To answer this question we estimate a version of the Burdett-Mortensen search equilibrium model and analyze how workers’ search behaviour responded to these reforms. We try both nonparametric and fully-parametric estimation methods and identify the cases in which the nonparametric approach cannot be applied. We find that the entitlement reforms are largely responsible for the increase of unemployment among unskilled workers

We use long-term panel data from Germany and apply di fferent regression models, based on household covariates and previous-year equivalence income, to classify a household as vulnerable or not. Predictive performance is assessed using the Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROC), which takes account of false positive as well as true positive rates. Estimates based on cross-sectional data are much less accurate than those based on panel data, but for Germany, the accuracy of vulnerability predictions is limited even when panel data are used. In part this low accuracy is due to low poverty incidence and high mobility in and out of poverty

Self and embodiment: a bio-phenomenological approach to dementia
Get PDFLoss of self is widely regarded to be a consequence of dementia, and this perceived loss presents a variety of problems - not least because a clear understanding of the concept of self is elusive. This paper suggests a way to cut through problems that arise because we rely on conceptions of self in our understanding of the effects of dementia. It is proposed that we can avoid reliance on the concept of self through an approach based in in bio-phenomenology. Such an approach would help us better understand the inner life of those with dementia and assist us to recognize that even in late stage dementia they are semiotic subjects with unique valu

No full textThis chapter charts the beginnings of the official journal of the Federation of Australasian Philosophy in Schools Associations (FAPSA), from the early news letters of the Philosophy for Children (P4C) movement in Australia, through to the launch of Critical & Creative Thinking (C&CT) in 1993 and the difficulties of keeping the journal alive until its demise in 2009. It then records the resurrection of FAPSA's journal as a peer-reviewed, online open-access journal under a new name in 2014. It is also a story of the people whose commitment during nearly three decades contributed to one of the most important parts of the Australian story of philosophy with children. The journal in its various forms was committed to the theoretical and pedagogical exploration of teaching philosophy to school-aged children, but like many journals it struggled in a publishing climate that included a proliferation of journals, difficulty in funding publication costs, and the changing nature of academic publishing, including the rise of online publishing and changes to the rules by which the quality of academics' output are judged
