Stopping Voltage-Dependent PCM and RRAM-Based Neuromorphic Characteristics of Germanium Telluride
Recently, phase change chalcogenides, such as monochalcogenides, are reported as switching materials for conduction-bridge-based memristors. However, the switching mechanism focused on the formation and rupture of an Ag filament during the SET and RESET, neglecting the contributions of the phase change phenomenon and the distribution and re-distribution of germanium vacancies defects. The different thicknesses of germanium telluride (GeTe)-based Ag/GeTe/Pt devices are investigated and the effectiveness of phase loops and defect loops future application in neuromorphic computing are explored. GeTe-based devices with thicknesses of 70, 100, and 200 nm, are fabricated and their electrical characteristics are investigated. Highly reproducible phase change and defect-based characteristics for a 100 nm-thick GeTe device are obtained. However, 70 and 200 nm-thick devices are unfavorable for the reliable memory characteristics. Upon further analysis of the Ag/GeTe/Pt device with 100 nm of GeTe, it is discovered that a state-of-the-art dependency of phase loops and defect loops exists on the starting and stopping voltage sweeps applied on the top Ag electrode. These findings allow for a deeper understanding of the switching mechanism of monochalcogenide-based conduction-bridge memristors.Computer Engineerin

Phase-change like process through bond switching in distorted and resonantly bonded crystal
© 2019, The Author(s).Although some methods to improve phase-change memory efficiency have been proposed, an effective experimental approach to induce a phase-change like process without external heat energy has not yet been reported. Herein we have shown that GeTe is a prototype phase-change material, which can exhibit a non-thermal phase-change-like process under uniaxial stress. Due to its structural characteristics like directional structural instability and resonance bonding under 1% uniaxial stress, we observed that bond switching in the GeTe film between short and long bonds is possible. Due to this phase change, GeTe displays the same phase-change as crystal layer rotation. Crystal layer rotation has not been observed in the conventional phase change process using intermediate states, but it is related to the structural characteristics required for maintaining local coordination. Moreover, since the resonance bonding characteristics are effectively turned off upon applying uniaxial stress, the high-frequency dielectric constant can be significantly decreased. Our results also show that the most significant process in the non-thermal phase transition of phase-change materials is the modulation of the lattice relaxation process after the initial perturbation, rather than the method inducing the perturbation itself. Finally, these consequences suggest that a new type of phase-change memory is possible through changes in the optical properties under stress11sciescopu

Poor treatment outcomes of acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and their associated factors among admitted patients in East Gojjam, 2023
BackgroundAcute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) poses a significant public health challenge globally, resulting in considerable health and economic burden. To date, there has been insufficient research in Ethiopia regarding poor treatment outcomes associated with these acute exacerbations.ObjectiveThis study aims to assess the poor treatment outcomes of acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and identify the associated factors among admitted patients in East Gojjam in 2023.DesignAn institutional-based cross-sectional study design was employed.MethodsThe institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted from 7 April 2023 to 7 May 2023, involving 384 participants selected through simple random sampling. Data were extracted from patient charts and registers. Data entry was performed using EpiData, and the analysis was conducted using IBM SPSS Statistics version 26 software. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to identify the association between dependent and independent variables. Variables with a p-value of <0.25 in the bivariable logistic regression analysis were considered candidates for multivariable logistic regression. Variables with a p-value of <0.05 were considered statistically significant.ResultsOut of a total of 346 patients, 99 (28.6%) (95% CI, 23.9–33.3) developed poor treatment outcomes following exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases. Poor treatment outcomes were significantly associated with the following variables: age 65 or older (AOR = 3.9; 95% CI: 1.57–9.71), presence of comorbidities (AOR = 2.6; 95% CI: 1.287–5.20), a hospital stay longer than 7 days (AOR = 3.9; 95% CI: 1.97–7.70), and low oxygen saturation (<88%) (AOR = 9.0; 95% CI: 4.43–18.34).ConclusionApproximately one-third of the patients treated for acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease at the Debre Markos Comprehensive Specialized Hospital experienced poor treatment outcomes. There is a significant association between poor treatment outcomes of acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and age ≥ 65 years, having comorbidities, prolonged hospital stay, and low oxygen saturation
THEORY OF THE PHASE TRANSITION IN IV-VI COMPOUNDS
The thermodynamic theory of second order phase transitions in crystals with the modifications and simplifications recently made by the author and co-workers is applied to the rocksalt structure. We predict several lower symmetry phases achievable via second-order displacive transitions which do not change the unit cell, in addition to the trigonal structure seen in GeTe. A microscopic model is proposed for such transitions, involving space-group configurational (Jahn-Teller) instability of a proposed valence-bond model of electronic structure of binding of these compounds. Some experimentally verifiabIe tests of these proposals are given
Topological Semimetals in the SnTe Material Class: Nodal Lines and Weyl Points
We theoretically show that IV-VI semiconducting compounds with lowerature rhombohedral crystal structure represent a new potential platform for topological semimetals. By means of minimal k·p models, we find that the two-step structural symmetry reduction of the higherature rocksalt crystal structure, comprising a rhombohedral distortion along the [111] direction followed by a relative shift of the cation and anion sublattices, gives rise to topologically protected Weyl semimetal and nodal line semimetal phases. We derive general expressions for the nodal features and apply our results to SnTe, showing explicitly how Weyl points and nodal lines emerge in this system. Experimentally, the topological semimetals could potentially be realized in the lowerature ferroelectric phase of SnTe, GeTe, and related alloys.QN/Akhmerov Grou
