Undergraduate researchers report only moderate knowledge of scholarly communication: they must be offered more support

    No full text
Undergraduate students are increasingly participating in the scholarly communication process, mostly through formal research experiences. However, Catherine Fraser Riehle and Merinda Kaye Hensley, having surveyed and interviewed university students, reveal that undergraduate researchers have only moderate levels of confidence in their knowledge of scholarly communications, especially publication and access models, author and publisher rights, determining the impact of research, and research data management. Moreover, students revealed that to receive specific guidance in these areas was rare. There is much opportunity for faculty members, graduate students, librarians, and research programme coordinators to collaborate and develop learning interventions in these areas

The critical and continuing role of LIS curriculum in the teacher training of future librarians

There is very little in the way of formal training on how to learn to teach within library and information science (LIS) curriculum. In fact, most new librarians learn how to teach on the job and proactive librarians will seek out professional development opportunities to supplement their experiences. Formal instruction-related courses in LIS schools are not new, but the need for prepared instruction librarians continues and training remains inconsistent. This case study is informed by two theories supporting the notion of praxis, where learning is best achieved by putting theory and pedagogy into action. Kolb’s Experiential Learning theory (ELT) (1984) and Reflective Practice (RP), as discussed by Moon (2004) and Brookfield (1995), provide an appropriate educational lens through which to examine the phenomena of preparing librarians to teach in the field. The authors present an evolving and collaborative model where a practicing librarian and a LIS faculty member, both with instruction experience, team-teach an advanced course that builds upon an existing introductory instruction course covering basic pedagogical strategies. This advanced course provides a structure for students to receive hands-on experience within active library instruction classrooms.is peer reviewedSubmitted by Merinda Hensley ([email protected]) on 2013-06-15T22:26:17Z No. of bitstreams: 1 CoLIS_CookeHensley.pdf: 175510 bytes, checksum: bf7ef940f9c6ee135bef9d656e50656f (MD5)Approved for entry into archive by Sarah Shreeves([email protected]) on 2013-06-17T14:33:20Z (GMT) No. of bitstreams: 1 CoLIS_CookeHensley.pdf: 175510 bytes, checksum: bf7ef940f9c6ee135bef9d656e50656f (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2013-06-17T14:33:21Z (GMT). Problematizing the Role of Information Literacy in Disinformation, Dialogue, and the Healing of Democracy

The proliferation of technology in the past decade has rapidly changed information behavior. In response, information literacy instruction has expanded to include critical practices to help students examine how biases shape the finding and evaluating of information. However, librarians are now being called to address the ways in which information technology itself is laden with biases and the impact this technology can have on both the search experience and the material world. In particular, the threat of mis/dis/malinformation (Wardle, 2019) and biased search algorithms to democratic principles has become a concern for librarians, students, and the everyday searcher. The conversation around the impact of artificial intelligence, personal data harvesting, and search algorithms has been gaining attention – most recently in response to the mis/dis/malinformation campaign against the U.S. presidential election and the January 6th insurrection – and has created both the potential and the imperative to incorporate these topics into information literacy instruction. We propose integrating dialogic exercises into library instructional practice as one means of accomplishing this goal.Open Restriction set for Item 117852 on 2021-06-25T00:23:30Z with date null by [email protected] by Merinda Hensley ([email protected]) on 2021-06-25T00:38:57Z No. of bitstreams: 1 ProblematizingIL_2021.pdf: 135294 bytes, checksum: 6f3ed158c6ac125cb03c46470657875b (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2021-06-25T00:38:57Z (GMT).
