In his March 2015 interview with Harv Thompson et al, Mark Lefebvre reflects on his long involvement with the arts in Wisconsin, and specifically Robert Gard's contribution to his development and Wisconsin rural arts. He discussed his youth in northeastern Wisconsin and the influence UW-Extension and his undergraduate career at UW-Madison had in his development as an author and publisher. He related his work with Gard and shared reminiscences about a number of major figures in UW's arts heritage. Finally, he discussed his more recent work with medical education. This interview was conducted for inclusion into the UW-Madison Oral History Program and the Gard Foundation's UW-Madison and WI Community Arts History Project

The Quebec composer Rodolphe Mathieu (1890-1962) is but little known. A pioneer of musical modernity in Quebec, he joined the modern group in 1915 and composed most of his works before 1933. A member of Montreal's intellectual and artistic community, he wrote several texts in which appear some of the first reflections on the creative process. While a regionalist tendency advocated a return to folklore as a source of inspiration for typically Canadian music, he chose to promote a creative course which aimed at originality and individuality. Convinced that intellectual development necessarily came from discussion and the confrontation of ideas, between 1930 and 1935 he organised the "Soirées Mathieu", multidisciplinary moments that featured the composer's extended social network. Among the guests was André Laurendeau, one of his students. The study of the relationship between Laurendeau and music shows that he envisaged a musical career before he committed himself to political journalism

    Henri Lefebvre, Space and Folklore

The complex spatial thinking of Henri Lefebvre and its implications for folkloristics are explored in the context of a fictitious conversation between him and the author as they walk around a small farm in southeastern British Columbia. Aspects of Lefebvre’s position are explored and illustrated using examples from this setting, such as fences and campfire pits. Lefebvre’s tripartite schema for conceptualizing space is articulated during this conversation, foregrounding the importance of the oft-occluded espace vécu (lived space). Viewing this as a dialogic, embodied, open-ended domain of space is shown to be a highly generative and potentially transformative approach to understanding space — an approach which has numerous implications for the study of cultural tradition

This paper aims to address, in a broad manner, another interpretative framework for the standardized concept of urban in the work of Henri Lefebvre. It is, mainly, an effort to finding methodological elements used by the author that explain the intention behind this concept. My interest, then, is to conduct a research on the definition of urban by Lefebvre, in order to contribute to the understanding of this important philosopher’s thought. The concept of urban has been the main topic of debates and controversies regarding Lefebvre’s perspective, as it is evoked by the author in a broad sense – rather than in interpretative closure. The argument developed is that the conceptual arsenal of the author is similar to Adorno’s Dialectics, thus acknowledging the non-concept status of how Lefebvre makes use of the signifier “urban”. Incentive Effects on Risk Attitude in Small Probability Prospects

Most studies on the role of incentives on risk attitude report data obtained from within-subject experimental investigations. This may however raise an issue of sequentiality of effects as later choices may be influenced by earlier ones. This paper reports instead between-subject results on the effect of monetary stakes on risk attitudes for small probability prospects in a laboratory experiment. Under low stakes, we find the typical risk seeking behavior for small probabilities predicted by the prospect theory. But under high stakes, we provide some evidence that risk seeking behavior is dramatically reduced. This could suggest that utility is not consistently concave over the outcome space, but rather contains a convex section for very small amounts.Risk attitude; Incentives; Decision; Experiment
