In the whole of Brazilian writer Ana Miranda#s fictional narrative, the travel thematic # considered one of the most fertile themes of the western literature of all times # occupies a central space, and can even been seen as the most important structuring axis of Miranda#s works. The aim of the present thesis is to analyze the treatment given to the travel subject in the novels Desmundo, O retrato do rei, Dias & Dias and Amrik, emphasizing that, through the traveling narrators, Oribela, Mariana, Feliciana and Amina, the author promotes a connection between different cultures, genders, ethnics and generations, at the same time that establishes a profitable dialogue with the past in her invariant problematization concerning the limits and crossings between the fictional and the extra-literary narrative discourses that surrounds it, mainly the historical and the biographic ones

Based on the premise that intellectuals relate dialectically with reality on their productions, and on that the work of an intellectual transpire political, cultural and ideological aspects of the historical time in which both the intellectual and its work are, we propose to consider the narratives by Argentinian comic-stripe writer Quino on his work Mafalda, in a way that his production may be taken as historical source, serving as groundwork to the construction of a historical narrative about the epoch in which his work was produced and, yet, about the author himself as historical subject. Comic-stripes have great social impact because they take advantage on linguistic and imagetic strategies associated to mass culture and industry of culture, influencing ideologically its reception and the ways society abstracts reality. Taking on account Latin-american context on the time in which Mafalda by Quino was produced, we find a pleiad of intellectuals that elaborate schemes to comprehend the surrounding reality, exuding their dialectical relations with the world on their works. In this sense, in so far the review of the literature produced on these matters – the linguistic and cultural theories about comic-stripes, as studies about the role of the intellectual on Latin America, yonder the analysis of Mafalda comic-stripes, with the purpose of unveiling its ideological, political and cultural tenor that reflects the artist own positions – are the most pertinent means to conduct such research. Thus, we hope to contribute on the enrichment of the constructions of historical narratives about the considered period, pointing out cultural, political and ideological aspects, in so far as about the narrated reality through Quino’s work as well as about the artist himself.

The exponential growth of technology has allowed the emergence of new approaches in the teaching setting, and as it begins to take it’s space in the students' learning process, new challenges of adaptation arise, both for students and teachers. Being medicine an area of constant change, it requires a tremendous capacity of adaptation by those who practice it. Similarly, medical education is also evolving in an attempt to respond to the new challenges and demands that this type of training requires. Traditional methods seem to be losing ground in medical education, and students are beginning to gain more and more responsibility for their learning and results. The analysis of several studies, which resulted in 88 carefully selected bibliographical references served as a foundation for the integrated review of literature, in order to meet the objectives outlined in this dissertation: (1) clarify what type of impact multimedia tools bring to motivation and performance of medical students, and whether their introduction will bring different results when compared to traditional teaching methods; (2) clarify what might be the most effective tools, reflecting on the relevance of including this type of methodology in the teaching curriculum of medical schools. The adoption of e-learning strategies, and all that is associated with it, or blended learning, offers students greater control and freedom with regard to the way they want to study, and this type of strategies are better viewed and accepted when offered as a complement to traditional methods. With the combination of multimedia tools, the impact felt in parameters such as the development of theoretical and practical skills, satisfaction in the learning process and maximization of classroom time, is positive. In addition, individual study time also benefits and is done more efficiently. It is also the case with the motivation and retention rates and with the results of the knowledge evaluation processes, where the impact of this combination seems to bring even more advantages. This paper is intended to contribute to the understanding of which strategy can potentially be the best to adopt, and which multimedia tools are best suited to the current state of medical education, while not failing to expose the benefits or harm that may arise from these choices

Variants in FH-phenocopy genes (LDLRAP1, APOE, LIPA, ABCG5, and ABCG8), polygenic hypercholesterolemia, and hyperlipoprotein (a) [Lp(a)] can also mimic a clinical FH phenotype. We aim to present a new diagnostic tool to unravel the genetic background of clinical FH phenotype. Biochemical and genetic study was performed in 1,005 individuals with clinical diagnosis of FH, referred to the Portuguese FH Study. A next-generation sequencing panel, covering eight genes and eight SNPs to determine LDL-C polygenic risk score and LPA genetic score, was validated, and used in this study. FH was genetically confirmed in 417 index cases: 408 heterozygotes and 9 homozygotes. Cascade screening increased the identification to 1,000 FH individuals, including 11 homozygotes. FH-negative individuals (phenotype positive and genotype negative) have Lp(a) >50 mg/dl (30%), high polygenic risk score (16%), other monogenic lipid metabolism disorders (1%), and heterozygous pathogenic variants in FH-phenocopy genes (2%). Heterozygous variants of uncertain significance were identified in primary genes (12%) and phenocopy genes (7%). Overall, 42% of our cohort was genetically confirmed with FH. In the remaining individuals, other causes for high LDL-C were identified in 68%. Hyper-Lp(a) or polygenic hypercholesterolemia may be the cause of the clinical FH phenotype in almost half of FH-negative individuals. A small part has pathogenic variants in ABCG5/ABCG8 in heterozygosity that can cause hypercholesterolemia and should be further investigated. This extended next-generation sequencing panel identifies individuals with FH and FH-phenocopies, allowing to personalize each person's treatment according to the affected pathway. Was supported by the Portuguese Cardiology Society (grant number: D13123) and FCT (grant numbers: PTDC/SAU-GMG/101874/2008 and PTDC/SAUSER/29180/2017). Durability of fibre reinforced cementitious composites: Coupling mechanical and chloride environment loads

    No full text
Fibre reinforced cementitious composites (FRCC) may be characterized by their improved performance namely in terms of tensile ductility, accompanied by multiple cracking, and potentially lower permeability to liquid and gas in cracked state. Cracking, which is nearly inevitable, can occur due to applied structural loading, shrinkage, chemical attack, thermal deformations and restrained condition. Even though might not be a structural problem, cracking could be a durability issue, since it considerably modifies the transport properties of the cementitious composite and, as consequence, accelerates the deterioration process, which can significantly impair the long term service life of a structure or element. Literature indicates that, particularly for chloride penetration, the presence of cracks and/or load condition, causes a more deleterious attack compared to standard durability test on sound specimens composites. Contributing to that concern a methodology for accessing chloride attack in loaded and/or cracked FRCC is proposed. Cracking procedure and specimen geometry were selected, considering that cracks produced in laboratory should resemble those in structural elements (beams). Thus, FRCC specimens were firstly pre-loaded under four point bending up to a pre-defined crack width. The crack width was kept using special stainless steel frame. In addition, cracked but not loaded specimens were considered and sound specimens were used as reference. Then, specimens were exposed to wet-dry cycles in a chloride solution. It is argued that the chloride penetration is definitively influenced by the load and cracking conditions, which promoted a higher penetration depth leading to a severe fibres corrosion, which also compromised the mechanical performance of FRCC.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Materials and Environmen

    Get PDF
This dissertation addresses Clarice Lispector’s literary work and the conflict between body and thought to which it gives form by considering the questions raised by the experiences of pain, emotion and crisis. The first part (chapters I. and II.) reflect upon the experience of the body understood as a crossroad between the sameness of everyday life and the verticality of the emotions that put that sameness into question. If, at first, the main characters present themselves as banal, regular, plain bodies, with the emergence of pain, emotion, crisis, they become intersecting and moving bodies, metamorphic existences that unfold within a pulsating, violent, organic life. The second part (chapters III. and IV.) concentrate on the relation between body and language in Lispector’s work and establish a parallel between the split body and thought and the split between the experience of the body and the (non) explanation of language. The subchapters of the second and fourth chapters are dedicated to each of Clarice Lispector’s works and try to to verify specificities intrinsic to the dissertation topic. Besides the more specific clarician literature, the main theoretical references of this study are philosophic texts and concepts of Ilit Ferber, Georges Didi-Huberman, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Martin Heidegger

To analyse the question we will try to understand who is the human person that founds, with his dignity, the juridical order, and why it is not possible not to recognize legal personality to any person, so that, in a second step, and being conscious that the legal system also allows the extension of legal personality to juridical persons, we can understand if a functionalist perspective can explain the attribution of legal personality to robots. This analysis cannot ignore the dominant value and cultural options, as well as an axiological presupposition that makes the legal system a true Order of Law.This dissertation deals with the problem of recognizing legal personality to artificial intelligence entities from an ethical and legal point of view.It is beyond doubt that the human being, as a person, has legal personality; however, the question arises about the possibility of extending legal personality to new autonomous and self-learning robots. Susceptibility to Expansive Reactions of a Greener UHPC: Micro to Macro-Scale Study

    Get PDF
Nowadays, in Europe, several infrastructures, such as bridges, viaducts, and maritime structures, are in an advanced state of degradation. Therefore, novel repair/rehabilitation techniques are sought. Recent advances in ultra-high-performance fibre-reinforced cement-based composites (UHPFRC) represent a significant step towards resilient structures. In addition to their remarkable mechanical properties (compressive strength > 150 MPa), they present extremely low permeability and, as a premise, very high durability. Despite their relatively high cost, UHPFRC can be a competitive solution for rehabilitation/strengthening applications where smaller volumes are needed. UHPFRC applied in thin layers (with or without reinforcement) can replace carbonated and/or cracked concrete acting as a protective watertight and/or strengthening layer. The structural capacity increases (stiffness, ultimate strength), and the durability is expected to improve significantly while keeping cross-sectional dimensions. Additional advantages are expected, such as reduced intervention time, fewer maintenance routines, reduced life-cycle cost, and longer service life. Although much of the focus on UHPFRC has centred on mechanical and/or structural performance, durability is inevitably linked with mechanical properties. The current work evaluated the durability of non-property and greener UHPC concerning expansive reactions, alkali-silica reactions and expansion due to external sulphates, by macro and micro-scale integrative study. Linear expansion tests were performed in UHPC specimens according to ASTM C 1260 and LNEC E−364. At the macro level, no deleterious expansion due to ASR or external sulphate occured. Expansion due to ASR was 0.0018% after 14 days of immersion in an alkali-rich environment, and no expansion was recorded regarding sulphate attack. However, SEM analysis reveals reactive products of ASR and sulphate attack, namely, ASR gel and ettringite, respectively, in UHPC specimens
