In this edition of Audio News, presented by Peter Goodwin, Sandy Cairncross, Maggie Black (Earthscan), and Girish Menon (Water Aid) talk about:
The Last Taboo: Opening The Door On The Global Sanitation Crisis
a book by Maggie Black and Ben Fawcett, published by Earthscan with UNICEF.
A massive improvement in health and wealth in developing countries could be achieved by providing systems to dispose of human excreta safely. A new book: "The Last Taboo" was launched at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine by the Professor of Environmental Health, Sandy Cairncross
M. G. K. Menon (1928–2016)
Mambillikalathil Govind Kumar Menon (MGK or Goku to friends) passed away peacefully on 22 November 2016 at his residence in New Delhi, India. He was 88 years old. Menon made pioneering contributions to particle physics and successfully implemented a grand vision for the scientific and technological growth of India
Comparisons of Two Integral Inequalities with Hermite-Hadamard-Jensen's Integral Inequality
Certain comparisons of Iyengar-Mahajani’s and Kesava Menon’s
integral inequalities with Hermite-Hadamard-Jensen’s integral inequalities are
considered and some mistakes in the paper [On certain inequalities by Iyengar
and Kesava Menon, Octogon Math. Mag. 4 (1996), no. 1, 9–11.] are corrected.
Some applications of these inequalities to elementary functions are carried out
and several inequalities involving mean values are obtained
Management strategies for prevention of forest fire and environmental degradation in tropics with special reference to Western Ghats of Kerala region, India
Management of forest fire is one of the top priority activities of forest departments, both in tropics and temperate regions. Extensive amount and intensive efforts are deployed to combat fire. The results of a case study on forest fire prone mapping conducted at Periyar tiger reserve in Western Ghats of Kerala, India, was highlighted, and based on the study, the implementation of fire management strategies were discussed. The fire risk map was validated with the forest fire inventory points of Forest Survey of India. Forest fire is a frequent occurrence in tropical forests, especially in moist deciduous and dry deciduous regions. Though forest fire management is one of the major activities of forest departments, the forest fire mitigation is not 100% successful. The magnitude of forest fire, its frequency, potential location, etc., can be assessed using Geoinformatics techniques, by giving different weightage status to fire controlling factors. A case study was conducted on these lines and control measures were highlighted using different management strategies. The implementation of the desired action plan for sustainable development and conservation of forests can be successful only by getting the full support and confidence of the stakeholders. The stakeholder support for environmental management aspects is possible only by convincing them that they are directly or indirectly getting the benefits by the proposed action. Usually, most of the environmental management activities may lead to nontangible benefits, which is apparently non-visible, hence getting stakeholder support may not be an easy task. Various marketing strategies needs to be used to convince the beneficiaries to implement good conservation practices for the betterment of the local inhabitants.</p
Elite images and foreign policy Nehru, Menon and India's policies.
This study examines the foreign policy images of two Indian decision-makers, Jawaharlal Nehru and V.K. Krishna Menon, from 1948 to 1962. It reviews the general foreign policy literature and outlines a research framework for foreign policy analysis. The literature on elite images is also explored and several hypotheses are selected for testing. The quantitative method of content analysis is employed in the research design. The components of the foreign policy images of Nehru and Menon are analysed quantitatively. The salient actors, levels of the international system, domestic variables, symbols, values and issues are examined and patterns of intensity and association are explored. The views of the world of Nehru and Menon are systematically compared and contrasted. Hypotheses from the literature are tested and several new hypotheses are generated from the data. Methodological techniques are evaluated and guidelines for further research are suggested

On The Rise Of Proton-proton Cross-sections At High Energies
The rise of total, elastic and inelastic hadronic cross sections at high energies is investigated by means of an analytical parametrization, with the exponent of the leading logarithm contribution as a free fit parameter. Using derivative dispersion relations with one subtraction, two different fits to proton-proton and antiproton-proton total cross section and ρ parameter data are developed, reproducing well the experimental information in the energy region 5 GeV-7 TeV. The parametrization for the total cross sections is then extended to fit the elastic (integrated) cross section data in the same energy region, with satisfactory results. From these empirical results we extract the energy dependence of several physical quantities: inelastic cross section, ratios elastic/total, inelastic/total cross sections, ratio total-cross-section/ elastic-slope, elastic slope and optical point. All data, fitted and predicted, are quite well described. We find a statistically consistent solution indicating: (1) an increase of the hadronic cross sections with the energy faster than the log-squared bound by Froissart and Martin; (2) asymptotic limits 1/3 and 2/3 for the ratios elastic/total and inelastic/total cross sections, respectively; a result in agreement with unitarity. These indications corroborate recent theoretical arguments by Azimov on the rise of the total cross section. © 2013 IOP Publishing Ltd.406Barone, V., Predazzi, E., (2002) High-Energy Particle Diffraction, , 10.1007/978-3-662-04724-8Donnachie, S., Dosch, G., Landshoff, P.V., Natchmann, O., (2002) Pomeron Physics and QCD, , 10.1017/CBO9780511534935Dremin, I.M., (2012) Elastic Scattering of HadronsKašpar, J., Kundrát, V., Lokajíček, M., Procházka, J., (2011) Nucl. Although the marine living resources are renewable, their
unbridled exploitation causes irreparable loss to the habitat
and the sustainable production of biota. Ever increasing
population and demand for cheap fish protein together with
the availability of a 8041 km long coast and more than 1,80,000
km2 shallow coastal area have attracted not only the
traditional communities but also small-scale entrepreneurs into
fishing. The last fifty years' growth of Indian marine fisheries
is commendable, which has transformed a subsistence-oriented
traditional fmheries into a market oriented commercial
fisheries with the support of technical advancements in harvest
and post harvest areas and also gained considerable strength
and capabilities in landing, storage and processing infrastructure.
The growing demand for prime value species of marine
resources in domestic and export market has encouraged the
