Ignas Šeinius as self-editor
Reikšminiai žodžiai: Ignas Šeinius; Proza; Poezija; Rankraščiai; Tekstologija; Ignas Šeinius; Prose; Poetry; Manuscripts; TextologyBased on the assumption that the fact of publishing his piece of writing for Ignas Šeinius was not more important than the authenticity of the published text because, as the entries in his diary, remarks in his letters to editors and his address on linguistic issues in the article The Art of Lithuania testify, he was concerned with publishing an author’s or authorised variant of a literary work and placing confidence in the creator, his idea and talent. The author of the present paper uses comparative and descriptive methods to determine the actual relation of Ignas Šeinius to, as he puts it, once written work, what and how systematically he revised, changed and corrected... To this end, the paper deals with the self-editing of the short-stories of his early period Vidunaktį (At Midnight), Ruduo (Autumn) and the feuilleton Lietuvis iš Paryžiaus (A Lithuanian from Paris) published in Viltis, Lietuvos žinios and the short-prose collection Nakties žiburiai (1914) compiled by Šeinius himself, the pamphlet Kaip Jackus tapo mokslo vyras (How Jackus Became a Man of Letters) published in Lietuvos žinios and preserved in its original manuscript, also the poems Melas ir vargas (Lie and Misery), Patrijotams (To the Patriots) and the short-story Rimošiaus atostogos (Rimošius’ Holidays), which have survived only in manuscripts. The study leads to the conclusion that when preparing his pieces of writing for publishing, the author was quite faithful to two principles – linguistic diversity, including dialecticisms, and orthographical simplicity. The poem Melas ir vargas was the only one subject to most essential editing by giving it a ring composition and a more regular rhythm highlighting the theme. Nevertheless, even scarce, the facts of self-editing of Ignas Šeinius are not only of interest to the researchers of his creative heritage, but can also be of use to the historians
Book review: Waging war: a new philosophical introduction by Ian Clark
The 2nd edition of Waging War: A New Philosophical Introduction offers a farreaching engagement with both the practice of, and theorisations on, waging war today. Ignas Kalpokas finds that its author, Ian Clark, effectively questions many ostensibly selfevident assumptions regarding warfare, thereby avoiding the reiteration of familiar and simplistic conceptual categorisations and binaries
Book review: the Middle Ages
In Johannes Fried’s The Middle Ages, the author makes his case for an alternative interpretation of the medieval period as much more sophisticated than commonly thought, writes Ignas Kalpokas. The book intricately traces how ideas and systems of thought that we now consider quintessentially modern European ways of life, thinking and culture stemmed from this time period

Being and appearing in "siegfried immerselbe atsijaunina" by ignas šeinius.
Being and Appearing in "Siegfried Immerselbe atsijaunina" by Ignas Šeinius The aim of this paper is to analyse satirical novel Siegfried Immerselbe atsijaunina by the Lithuanian author Ignas Šeinius (1889-1959). The research is based on several theoretical approaches, mainly Yuri Lotman's cultural semiotics assumptions and the ideas expressed in Roland Barthes’ essay Writing Degree Zero. This dissertation focuses on the modalities of being and appearing discussed in Algirdas Julien Greimas’ theory. Paper describes the dialectical structure of the meaning in Šeinius’ text and through it showcases the mechanisms of revealing laughter. The reconstruction of the interwar Lithuanian sociopolitical discourse attempts to show how the historical and universal value systems function in the text, what significance their relationship has to the structure of the meaning
Secrets of the Swedish archives: in search of Ignas Šeinius' traces
Reikšminiai žodžiai: Švedijos valstybinis archyvas; Baltijos archyvas Stokholme; "Baltų pabėgėlių byla"; Igno Šeiniaus korespondencija; Materials of the Ewedish archives; The diplomat writer Ignas Seinius; "Case of the Balts refugees"; Corespondence with the Lithuanian writersThe article looks in brief into the heritage of the Swedish national archive (Riksarkivet) connected to life, political activities, and creative endeavors of an independent Lithuanian diplomat and Lithuanian writer Ignas Jurkūnas in Sweden. The author uses the Baltic archive in Stockholm (Baltiska arkivet) and a personal archive of the writer’s son Irvis Scheynius to discuss several aspects of Ignas Šeinius personality: his political and social activities in the role of a diplomat, psychological formation of creator’s personality, relations with Lithuanian cultural environment and particular writers. The author’s attention captures not only unique historical facts (so-called “case of Baltic refugees“), but also epistolic, previously unpublished, materials of other Lithuanian writers (Balys Sruoga, Jurgis Savickis and others)
Algorithmic governance: politics and law in the post-human era
This book analyses the changes to the regulation of everyday life that have taken place as a result of datafication, the ever-growing analytical, predictive, and structuring role of algorithms, and the prominence of the platform economy. This new form of regulation – algorithmic governance – ranges from nudging individuals towards predefined outcomes to outright structuration of behaviour through digital architecture. The author reveals the strength and pervasiveness of algorithmic politics through a comparison with the main traditional form of regulation: law. These changes are subsequently demonstrated to reflect a broader shift away from anthropocentric accounts of the world. In doing so, the book adopts a posthumanist framework which focuses on deep embeddedness and interactions between humans, the natural environment, technology, and code. Ignas Kalpokas is Senior Lecturer of Public Communication at Vytautas Magnus University and Assistant Professor of International Relations and Development at LCC International University, Lithuania. He is the author of Creativity and Limitation in Political Communities (2017) and A Political Theory of Post-Truth (2019)
Dalyvaujamojo muziejaus paradigma virtualioje Lietuvos muziejų komunikacijoje
The participatory museum paradigm in virtual communication of Lithuanian museums
Ignas Kapleris
Summary
The article presents a research of Lithuanian museums’ websites and profiles in the social Facebook media content and visits’ characteristics, done by the author in the end of 2013. The aim of the research was to assess the preparation of museums and their visitors for implementing the participatory museum paradigm. The information of social interaction encouraging tools in museum websites and virtual visits’ characteristics gathered in the analysis has shown that most of Lithuanian museums understand virtual communication in the logic inherent to industrial rather than network society. The growing number of museums’ profiles and theis visitors’ interaction in Facebook digital media show that both actors of the museums’ field slowly move towards the realization of the participatory museums’ paradigm in the virtual space.

Expedition of monument protection courses and "An Olden Day" in Ignas Končius’ photographs
Reikšminiai žodžiai: Ekspedicija; Etnologija; Fotografijos; Ignas Končius; 20 amžius; Nuotraukos; Paminklų apsaugos kursai; Paveldas; Šventė "Senovės diena"; An "Olden Day" festival; Ethnology; Expedition; Heritage; Ignas Končius; Lithuanian XX c. history; Monument Protection Courses; Photographs; PhotosThe photograph collection kept in the Art Museum of Lithuania of the prominent Lithuanian ethnographer Ignas Končius contains photographs that fix the clothing and customs of the people from Merkinė and Dainava areas as well as the architecture of the old Lithuanian village. They are of great interest and value to present-day investigators. On the basis of documentary material, the author of the article thoroughly tells the story of the expedition of monument protection courses and the festivals Olden Day on 9th-10th July 1935 and discusses the events fixed in Končius’ photographs (104). The courses were organized by the State Archaeological Commission striving to train more qualified specialists who could properly register decaying monuments of the past. Theoretical knowledge acquired at the courses was strengthened by the expedition to the village of Dubakloniai and at the festival An Olden Day. Owing to the monument protection courses quite a big group of qualified people was trained in the space of a year to collect and fix our heritage. The trainees acquired basic knowledge in the field of ethnography, archaeology, art and architecture. The artists and students of art schools not only familiarized themselves with the heritage of their ancestors but possibly also drew some creative inspiration. The trained land surveyors and cultural technicians, who often had to spend some time in Lithuanian villages and townships, were able to help to preserve the heritage of the past much better. An Olden Day was the first festival of this kind in Lithuania. The organized exhibition featured some objects, clothing and tools used in the past, old customs and dances also deserved their proper attention. The importance of the festival is also witnessed by the fact that it was honored by the visit of the then President Of Lithuania Antanas Smetona. Končius’ photographs that fixed the exhibition An Olden Day in Merkinė, though often lack exact metric, are greatly interesting and useful for familiarizing oneself with the material culture of the past or investigating it. The fixed impressive old edicts collected in one place make possible to imagine the picture of one or another household utensil from this area, its development and beauty. The examples of architecture fixed during the expedition can serve as a perfect material in the studies of wooden building and its decoration in Dzūkija (southeast Lithuania)
"Golden Dog" - the unknown novel by Ignas Jurkunas Scheynius
Reikšminiai žodžiai: Nežinomas rankraštis; Biografinis-sociokultūrinis; Literatūrinis-interpretacinis tyrinėjimas; Unknown manuscript; Biographical-sociocultural and literal-interpretational investigation; Nežinomas rankraštis; Literatūrinis- interpretacinis tyrinėjimas; Komparatyvistika; Unknown manuscript; ComparativisticsThe article deals with the novel by Ignas Jurkunas Scheynius written in Swedish (but not finished) Golden Dog. Until now the novel has not been mentioned anywhere in the history of literature since the manuscript of the novel weathered for decades in the State Archive in Stockholm. It was found in 1998 and deciphered in 2008; this manuscript of Scheynius becomes interesting by the very literary fact, is important in the context of the author‘s creative work, and is gripping in tems of comparativistics. In the article those three ways of literature reconnaissance tackles the issues of concern, considerations, and the raised assumptions. The first one, the biographical-sociocultural aspects introduces the very manuscript of Ignas Scheynius. The genesis of the novel is raised basing it with the context material of the Stockholm Archive (Scheynius‘ diaries, letters and etc.). The second one, the literary-interpretational way discloses the conversational typology of the piece encouraging to realize the place of the novel, its importance in the Swedish epics of Scheynius. The third, comparativistics, view on the novel looks for touches, watersheds with Scheynius artistic expressions already formed in Sweden. Most probably we can expect impressionistic tones coming from the Lithuanian creation of the literature. So the comparativism forms several levels in the analysis of the novel: the relationship with the Scheynius Swedish creations, with the Lithuanian artistic world of the author, the relationship or watershed with the Swedish epic tradition. The article ends up with the conclusions which assess the very fact of the novel, its artistic value and defines its place in the creation of Scheynius
