Towards a New Canadianness: Re(-)Membering Canada in Lawrence Hill’s Any Known Blood (1997) and David Chariandy’s Soucouyant (2007)
Get PDFpeer reviewedThis article examines the representation of Canadian multiculturalism in Lawrence Hill’s Any Known Blood (1997) and David Chariandy’s Soucouyant (2007). I argue that these novels can be regarded as revisions of Canada’s official policy towards minorities, because they both creatively rewrite silenced parts of national history, and attempt to remap the connections between Canada and the world beyond the national frontiers. Hill’s and Chariandy’s revision of the past and redrawing of the present are made particularly clear in their novels through the representation of Canadian space, more specifically in their distancing from the image of urban centres as areas of cosmopolitanism. This idea of setting the narrative in conventionally Canadian (rural) topographies is also a way of locating their Black characters in a geographical environment traditionally seen as White, which thus allows the writers to question the very elements constitutive of Canadian identity and, by extension, of the Canadian nation
A genealogy of the recognition of blackness in Caryl Phillips’s Cambridge and Foreigners: Three English Lives
Get PDFThis chapter contends that Caryl Phillips’s Cambridge (1991) and Foreigners: Three English Lives (2007) exemplify a genealogy of the recognition of blackness. Through Cambridge, in the eponymous novel, and Francis Barber and Randolph Turpin, two of Foreigners’ three black protagonists, Phillips signals a carryover from the sixteenth to the twentieth century of negative perceptions (and self-perceptions) of blackness. Additionally, Foreigners portrays, through its third black protagonist, David Oluwale, that even in the twentieth century, fighting against racism might lead to torture and death, indicating that despite the passage of time, and strides having been made by black people, there is a pervasive desire to erase or vilify them, which invariably impacts their identities and their overall being-in-the-world, as Heidegger refers to it

Ihre Forderung nach Gleichberechtigung und Abwehr jeglicher Herrschaft werden vor dem Hintergrund heutiger feministischer Forderungen diskutiert. Im Anschluß an die Betrachtung der zeitgenössischen Rezeption Mathilde Vaertings wird die Frage aufgeworfen, inwieweit ihr Leben und ihre Karriere die Stellung der Frau in der Wissenschaft während der zwanziger Jahre (und auch später?) spiegeln. Her major work - Neubegründung der Psychologie von Mannund Weib (1921 fol.) - is analyzed from a methodological point of view and with respect to its implications for educational research. Vaerting\u27s demands for equal rights for women and her rejection of any kind of domination are discussed within the framework of present feminist positions. After having studied how contemporaries reacted to Mathilde Vaerting\u27s writings, the author raises the question of whether Vaerting\u27s life and career reflect the Status of women in science during the 1920s (and later on?).
