True Colours or Rainbow-Washing Exposed!? – Company Pride in and through Digital and Social Media Reviewed

    No full text
Following a noble cause can function as a basis for valuable marketing. Apart from the fact that selling products also belongs to this scheme, companies must individualise and re-create these products constantly. In this process, many companies seek great motivation in using the rainbow flag or the rainbow colours, especially around June—traditionally celebrated as Pride month—to promote and sell their products to customers who (like to) identify with these goods. However, lately, companies are also questioned about their genuine inclination toward causes connected to these colours as customers desire to know how far the product reflects the general support of the LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer and beyond) community. This paper analyses therefore a selected number of random samples in a preliminary study using hashtags by companies as well as individuals on Instagram and written statements from companies’ social media accounts and websites as a basis. Through their approach, the author aims to show how rainbow-washing is detected, communicated and criticised as customers become more aware of the difference between potential marketing traps and genuine support. As the results of this preliminary study have so far indicated, customers develop more awareness and also communicate positive as well as negative changes in cooperative behaviour. Through this article’s limited approach and frame, merely impulses can be given to research the topic within a broader corpus linguistic frame.

An investigation of career patterns of transition-age youths and older workers

Persons with disabilities separate from employment positions for a variety of different reasons. The conditions and reasons for these separations have been the subject of a number of investigations in an effort to understand and improve job tenure. Early studies tended to frame this research in terms of deficits and situations created by the employee that led to his or her being terminated. Later studies took a more balanced view of separations by including reasons beyond the employee's control (for example, transportation problems or moving) and positive reasons, such as promotions or finding a better job. None of these studies, however, framed their research with regard to theoretical contributions made from work done in career development, occupational choice, or work adjustment. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the career development of persons with disabilities that are revealed by patterns of job separations. These patterns were compared to what is known about career development for persons without disabilities in terms of Super's life-span, life-space model (Super, 1984, 1990). An earlier investigation indicated that age was a significant predictor of job separation (Luft & Rusch, 1994). Neither individual demographic characteristics (disability, ethnicity, and gender) nor job placement variables (job type, job placement, and previous work or training placement) were significant predictors in this analysis. The present investigation sought to examine this model when calculating age as a continuous variable and by including additional individual, employer, and agency variables. These variables were from an extant database of information collected over a five-year period on supported employees within a midwestern state."Results showed that age was a significant predictor of job separations in the last and most parsimonious regression model consisting of eight variables. Other significant predictors included categories of primary disability, year of entry into the supported employment program (1985-1990), number of hours worked per month, vocational aptitude, and the average job separation of supported employees within an agency. In general, results were not definitive and did not confirm that individuals with disabilities follow patterns of career development patterns that are similar to individuals without disabilities. However, trends for job separations across age groups, although not statistically significant, continue to suggest that some similarities in career patterns do exist and that separations become increasingly positive (i.e., ""promotions"") as workers get older (cf. Luft & Rusch, 1994)."A number of historical conditions potentially impacted the strength of the results of this investigation: the newness of supported employment programs which resulted in the very recent entry of most of the sample into the community workforce regardless of their age, and the instability of the size of several disability groups which reflected changes in definitions of disabilities as well as changes in subsequent school and adult services. These conditions reemphasized the relative recency of many of the current services for persons with disabilities and consequently, modified this study into an exploratory investigation into career development patterns. A more definitive investigation and description of career development patterns may need to wait until the majority of persons with disabilities are consistent and regular working members of the community.Made available in DSpace on 2011-05-07T12:30:35Z (GMT).

Most Libraries nowadays offer their catalogues or databases online, but do not adapt their reference services to the new environment. The purpose of this masters' thesis is to analyse what has changed in the field of reference work and to describe how new products and services can help librarians in responding to this development. Firstly, changes in reference work due to the increased use of the Internet and electronic media are examined. The main points discussed are increased end-user searching, accompanied by changes in the way students do their research, electronic publishing, digitisation and the impact all these factors have on reference work. This is followed by an analysis of new products and services (virtual reference, personalised and convenience services, user education in information literacy, hybrid library concept). Finally, some strategies for improving the web presence of reference on the website of the Austrian National Library are developed. The main findings were that libraries need to be proactive and aware of the fact that there is a segmented user group with different needs. The main focus should be to provide users with a seamless access to all the information resources of a library

Changing Northern Ireland – Reflections in Language Usage and Change: Interdisciplinary Approach on the Correlation of Language Variables with Ethnicity, Gender and Sexual Identity in Northern Ireland

    No full text
With respect to its troubled past Northern Ireland has constantly been a field of interest, academic research and discourse. Certain periods in this past, like for example the “Troubles” (a time of violent struggle that began in 1969/70), sooner or later tend to create a particular approach towards language usage. As research has already been carried out on the “Troubles” and its language usage the question now remains in how far the application of lexical items would be changing through the impact of the so called peace process. Examining the language use surrounding this process a wide range of phenomena in the field of politics and social affairs but also in society could be analysed and discussed, assuming that change for some reason developed here. Investigating such circumstances further this empirical interdisciplinary study in the shape of a corpus analysis addresses the presumed language change in Northern Ireland by employing news texts (Belfast Telegraph, BBC Northern Ireland and An Phoblacht) of the period from 1995 to 2009 (i.e. before and after the Good Friday Agreement a negotiated settlement between Catholics and Protestants in 1998) for the analysis to attempt to establish a link between changing semantic and lexical units, and to some extend to even find a relation to alleged gradual social change. The evaluation is based on a qualitative and quantitative analysis of thematically pre-selected keywords in the areas of politics, social affairs, and society. Generally it could therefore be concluded that change – though marginal in numbers – appears perceivable. Despite a detailed examination and evaluation (qualitative and quantitative) it needs to be pointed out, however, that the findings of correlating social and linguistic variables could in the end only imply a kind of relation – contrary to the expectations in the beginning. Perhaps, in some cases, gradual change could be illustrated like for example with the name change of the police (RUC to PSNI) or changed social terminology. Nevertheless this study created an important contribution of research on post-“Troubles” Northern Ireland as it brings this statelet back into focus on the one hand and in addition prompts questions on the challenges of future language usage in societies that experienced violent conflict on the other.
