No full textAuf Einladung des Zentralrats der Juden in Deutschland und der Hochschule für Jüdische Studien Heidelberg hat Bundeskanzlerin Dr. Angela Merkel am 11. Juli 2007 im Rahmen der Heidelberger Hochschulreden in der Aula der Alten Universität einen Vortrag zum Thema Toleranz - die Basis des Miteinanders der Religionen und Kulturen gehalten. In Ihrer Rede rief die Kanzlerin zu mehr religiöser und gesellschaftlicher Toleranz in Europa auf. Nur so könne die Integration von Ausländern gelingen, hieß es weiter. Merkel ermunterte die Religionen dazu, die Welt mit den Augen des jeweils anderen zu entdecken. "Das ist fast das Spannendste", betonte sie. Dieser Prozess führe zu Dialog und demokratischer Willensbildung. Der Rektor der Heidelberger Hochschule erinnerte in seiner Begrüßung an Angela Merkels ersten Besuch in der Hochschule für Jüdische Studien im Jahre 1991 in ihrer damaligen Funktion als Bundesministerin für Frauen und Jugend. Sie war anlässlich der Eröffnung einer Konferenz zu dem Thema „Geschichte der jüdischen Frau in Deutschland“ gekommen. Bereits damals hat sie in ihrer Eröffnungsrede ausgesprochen, was heute wissenschaftlicher Standard ist: Die Geschichte des Judentums in Deutschland und ihre Beschreibung ist zugleich auch Teil der deutschen Geschichte. Bodenheimer hob hervor, dass die Hochschule für Jüdische Studien, die erstmals in ihrer knapp dreißigjährigen Geschichte von einem Regierungsoberhaupt besucht wurde, „heute unterwegs ist, sich als europäisches Kompetenzzentrum für Jüdische Studien zu etablieren“. Dabei sei es Ziel der jüdischen und nichtjüdischen Dozierenden und Studierenden „in einer christlich geprägten Umgebung gemeinsam jüdische Studien zu betreiben, um in die pluralistische Gesellschaft auszustrahlen“. Der Rektor der Ruprecht-Karls-Universität, Prof. Dr. Dres. h.c. Peter Hommelhoff, nutzte die Gelegenheit, um Fr. Dr. Merkel für Ihre beeindruckende G8- und insbesondere EU-Präsidentschaft zu danken. Auch dafür gab es aus dem voll besetzten Auditorium in der altehrwürdigen holzvertäfelten Aula viel Applaus
