Building Techniques and Environmental Stewardship of the First Indigenous Peoples of South Africa
[EN] This paper examines the construction techniques applied to self-built houses in the village of Zaaimanshoek, located in the remote Baviaanskloof, a valley in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. The village and dwellings were the main subject of a research project led by Prof. Magda Minguzzi in collaboration with First Nations leaders, staff, and students at Nelson Mandela University. It examines how traditional construction techniques, still practised by the First Nations People, prioritise low embodied energy in construction, material reuse, and a deep respect for environmental balance. These practices not only address environmental challenges but also preserve cultural heritage, laying a sustainable foundation for future generations. There is an inseparable link between construction, culture, and ecology, illustrating how architecture can serve as a living record of cultural heritage. Through community-driven methodologies and knowledge-sharing, the study documents the continued relevance of these practices, fostering a sense of belonging and continuity within the community. This paper further explores the value of Indigenous Knowledge Systems in the built environment and their ongoing role in sustainable construction. By safeguarding these techniques and recognising their contributions, the research supports both cultural preservation and environmental stewardship. The study also presents a detailed technical analysis of these construction methods, emphasising their structural integrity, efficiency, and adaptability for contemporary use. These techniques have been passed down through generations; they minimise waste, maintain environmental balance, and offer valuable insights for sustainable architectural practices. Preserving these skills is essential for protecting cultural heritage and advancing environmentally responsible building solutions that reduce the environmental impact of modern construction. Documenting and Studying the First Indigenous Peoples of South Africa’s Villages and Dwellings in Baviaanskloof, Applying an Indigenous Methodology
[EN] This contribution will speak about a research project developed at the Nelson Mandela University, School of Architecture, with the aim to document, study, and raise awareness of Indigenous villages and their wattle and daub dwellings. These dwellings, which had never been studied before, are examples of vernacular architecture and are located in a remote area of the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. The Indigenous knowledge system applied to building these structures has been passed down from generation to generation from pre-colonial times up to the present. This being the case despite the long history of the First Indigenous Peoples’ – the San and Khoikhoi – displacement from their territory and forced removal from their homes, which started with the arrival of the settler colonisers. The project, which started in 2021 and is currently in progress, is conducted in collaboration with a team of Chiefs and community members of the San and Khoikhoi peoples. The research methodology in use has its foundations in the holistic Indigenous worldview. This ethically sound process is rooted in principles of mutual trust and accountability, respect for each other’s views and cooperation in the research decision process, reciprocal knowledge product appropriation, and use of Indigenous protocols toward the right of Indigenous Peoples to retain full control of their knowledge. The core phases of the research project and the methods applied will be discussed with a specific focus on the relationship and involvement with the First Indigenous Leaders and community members in the process of investigation. This work is based on the research supported by the National Research Foundation of South Africa (Grant Numbers: 116254); Vernacular Architecture Group; EWAP-Oxford Brookes University (Grant Number: SM2008).Minguzzi, M. SIMONE DE BEAUVOIR, UNA LECTURA TRANSMODERNA
Framing it in her own memories and from a personal prism, Magda initially approaches the figure of Beauvoir considering the author in the autobiography of her work, and dwelling on her relationships and the tandem formed with Sartre. Once the person is considered, Magda turns to the author, entering into a discussion of "The Second Sex", and critically reviewing many of the positions adopted by Beauvoir in this work. Lastly, Magda analyzes the situation of a “transmodern feminism” examining its link with movements such as Existentialism and highlighting the challenges that still remain today regarding the conceptions that shape the image of women.

Architectural Memory: Créole Houses as Living Monuments in Port Louis, Mauritius
[EN] This study examines the vernacular architecture of Port Louis in Mauritius island through Créole houses. These houses development because the early architecture of the French colony on the island was not adequately adapted to tropical climate and material resources. Over centuries, the Créole houses have adjusted to the local materials, economy, climate, and culture of the island. The enslaved who were the primary builders of these houses, contributed immensely to the vernacular adaptations. Yet, Créole houses remain understudied despite representing an architectural heritage which links Mauritius to the global network of the French empire and to Africa and Asia. The study seeks to catalogue Créole houses through an examination of their architectural elements, typologies, and craftsmanship. Using archival research, field surveys, and oral histories, this research sheds light on how the enslaved adapted colonial design principles, through their Indigenous Knowledge Systems, to create structures suited to the tropics. One of the research outputs for this study is the first definition of Créole houses in Kreol Morisien. This study will not only provide a visual but also a local architectural vocabulary in Kreol Morisien and contribute to the broader discourse on the preservation of vernacular heritage in postcolonial contexts of the Global South. In doing so, it will advocate for a reimagination of heritage practices to integrate local expertise to ensure the survival of Créole houses as vital components of the cultural landscape of Mauritius.Jeewa, K.;Minguzzi, M. The Spirit Of Water
This book describes a research project begun by the author in 2015 and co-authored by the chiefs of the KhoiSan peoples living in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, South Africa, aided by staff and students at Nelson Mandela University. The scope of the project was to investigate methods and procedures that could help re-establish the link between the Indigenous communities and their ‘forgotten’ heritage sites due to the colonial segregations. Making use of a participatory and interdisciplinary method we explored the tangible and intangible heritage of the Eastern Cape province, with particular attention to the remains of precolonial fish traps located along the shoreline. Included also are important testimonies from the KhoiSan chiefs who, alongside the author, led the project

Comics by Magda Dulčić
Salonu jugoslavenskog stripa u Vinkovcima. Iduća etapa u karijeri je kolaboracija sa suprugom Zvonkom Todorovskim, unutar multimedijalne grupe Divlje oko, gdje plasiraju stripove namijenjene galerijskom gledanju, a u izrazu Magda Dulčić pokazuje rezolutnu nadogradnju stila. Istovremeno, ostvaruje ciklus stripova za djecu u kojima pokazuje koherentan i jasan izričaj, suptilnih intervencija i eksperimenata. U posljednjim samostalnim stripovima, autorica ostvaruje djela lirskih, intimnih i intuitivnih preokupacija. This thesis focuses on the analysis of comics, creative phases and versatile artistic expression of Magda Dulčić (1965-2016), and her outstanding significance within the development of Croatian national comics. The multi-facetness of artistic interest is the main characteristic of Magda Dulčić as an artist, which makes her opus an intriguing subject for analysis. Following the inventions introduced by the group Novi kvadrat, and under the auspices of their member, Krešimir Zimonić, Magda Dulčić has been, since the early 1980's, creating many comics for fanzines, youth press, daily newspapers, comic magazines and children's magazines. Her comics can be found on the pages of Lucifer, Kurir, Patak, Vidici, Polet, Večernji list, Flit, Comicon, Modra lasta, Arkzin, Prvi izbor and Oblutak. The comics created by Magda Dulčić have an easily recognized style and characteristic formal elements. With her authentic poetics of expression, she stands out as one of the first relevant female authors on the comic art scene. Her colleagues, critics of popular culture and art historians also recognized this, so in 1988 she was awarded for comic innovation at the 4th Salon of Yugoslav Comics in Vinkovci. The next stage in her career was a collaboration with her husband, Zvonko Todorovski, within the multimedia group Divlje oko, where they created comics intended for gallery viewing. Regarding her expression, Magda Dulčić shows a more resolute change of style, thematically, visually and technically more complex. At the same time, she creates a cycle of comics for children in which she shows coherent and clear expressions, subtle interventions and experiments. In her latest independent comics, from 2010 until 2016, the author created works in which she displayed lyrical, intimate and intuitive preoccupations
