L estimates for degenerate non-local Kolmogorov operators

    Let z=(x,y)Rd×RNdz = (x,y) \in \R^d \times \R^N-d, with 1d<N1 \le d < N. We prove a priori estimates of the following type : \|\Delta_x^\frac \alpha 2 v \|_L^p(\R^N) \le c_p \Big \| L_x v + \sum_i,j=1^Na_ijz_i\partial_z_j v \Big \|_L^p(\R^N), \;\; 1 for vC0(RN)v \in C_0^\infty(\R^N), where LxL_x is a non-local operator comparable with the Rd\R^d -fractional Laplacian Δxα2\Delta_x^\frac \alpha 2 in terms of symbols, α(0,2)\alpha \in (0,2). We require that when LxL_x is replaced by the classical Rd\R^d-Laplacian Δx\Delta_x, i.e., in the limit local case α=2\alpha =2, the operator \Delta_x + \sum_i,j=1^Na_ijz_i\partial_z_j satisfy a weak type H\"ormander condition with invariance by suitable dilations. Such estimates were only known for α=2\alpha =2. This is one of the first results on LpL^p estimates for degenerate non-local operators under H\"ormander type conditions. We complete our result on LpL^p-regularity for L_x + \sum_i,j=1^Na_ijz_i\partial_z_j by proving estimates like \beginequation* \labelnew \|\Delta_y_i^\frac \alpha_i 2 v \|_L^p(\R^N) \le c_p \Big \| L_x v + \sum_i,j=1^Na_ijz_i\partial_z_j v \Big \|_L^p(\R^N), \endequation* involving fractional Laplacians in the degenerate directions yiy_i (here αi(0,1α)\alpha_i \in (0, 1\wedge \alpha) depends on α\alpha and on the numbers of commutators needed to obtain the yiy_i-direction). The last estimates are new even in the local limit case α=2\alpha =2 which is also considered

Spatial structure of genetic variability in natural stands of Fagus sylvatica L. (beech) in Italy

    No full text
We report an autocorrelation study of 11 enzyme loci detected by starch gel electrophoresis in 14 populations over the Italian biogeographical range of beech (Fagus sylvatica L.). In line with previous studies of beech and other forest tree species a low level of spatial autocorrelation was detected. No correlation between the amount of microspatial structuring of genetic variability in different populations and environmental (latitude, longitude, altitude), structural (mean and standard deviation of tree size) and genetic characteristics (mean expected heterozygosity, mean F(IS)) was found. No significant differences in the amount of spatial structuring seem to exist among loci if low heterozygosity loci are excluded from the analysis

Fruit consumption determinants among young adults in Italy

    No full text
Knowing fruit consumption determinants is essential to improve interventions aiming at stimulating fruit intake in young population. This paper analyses young adults attitude and behaviour towards fruit consumption. We performed a survey on Italian university students (n = 723) to explain fruit consumption behaviour and determinants based on the theory of planned behaviour (TPB). The importance of determinants was evaluated with multi-group structural equation modelling (SEM). The TPB variables (attitudes, subjective norms and perceptions of control) explain 53% of intention to consume at least 200 g/d of fruit, and 16% of reported fruit consumption. The explained variance of fruit consumption increases to 18% if we include habits as a mediator between intentions and behaviour. In this case, intention and PBC become relatively less important in explaining fruit consumption. This suggests that stronger habits result in less conscious behaviour, and that interventions to increase fruit consumption should improve fruit availability and develop individuals’ ability to overcome barriers. Multi-group analysis has shown the moderator effect of different socio-demographic characteristics such as gender, living status, shopping habits, body mass index (BMI) and area of study in influencing intentions and behaviour. These results point to possible tailored strategies of public and private interventions to improve fruit consumption among young adults
