Muzykal'nost' kak estetičeskaja norma simvolistskoj poesii
Vyacheslav Ivanov and Paul Valéry insisted that real pole of attraction for the adherents of Symbolism was, paradoxically, not the concept of a symbol, but aspiration to likening of poetry to music. Of course, the high status of music in the Symbolist doctrine can be explained as influence of ideas of Wagner, Nietzsche and Schopengauer. Musicality for Alexander Blok was not only a desired limit of verse technique, i.e. purely literary phenomenon. It becomes the ontological principle, satisfying the ambition of Russian symbolists to be the universal world outlook theory. Nevertheless, Belyj considered music as a very dangerous element of culture for the epistemological aims of mankind

Topological conditions in geometric and Maslov quantization
Among the most important theories in physics is quantum mechanics which, in contrast to classical mechanics, uses topology in addition to differential geometry. Specifically, in this work, we will study the well-known geometric quantization procedure due mainly to B. Kostant and J-M. Souriau, and then compare it to an alternative geometric quantization method using the Maslov index due to J. Czyz. Given a symplectic manifold, that generally models a classical physical system, we wish to quantize the Poisson algebra of observables on it. The idea is to construct a Hilbert Space associated to the symplectic manifold and associate to each smooth function a self-adjoint operator acting on H. This construction is done in such a way that the Dirac quantization conditions hold. The full process consists of three steps.
The modernist project of a total transformation of life through art focuses to a certain extent on the question of an anthropological nature of poets as well as on the general line of the transformation of human nature. The theoretical basis for the discussions on the range of issues among the representatives of the new art was rooted both in ideas of natural science (to which the modernists have always showed increased interest) and in Nietzsche's concept of the overman, which arose under the undoubted influence of Darwinism. Paradoxically, both the Russian Symbolists and the German expressionists discover unexpected unity in upholding of principles of non-biological criteria of human development. Unlike Darwinism, for which the criterion of evolution is augmentations of degree of an adaptability to external conditions and increasing of life expectancy, the aesthetics of modernism castigates dangerous symptoms of a social timeserving as a decline of anthropological nature. Dmitry Merezhkovsky worried about the ubiquitous dissemination of mediocrity in Europe. This anthropological type, according to Alexander Blok, appeared as a result of division of masses from the spirit of music, which is open only to the poet in the era of civilization. Modernists indicate that poets often demonstrate an alienation from their social background, an evolutionary leap. Taking into account the fact that geniuses often bore the symptoms of biological degeneration – illness and antisocial behavior – Gottfried Benn in his theory of "progressive anthropology" claims that main vector of human evolution is not the increasing survival of species, but the ability to create art

The Author of the Alexander Romance
This paper, which is based on a portion of the introduction of the author’s edition of Il Romanzo di Alessandro (Mondadori: Fondazione Valla 2007), surveys the generic components of the Alexander Romance in an attempt to arrive at a definition of the work. The argument builds on Merkelbach’s categorisation of elements and uses Fusillo’s insight into the novel as an ‘encyclopaedic genre’ to propose that ‘historical novel’ is not, as Hägg contended, a misnomer for the work. The main components I discuss are: ‘life’; praxeis; chreiai; Cynic elements, including choliambic poetry and utopian perspectives; and the Egyptian aspects of the narrative. A concluding jeu d’esprit offers a characterisation of the putative author, his antecedents and his process of composition.Richard Stoneman was for 25 years editor for classics at Croom Helm and then Routledge. In 1997 he was appointed an Honorary Fellow in the department of classics, University of Exeter. After retiring from publishing in 2006 he has been pursuing his researches on the Alexander legends and teaching a course on the subject at Exeter. His Penguin translation of the Alexander Romance was published in 1991, and a volume of translated Legends of Alexander the Great appeared from Everyman in 1994. Also in 1994 he co-edited Greek Fiction with John Morgan. His edition of the Greek recensions of the Alexander Romance was published (volume I) by the Fondazione Valla in 2007 – volumes II and III will follow over the next few years – and his Alexander the Great: A Life in Legend appeared from Yale University Press in spring 2008. He is the author of a number of other books on Greek history and travel, and is writing a book on oracles
