Japanese Environmental Ethics -Focusing on Takeshi Umehara's Environmental Thought-
application/pdfMost Japanese scholars have contributed to reports about the environmental ethics that originated in the western countries. Instead of their contribution,a Japanese thinker,Takeshi Umehara has introduced a Japanese environmental ethics by having analyzed Japanese cultural traditions from the Jyomon period up to now. In this article, the author introduced the American environmental ethics briefly and explained about the Japanese environmental ethics that Umehara introduced, then clarified the difference between them.departmental bulletin pape

Clinical observation of renal cell carcinoma
Ten cases of renal cell carcinoma were clinically studied. Symptoms: Initial symptom was hematuria in seven patients, and gastro-intestinal disorder or general malaise in two patients. No patient had complete set of triad-hematuria, mass and pain. Pyrexia seen in three cases disappeared after nephrectomy. Diagnosis: Renoscintigram was more useful than pyelogram when a tumor was relatively small and located near the capsule. Nephrotomography was helpful for differential diagnosis from cyst. Treatments: As a rule, transperitoneal approach was taken. In two cases of big renal tumor weighing more than 1000 grams, nephrectomy was successfully performed under general hypothermic anesthesia. All the cases received postoperative radiation therapy, and two received preoperative irradiation with clinical effect. As to chemotherapy, continuous infusion of 5-fluorouracil into the renal artery was tried for 13 days in one patient. Prognostic factors: Out of factors affecting prognosis, intravenous invasion or thrombosis of the tumor was considered most significant
Clinical effect of cephalexin for urinary tract infection
1) Cephalexin (Cepol) was administered to 28 urinary tract infections for 4 to 7 days at daily dose of 1, 000 mg. The result was excellent in 14, fair in 11, and noneffective in 3; thus making the effectiveness rate of 89% (25/28). 2) The clinical results were found correlated well with sensitivity test of the isolated microorganisms. Cephalexin was effective against E. coli, Staph. epidermidis, N. gonorrhoeae, Klebsiella and even against Proteus mirabilis. There was no effect on Pseudomonas aeruginosa. 3) Antimicrobial activity of cephalexin was proved superior to that of cephaloridine by disc sensitivity test. 4) From the above results, cephalexin must be a useful drug for the treatment of urinary tract infection
Diderot et le confucianisme : autour du terme Ju-kiao de l'article *Chinois (Philosophie des)
Takeshi Koseki: Diderot and Confucisnism (the article PHILOSOPHIE DES CHINOIS).
An analysis of several Encyclopédie articles, in particular CHINOIS (PHILOSOPHIE DES) enables the author to question the generally held opinion that Diderot was hostile to the Chinese. In this article we find an apparent contradiction between Diderot's praise for Confucius's moral philosophy and his criticism of Mediæval Chinese sects, in particular Ju-kiau, which is in fact Confucianism. However, as we see in d'Holbach's article JUKIAO, this was considered, following du Halde, the founder of 18th-century Chinese studies, to be a later sect which presented a corrupt form of Confucisnism. Diderot's criticism is thus not directed towards Confucianism, which he respects for its practical moral philosophy, but to the obscure metaphysical doctrines of Ju-kiao.Koseki Takeshi. Distinctive features of the skull of the Ryukyu Scops Owl from Minami-daito Island, revealed by computed tomography scanning
Morphological differentiation of island-dwelling organisms provides model systems for studying evolution. Computed tomography (CT) scanning is an entirely non-destructive technique that provides detailed three-dimensional (3D) images of physical structures. Geometric morphometrics has been increasingly used in avian morphology studies by analyzing 3D data obtained from CT scans. We used geometric morphometrics to evaluate the morphological details of the skulls of three, genetically distinct, island populations of the Ryukyu Scops Owl Otus elegans: O. e. elegans from the northern part of the Ryukyu Archipelago, O. e. elegans from the southern part of the Ryukyu Archipelago, and O. e. interpositus from Minami-daito Island. Skulls were scanned using an X-ray CT system and the digitized 3D coordinates of 16 landmarks for each skull were analyzed in order to describe geometric morphometric features. O. e. interpositus was found to have a significantly smaller skull than either population of O. e. elegans. From principle component analysis of shape variation, we also found that the skull shape of O. e. interpositus differed significantly from both the northern and southern groups of O. e. elegans. This difference was in terms of PC1, which mainly represented relative anteroposterior length, and angle of the orbit. We inferred that the small skull of O. e. interpositus is partly a consequence of the particular founders of the population, or evolutionary selection that has taken place on Minami-daito Island and that the distinctive shape of the skull of O. e. interpositus is partly a consequence of adaptations for foraging efficiency, or of morphological integration
