Infrastructures and New Technologies as Sources of Spanish Economic Growth
The paper revises the impact of infrastructures and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) on economic growth. It takes Spain as a reference case due to the accessibility to capital services estimates. The Spanish database allows the measurement of the impact on growth of three ICT assets (software, hardware and communication) and six different types of infrastructures (roads, railways, airports, ports, as well as urban and water infrastructures). It also allows the distinction between public and privately owned infrastructures. As a first step, the paper recommends the adjustment of the National Accounts (NA) figures, especially when the endogenous approach to compute the user cost is utilized. The rationale for the adjustment relies on the need to recognize explicitly the services provided by public capital, not fully included in NA.ICT, Infrastructures, growth accounting
Matilde Serao in Sweden. A Voice of "The New Italy"
This chapter examines the contemporary reception of Matilde Serao's works in Swedish newspapers from 1885 to the first years of the twentieth century. This analysis provides a historical background for understanding why Serao's masterpiece Il paese di cuccagna (1891) was translated in Swedish as early as 1892. In fact, Serao was already known to the Swedish public through the activity of C.D. af Wirsén, an important conservative critic who reviewed her original work and contributed to establishing Serao's reputation as a major contemporary author. Furthermore, examination of recently digitalized Swedish newspapers shows that Serao's short stories were published on at least twenty occasions from 1888 to 1897. These anonymous translations can be attributed with a high degree of probability to the pen of Ellen Lundberg-Nyblom, the translator of Il paese di cuccagna. Swedish reviewers greeted Serao as a master of vivid description and an insightful painter of human passions. At the same time, the fact that Serao, being a woman, was professionally active as a journalist and a newspaper editor attracted attention of Swedish media, transforming the Neapolitan author into a public figure known to a broader audience.

Spain and Italy: Catching up and falling behind. Two different tales of productivity slowdown
The paper presents a first set of results for Spain and Italy using the EUKLEMS database. It emphasizes the different paths followed by the two countries over the last thirty five years, even though they still have many features in common. The motivation behind this paper is the poor productivity performance that the two countries have shown recently. The general overview details the factors underlying the process of per capita income convergence. Productivity performance is highlighted as the driving factor of convergence, deserving the greatest attention from different perspectives: the contributions of the different sources of productivity growth, which make use of the growth accounting framework; the impact of the structural change undergone by the two countries while moving from economies with still important shares of the agricultural sector to a more modern one; or the responsibility of poor productivity improvements in given industries. The changing composition of labour also deserves a detailed analysis because of its importance in productivity over the period analyzed.Growth, productivity, Growth accouting
Casa Matilde
novos investimentos no futuro

Advancements in measuring intangibles for European economies
This paper provides an overview of the methods developed so far to measure intangible assets and to evaluate their contribution to economic growth. We review the work carried out under the INTAN-Invest research collaboration and the SPINTAN EU Funded project to generate cross-country estimates of intangible investments coherent with the Corrado, Hulten and Sichel (2005) model. We also provide a summary of recent empirical evidence on the role of intangible capital as a driver of growth across industries and sectors in European countries and the US as an illustration of uses of the intangibles assets data

Flat tax reforms in the U.S.: A boon for the income poor
In this article we quantify the aggregate, distributional and welfare consequences of
two revenue neutral flat-tax reforms using a model economy that replicates the U.S.
distributions of earnings, income and wealth in very much detail. We find that the less
progressive reform brings about a 2.4 percent increase in steady-state output and a
more unequal distribution of after-tax income. In contrast, the more progressive reform brings about a -2.6 percent reduction in steady-state output and a distribution of aftertax income that is more egalitarian. We also find that in the less progressive flat-tax economy aggregate welfare falls by -0.17 percent of consumption, and in the more
progressive flat-tax economy it increases by 0.45 percent of consumption. In both flattax
reforms the income poor pay less income taxes and obtain sizeable welfare gains
