Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Observation of local tectonic movements by a quartz-tube extensometer in the Sopronbánfalva Geodynamic Observatory, in Hungary–Validation of extensometric data by tidal analysis and simultaneous radon concentration measurements

In 1990 a quartz tube extensometer was installed in the Sopronbánfalva Geodynamic Observatory (SGO) of the Geodetic and Geophysical Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. On the basis of the 20 year data series, an average strain rate of -5.36 μstr/y was determined. Because the instrumental drift can also cause a slow change in the output signal of the sensor similar to the tectonic movements, a lot of efforts were made to determine the drift of the extensometer. The instrument has no detectable drift according to the instrumental calibrations (regular calibration, parallel recording by more displacement sensors, etc.). Since autumn of 2008, the radon concentration has been continuously monitored by an AlfaGuard instrument in the SGO. The investigation of the relationship between strain and radon concentration also showed the absence of instrumental drift, so the instrument measures real tectonic movements. The results of the extensometric measurements show that the rate of tectonic movement is not constant. During the period 1993-2001, the strain rate accelerated to a maximum of -8.6 μstr/y in 2001, and then decelerated again between 2002-2010 to approx. -2.5 μstr/y in 2010

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    No full text
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Mentes perigosas

Pragmatic Case Studies as a Source of Unity in Applied Psychology

    No full text
To unify or not to unify applied psychology: that is the question. In this article we review pendulum swings in the historical efforts to answer this question—from a comprehensive, positivist, “top-down,” deductive yes between the 1930s and the early 60s, to a postmodern no since then. A rationale and proposal for a limited, “bottom-up,” inductive yes in applied psychology is then presented, employing a case-based paradigm that integrates both positivist and postmodern themes and components. This paradigm is labeled “pragmatic psychology” and, its specific use of case studies, the “Pragmatic Case Study Method” (“PCS Method”). We call for the creation of peer-reviewed journal-databases of pragmatic case studies as a foundational source of unifying applied knowledge in our discipline. As one example, the potential of the PCS Method for unifying different angles of theoretical regard is illustrated in an area of applied psychology, psychotherapy, via the case of Mrs. B. The article then turns to the broader historical and epistemological arguments for the unifying nature of the PCS Method in both applied and basic psychology.Peer reviewe

Urgent and elective proctologic/anorectal interventions in the covid-19 pandemic: A practical guideline for treatment safety

    No full text
BACKGROUND: This article aims to give practical information and concrete suggestions on what should be considered in emergen-cy, semi-urgent and elective settings for common anorectal diseases in the hectic period of the COVID-19 pandemic, based on early results of a series of anorectal interventions. METHODS: Referring to other related guidelines, general considerations specific to the diagnosis and treatment of highly prevalent anorectal diseases were developed to target the correct patients, evaluate and orientate by telemedicine, adapt the Proctology Unit to the new pandemic, and control contamination and infection. Specific considerations for common anorectal diseases were cited, and our initial results were retrospectively documented. RESULTS: From March 1 to April 10, 2020, we contacted 240 patients with anorectal diseases in two centers. We evaluated the results retrospectively on 16–17 April. At the end of this survey, 14 patients (5.8%) were lost for further contact and follow-up. Thir-ty-one patients (12.9%) were evaluated as nondeferrable cases and invited to the Proctology Unit. Twenty-eight patients required interventions at the same session. Adhering to the principles described here, more than 90 percent of benign anorectal disorders could be treated successfully, with 2.1 percent of suspected contamination and no confirmed cases. None of the Proctology personnel or their close contacts developed COVID-19, either. CONCLUSION: By adhering to the principles outlined in this practical guide, it was possible to treat most of the benign anorectal diseases safely in the initial, hectic period of the COVID-19 pandemic

A Szatmári Konzervgyár Kft-ben folyó GMO-mentes csemegekukorica gyártás

A kukorica jelentős beltartalmi értékei miatt válhatott Magyarország legnagyobb felületen termesztett zöldségnövényévé. Ennek következtében a konzervipar nagyon kedvelt nyersanyaga lett. A gyártási folyamat lépéseinek részletes ismerete és a folyamatok megtervezése nélkülözhetetlen a gyártás pontos megvalósítása érdekében. A GMO-kat övező folyamatos bizonytalanságoknak köszönhetően kapott nagy szerepet a GMO-mentes gyártás. A NON-GMO élelmiszerbiztonsági rendszer bevezetéséhez és alkalmazásához számos rendeletben rögzített feltételeknek való sikeres megfelelés szükséges. Ennek következtében tanulmányoztam a Szatmári Konzervgyár Kft. üzemében folyó csemegekukorica gyártás folyamatát, kiemelt figyelmet fordítva a GMO-mentes termelésre.gjBiomérnökBSc/B

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    No full text
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
