Spells as the examples of faith in the magic of word in the culture of ancient Slavs
Abstract
Nowadays, the ritual sphere is pushed to the margins of the human consciousness. For the general public it is only associated with superstitions, while the linguists link it with its magical function. The faith of the ancient slavs considered “the word” as a material unit. The titled spell is handed down from a generation to generation with the use of texts, which constituted one of the first literary genre of the folk prose. In this article this literary genre was presented as part of the rituals and the role of these texts was noted in the people’s lives. Among the ancient slavs, there was a deep belief in the magical power of a word and circumspection in the use of the language. The author discusses the structure of spells and subdivides them. Furthermore, he draws attention to the heroes of these magic formulas. Closely related to the topic of spells are also the ‘professions’ earning their living from them, which was also pondered in this article.

Fast Genetic Algorithm For Feature Selection — A Qualitative Approximation Approach
No full textWe propose a two-stage surrogate-assisted evolutionary approach to address the computational issues arising from using Genetic Algorithm (GA) for feature selection in a wrapper setting for large datasets. The proposed approach involves constructing a lightweight qualitative meta-model by sub-sampling data instances and then using this meta-model to carry out the feature selection task. We define "Approximation Usefulness" to capture the necessary conditions that allow the meta-model to lead the evolutionary computations to the correct maximum of the fitness function. Based on our procedure we create CHCQX a Qualitative approXimations variant of the GA-based algorithm CHC (Cross generational elitist selection, Heterogeneous recombination and Cataclysmic mutation). We show that CHCQX converges faster to feature subset solutions of significantly higher accuracy, particularly for large datasets with over 100K instances. We also demonstrate the applicability of our approach to Swarm Intelligence (SI), with results of PSOQX, a qualitative approximation adaptation of the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) method. Autorka tekstu korzysta z materiałów badawczych zebranych przez socjolożkę dr Olgę Nowaczyk (Uniwersytet Wrocławski), ze źródeł własnych, a także książek, w których podjęto kwestię udziału Polaków w operacjach wojskowych za granicą. Fragmenty żołnierskich narracji pojawiających się w artykule są wynikiem autobiograficznych wywiadów narracyjnych prowadzonych przez autorkę i dr Nowaczyk, pochodzą także z innych źródeł pisanych. Autorka weryfikuje hipotezy, które postawiła, gdy zaczęta badać narracje tworzone przez żołnierzy. Zadaje także pytania o etyczne aspekty prowadzenia tego rodzaju badań.Abstract: The article presents the preliminary findings of the author concerning the reasons and the effects of the participation of the Polish troops in military operations on the territory of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the Republic of Iraq. The author has
used the research materials collected by a sociologist Olga Nowaczyk, PhD and the author’s own sources, as well as the books which describe the issue of the Polish participation in military missions abroad. The passages of the stories told by the soldiers are the result of the autobiographical narrative interviews conducted by the author and Olga Nowaczyk, they also come from other written sources. The author verifies the hypotheses which she made when she began studying the narratives created by the soldiers. The article also raises the problems of the ethical aspects of conducting this kind of research

Zmienność i współzależność wybranych cech kilku odmian karczocha (Cynara scolymus L.)
No full textKarczoch (Cynara scolymus L.) to gatunek pochodzenia śródziemnomorskiego, dotychczas mało znany w Polsce, głównie ze względu na niewystarczającą odporność na niskie temperatury. Obecnie istnieje wiele nowych odmian karczocha przystosowanych do uprawy w różnych strefach klimatycznych. Stwarza to większe szanse upowszechnienia tego warzywa w Polsce. Celem pracy było określenie wczesności odmian oraz masy pąków i ich zmienności, a także poznanie współzależności pomiędzy wczesnością i cechami pokroju roślin karczocha. Materiał do badań stanowiły dwie odmiany ustalone (A-106 i A-109 Morada) oraz cztery odmiany mieszańcowe (Concerto F1, Harmony F1, Madrigal F1 i Opal F1). Doświadczenie przeprowadzono w warunkach polowych w latach 2005–2007 w miejscowości Lucim (północno-zachodnia część Województwa Kujawsko-Pomorskiego). Badano następujące cechy: termin pojawienia się pąka kwiatostanowego w rozecie, wysokość pędu kwiatostanowego do szczytu pąka głównego, długość liści rozety po zbiorze pąka głównego oraz masa pąków: głównych, pachwinowych, I-, II- i III-rzędu. Zbiór pierwszych pąków kwiatostanowych najwcześniej przeprowadzano u odmiany A-109 Morada (średnio po 64 dniach od wysadzenia roślin na miejsce stałe), a najpóźniej u odmiany Concerto F1 (średnio po 86 dniach). Najwyższą średnią masą pąków wszystkich kategorii na kwiatostanie charakteryzowała się odmiana Concerto F1 (od 224,8 g pąk główny do 40,2 g pąk III-rzędowy), a najniższą A-109 Morada (od 143,4 g do 28,5 g). Pąki główne wszystkich odmian wykazały najmniejszą zmienność — od 13,2% (odmiana A-109 Morada) do 21,7% (odmiana Harmony F1), największą z kolei pąki III-rzędowe — od 17,9% (odmiana Concerto F1) do 42,9% (odmiana Madrigal F1). Istotne wartości korelacji obserwowano pomiędzy liczbą dni od wysadzenia roślin do pojawienia się pąka kwiatostanowego w rozecie i wysokością pędu kwiatostanowego oraz pomiędzy długością liści i wysokością pędu kwiatostanowego, lecz wyniki te nie powtarzały się we wszystkich latach doświadczenia. Wszystkie badane odmiany karczocha wykazały zadawalające wyniki w uprawie polowej. Pąki główne i większość pąków I-rzędowych przekraczały masę 100 g, która decyduje o dobrej jakości surowca przeznaczonego na rynek świeżych warzyw oraz do przetwórstwa.Globe artichoke (Cynara scolymus L.) is a species native to the Mediterranean basin and up to now not widely known in Poland because of insufficient low temperatures resistance. At present many new cultivars adapted to different climate conditions are accessible. It brings a better chance for this species diffusion in Poland. The aim of the study was to estimate the earliness of some cultivars, weight of buds and its variability, and to analyze a correlation between earliness and shape of plants. The analyzed material consisted of two Spanish cultivars selected by Agriset (A-106 and A-109 Morada) ant four hybrid cultivars bred by Nunhems (Concerto F1, Harmony F1, Madrigal F1 and Opal F1). The experiment was conducted in field conditions in the years 2005–2007, in Lucim (north-west part of Poland). The following traits were evaluated: number of days from planting to appearance of bud in rosette, main inflorescence stem height, leaves length after main bud harvest and weight of main, first, second, third and auxiliary buds. The earliest first buds harvest was typical for A-109 Morada (about 64 days after planting) and the latest for Concerto F1 (about after 86 days). The highest weight of whole buds at inflorescence stem was noted for Concerto F1 (from 224.8 g for main bud to 40.2 g for third bud) and the lowest for A-109 Morada (from 143.4 g to 28.5 g, respectively). The lowest variability coefficient showed mass of the main buds from 13.2% (A-109 Morada) to 21.7% (Harmony F1) and the highest variability — mass of third buds — from 17.9% (Concerto F1) to 42,9% (Madrigal F1). Significant correlation was observed between number of days from planting to appearance of bud in rosette and stem inflorescence height as well as between leaves length and stem inflorescence height. Although, these correlations were not constant during the three years of the experiment. All the tested cultivars showed acceptable results in field cultivation. The main buds and most of first buds exceeded 100 g, which is a suitable result for fresh market and for processing
Lipid Formulations and Bioconjugation Strategies for Indomethacin Therapeutic Advances
No full textIndomethacin (IND) is a drug which after successful clinical trials became available for general prescription in 1965 and from that time is one of the most widely used anti-inflammatory drug with the highest potencies in the in vitro and in vivo models. However, despite its high therapeutic efficacy in relieving the symptoms of certain arthritis and in treating gout or collagen diseases, administration of IND causes a number of adverse effects, such as gastrointestinal ulceration, frequent central nervous system disorders and renal toxicity. These obstacles significantly limit the practical applications of IND and make that 10–20% of patients discontinue its use. Therefore, during the last three decades many attempts have been made to design novel formulations of IND aimed to increase its therapeutic benefits minimizing its adverse effects. In this review we summarize pharmacological information about IND and analyze its new lipid formulations and lipid bioconjugates as well as discuss their efficacy and potential application

No full textThe author examines ontological premises adopted in the Controversy over the Existence
of the World by Roman Ingarden. He points out that these premises have been informed
by mereological insights. This reading of Ingarden is substantiated by the postulate that
‘pure qualities’ are components of ‘ideas’ and constitute their proper parts. This is the
reason why they cannot be attributed to individuals as their properties. The role of
properties is consequently filled in by ‘concretizations’, proposed as a new category of
existence. This author claims however that ‘concretizations’ can be easily dispensed with
by reinterpreting ideas in the distributive mode. Assuming this new rendition, one makes
it possible to interpret ‘pure qualities’ as properties of possible individuals, which results
in a comfortable simplification of Ingarden’s ontology
