Stress is a dynamic state in which a person is faced with a demand, opportunity, or restriction pertaining to what they want and for which the outcome is seen as both significant and unknown. Each person's perception and response to stressful situations may differ. To quantify the extent to which a person is under the influence of stress has been a source of attraction for researchers for ages. However, there are no developed indigenous measures to assess occupational stress among teachers working in the special education sector. Therefore, the current study aims to develop a scale to identify the domains of stress among special education educators. The current study lays it foundation on quantitative research design. The Special Education Teachers Stress Scale (SETSS) is developed in three stages. In Stage I, the phenomenology of stress was collated from different sources to generate the item pool. Empirical validation from the relevant field experts on the list of items was derived in Stage II. Stage III focuses on establishing the scale's reliability, and Stage IV talks about the sensitivity, specificity, cutoff scores of SETSS. Cross sectional study design was used to identify the stressors, its domains, phenomenology and associated factors among special education teachers both in government and private sectors. Findings revealed that two factors were similar to the existing tools for measuring teachers' stress, i.e., Workload and disciplinary/behavioral issues of the children. Interviews revealed that role ambiguity, excessive paperwork, dealing with a higher number of students with varying issues, and institutional politics were significant sources of stress for the teachers. However, lack of support from parents and individual attention were the factors identified as unique to the Pakistani sample

Human rights, globalisation and the Asian economic crisis / Shad Saleem Faruqi

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. Human rights abuses in any part of the globe deserve world-wide condemnation because state sovereignty is a shield against external aggression. It cannot be used as a sword against one’s own nationals. Haifa century after the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, one can say with guarded optimism that freedom is on the march; that the human rights quest has gained a universal appeal. But despite global recognition of the legitimacy of the human rights discourse, there remain disagreement and discord on a number of thorny issues. The essay examines whether the “Asian values” argument is a smokescreen for the perpetuation of authoritarianism or whether it is a genuine attempt to resist the sweep of hegemonic “Western ” values. The author warns that the human rights quest is a journey, not a destination and one must remain vigilant against new threats like economic globalisation which has added a new form of oppression to older discriminations

The Micromedex Drug-Reax® system was used to screen patient profiles for pDDIs, and IBM SPSS version 20 was used to carry out statistical analysis. Results: We evaluated 209 medical charts and found pDDIs in nearly 78.5% CKD patients. Overall, 541 pDDIs were observed, of which, nearly 60.8% patients had moderate, 41.1% had minor, 27.8% had major, and 13.4% had contraindicated interactions. Among those interactions, 49.4% had good evidence, 44.0% had fair, 6.3% had excellent evidence, and 35.5% interactions had delayed onset of action. The potential adverse outcomes of pDDIs included postural hypotension, QT prolongation, ceftriaxone–calcium precipitation, cardiac arrhythmias, and reduction in therapeutic effectiveness. The occurrence of pDDIs was found strongly associated with the age of <60 years, number of prescribed medicines ≥5, hypertension, and the lengthy hospitalization of patients. Conclusion: The occurrence of pDDIs was high in CKD patients. It was observed that CKD patients with an older age, higher number of prescribed medicines, lengthy hospitalization, and hypertension were at a higher risk of pDDIs. Kokab Jabeen,1 Sidrah Saleem,1 Shah Jahan,1 Summiya Nizamudin,2 Faiqa Arshad,1 Zill-e Huma,1 Syed Mohsin Raza,3 Maria Mehmood,1 Muhammad Roman,1 Faiz Ul Haq1 1Department of Microbiology, University of Health Sciences, Lahore, Pakistan; 2Department of Microbiology, Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Centre, Lahore, Pakistan; 3Department of Allied Health Sciences, University of Health Sciences, Lahore, PakistanCorrespondence: Kokab Jabeen, Tel +92 3128878893, Email [email protected]: The emergence of extensively drug-resistant (XDR) typhoid in Pakistan has endangered the treatment options available to manage this infection. Third generation cephalosporin were the empiric choice to treat typhoid fever in Pakistan, but acquisition of ESBLs have knocked them out of the arsenal. The current empiric choice is azithromycin which is vulnerable to resistance too. This study aimed to assess the burden of XDR typhoid and the frequency of resistance determinants in blood culture samples collected from different hospitals in Lahore, Pakistan. Methods: A total of 835 blood cultures were collected from different tertiary care hospitals in Lahore during January 2019 to December 2021. Among 835 blood cultures, 389 Salmonella Typhi were identified, and 150 were XDR S. Typhi (resistant to all recommended antibiotics). Antibiotics resistance genes of the first-line drugs (blaTEM-1, catA1, sul 1, and dhfR7) and second line drugs (gyrB, gyrA, qnrS, ParC and ParE) were investigated among XDR S. Typhi. There were different CTX-M genes isolated using the specific primers, blaCTX-M-U, blaCTX-M-1, blaCTX-M-15, blaCTX-M-2, blaCTX-M-8 and blaCTX-M-9.Results: Antibiotic resistant genes of the first-line drugs were isolated with different frequency, blaTEM-1 (72.6%), catA1 (86.6%), sul 1 (70%), and dhfR7 (56%). Antibiotics resistance genes of second-line drugs were isolated as: gyrB (60%), gyrA (49.3%), qnrS (32.6%), parC (44%) and parE (28%). Among CTX-M genes, blaCTX-M-U (63.3%) was the most frequent followed by blaCTX-M-15 (39.3%) and blaCTX-M-1 (26%).Conclusion: Our study concluded that XDR isolates circulating in Pakistan have acquired first-line and second-line antibiotic resistant genes quite successfully along with CTX-M genes (ESBLs) rendering them resistant to the third generation cephalosporins as well. Emergence of azithromycin resistance in XDR S. Typhi which is currently used as an empiric treatment option is worrisome and needs to be monitored carefully in endemic countries like Pakistan. Keywords: Salmonella, antimicrobial resistance, plasmids, XDR typhoi

Adoption of blockchain technology : exploring the factors affecting organizational decision

Blockchain (BCT) is an emerging technology that promises many benefits for organizations, for instance, disintermediation, data security, data transparency, a single version of the truth, and trust among trading partners. Despite its multiple benefits, the adoption rate of BCT among organizations has not reached a significantly high level worldwide, thus requiring further research in this space. The present study addresses this issue in the Australian context. There is a knowledge gap in what specific factors, among the plethora of factors reported in the extant literature, affect the organizational adoption of BCT in Australia. To fill this gap, the study uses the qualitative interpretative research approach along with the technology-organization-environment (TOE) framework as a theoretical lens. The data was mainly drawn from the literature review and semi-structured interviews of the decision-makers and senior IT people from the BCT adopter and potential adopter organizations in Australia. According to the findings, perceived information transparency, perceived risks, organization innovativeness, organization learning capability, standards uncertainty, and competition intensity influence organizational adoption of BCT in Australia. These factors are exclusively identified in this study. The study also validates the influence of perceived benefits and perceived compatibility on BCT adoption that are reported in the past studies. Practically, these findings are helpful for the Australian government and public and private organizations to develop better policies and make informed decisions for the organizational adoption of BCT. The findings would guide decision-makers to think about the adoption of BCT strategically. The study also has theoretical implications explained in the discussion section. © 2022 Saleem Malik et al
