a Palestinian society deleteriously served by the law and with every reason to distrust those charged with implementing its protections? How would one work to educate overseas allies and activate international law in defense of Palestinian rights? This revelatory story speaks to the practice of local human rights organizations and their impact on international groups. “This book is a godsend. A perfect example of precisely the kind of research that is most needed now, at a moment when human rights have never been more delegitimized on the international stage and abuses more rampant across the Middle East and North Africa.” — MARK LEVINE, author of Heavy Metal Islam: Rock, Resistance, and the Struggle for the Soul of Islam “Clear, concise, accessible, and detailed, this unique book sheds extensive light on how and why al-Haq developed as it did. And in doing so it offers original material on the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories, the development of the human rights movement in Palestine and globally, and the creation and management of civil society organizations.” — MOUIN RABBANI, coeditor of Jadaliyya and former Senior Analyst and Special Advisor on Palestine, International Crisis Grou

The contribution of international trade to economic growth through human capital accumulation: Evidence from nine Asian countries

    No full text
This study is an attempt to test the hypothesis “international trade contributes to economic growth through its effects on human capital accumulation.” To assess the hypothesis empirically, we employed the extended Neo-Classical growth model that reflects some features of the endogenous growth models. We thus ended up with a model in which the change in human capital is sensitive to change in trade policies. Unlike conventional approaches, the model serves to assess and determine the impact of international trade on the accumulation of human capital. The empirical analysis estimates dynamic panel growth equations by using a data-set of nine Asian countries, over the period 1972–2012. The overall evidence substantiates the fact that in countries under consideration, international trade enhances the accumulation of human capital and contributes to economic growth positively through human capital accumulation

The coronavirus epidemic has become one of the major health concerns all over the world recently. Like other strains of coronavirus, this strain also spreads through a droplet-based transmission that is the main cause of its worldwide spread. Several trials of antiviral medicines related to the control of the virus have already begun globally but still one of the main problems is the lack of a viable treatment option. An extensive amount of research is still taking place to organize the data associated with genomics and proteomics of its original strain SARS-CoV-2 alongside other mutant strains. This review summarizes the related up-to-date research that is going on the structural organization of the genome and proteome of the virus. *Corresponding Author: Ehsan Ul Haq; Email: [email protected]; [email protected] Please cite this article as: Ul Haq E. The field of education is witnessing rapid developments in information technology, with aug-mented reality (AR) emerging as a promising tool for multi-media learning, including Arabic language recognition. Among the Semitic language families, Arabic has the largest number of speakers. Arabic is the sentence that Arabs use to express their intentions and purposes. The form is in the form of hijaiyah letters that are used by Arabs for oral and written social interaction and communication. Madrasah diniyah takmiliyah ardal-haq is located on the main road of pematang moss, betara sub-district, West Tan-jung Jabung district, Jambi Province as one of the elementary schools, at the Ardhal-haq Madrasah, the way of delivering learning is still using simple methods, using books that do not have pictures. it is known that in general students and female students feel bored with Arabic language teaching offered by educational institutions, because students face challenges in understanding written language, including phonetics and syntax. The author chooses to use the MDLC (Multimedia Development Life Cycle) method to conduct research by creating Augmented Reality-based educational applications for Arabic language teaching. This method can be applied to system development in multimedia applications and its stages can be changed based on the research needs, which is why the author used it for system development. The purpose of this research is to facilitate the mastery of Arabic language by students and support instructors of Ardhal-Haq Madrasah in their classroom teaching. With this research produces an Augmented Reality-based Arabic language introduction educational application

Occupational Profile of Poverty in Pakistan

    No full text
The issue of poverty in Pakistan has its significance for sustainable development. Long run development is not possible without protecting the rights of the vulnerable groups and the participation of the entire population in the development process. A notable development in the last decade in Pakistan’s economic scene has been the sharp pick up in the incidence of poverty. It can be attributed to several factor. The real GDP growth fell from 6 percent in the 1980s to 5 percent in the first half of the 1990s and declined further to just over 4 percent in the second half of the decade. The rate of inflation remained in single digits throughout the 1980s but had a rapid increase of 12 percent during the first half of the 1990s. It is significant to note that food prices generally rose more sharply than overall consumer price index. The unemployment rate increased by 2 percent in the 1990s as compared to in the 1980s reflecting the deceleration of labour absorption in the economy in response to the significant decrease in the economic growth during the nineties.

The views expressed in this series are those of the authors, and should not be quoted without their permission. Comments are welcome, and should be sent to the corresponding author. Abstract Objective To provide robust estimates of EQ-5D as a function of the Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ) and pain in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Method Repeated observations of patients diagnosed with RA in a US observational cohort (n=100,398 observations) who provided data on HAQ, pain on a visual analogue scale and the EQ-5D questionnaire. We use a bespoke mixture modelling approach to appropriately reflect the characteristics of the EQ-5D instrument and compare this to results from linear regression. Results The addition of pain alongside HAQ as an explanatory variable substantially improves explanatory power. The preferred model is a four component mixture. Unlike the linear regression it exhibits very good fit to the data, does not suffer from problems of bias or predict values outside the feasible range. Conclusions It is appropriate to model the relationship between HAQ and EQ-5D but only if suitable statistical methods are applied. Linear models underestimate the QALY benefits, and therefore the cost effectiveness, of therapies. The bespoke mixture model approach outlined here overcomes this problem. The addition of pain as an explanatory variable greatly improves the estimates.

Effects of switching between anti-TNF therapies on HAQ response in patients who do not respond to their first anti-TNF drug

Objectives. Small studies have shown an improvement in disease activity in patients with RA who have switched between anti-TNF therapies for reasons of inefficacy. However, it is not clear whether switching improves longer term outcomes, such as disability. This analysis compares changes in HAQ scores 1 yr following lack of response to a first anti-TNF based on subsequent treatment during that year. Methods. Analysis was limited to RA patients with inefficacy to a first anti-TNF based on (i) clinician opinion and/or (ii) disease activity score in 28 joints and had an HAQ measured at time of non-response and 12 months later. Patients were classified into three groups based on treatment during the next 12 months: (i) continued anti-TNF despite non-response; (ii) stopped anti-TNF with no further biologics; and (iii) switched to a second anti-TNF. Mean improvement in HAQ was compared among the groups using multivariable linear regression models. Results. As of July 2006, 868 patients met the inclusion for this analysis. Four hundred and seventy-nine patients stopped anti-TNF of whom 331 switched to a second anti-TNF. Three hundred and eighty-nine continued treatment. Patients who continued and those who switched had improvements in HAQ over the 12 months, unlike patients who discontinued all biologic therapy. The best improvement was seen in those who switched [adjusted mean improvement in HAQ 0.15 (95% CI 0.26, 0.05)]. Conclusion. There is a significant improvement in HAQ in patients who switch to a second anti-TNF, providing an effective next choice of therapy for some patients who fail to respond to their first anti-TNF. © 2008 The Author(s)
