Alf Nilsen-Børsskog — The Author Chosen by the Language

    No full text
This article discusses Alf Nilsen-Børsskog’s four-volume series of novels Elämän jatko [Continuation of life, 2004–2015], seen as the first literary works treating the Kven culture from a native perspective. Nilsen-Børsskog’s novels are analysed as constituting a “counterstory”, a term coined in the postcolonial cultural research paradigm to refer to self-representation. The Kvens have been considered a national minority in Norway since 1999, and their language has been an official minority language since 2005. The present author scrutinizes how Nilsen-Børsskog’s work differs from previous literary descriptions of this minority, often marked by the frequent use of stereotypes of the Kven language and culture

Smarter objects : programming physical objects with AR technology

Thesis: S.M., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, School of Architecture and Planning, Program in Media Arts and Sciences, 2013.115Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (pages 116-122).This thesis describes a system that associates a virtual object with each physical object. These objects are connected to support a flexible and easy means of modifying the interface and behavior of a physical object. It also supports the creation of simple interactions with other "smarter" objects to create more complex functionality. As a user interacts with a physical object, an augmented reality interface visualizes the virtual object on top of the physical object and gives the user an intuitive graphical interface for modifying the object's interface and behavior or defining how it relates to other objects. As such, the system provides an innovative interface for programming the behavior of physical objects. The contribution of the thesis lies in the meaningful separation of physical and virtual object interactions, a concept of direct mapping and the interprogrammability of Smarter Objects. The thesis presents the employment of Smarter Objects from all aspects and discusses a working implementation as well as several usage scenarios demonstrating potential applications. Finally, the thesis reflects on the implications of this approach for industrial design.by Valentin Markus Josef Heun.S.M

Parallel Model Counting with CUDA: Algorithm Engineering for Efficient Hardware Utilization

    No full text
Propositional model counting (MC) and its extensions as well as applications in the area of probabilistic reasoning have received renewed attention in recent years. As a result, also the need for quickly solving counting-based problems with automated solvers is critical for certain areas. In this paper, we present experiments evaluating various techniques in order to improve the performance of parallel model counting on general purpose graphics processing units (GPGPUs). Thereby, we mainly consider engineering efficient algorithms for model counting on GPGPUs that utilize the treewidth of a propositional formula by means of dynamic programming. The combination of our techniques results in the solver GPUSAT3, which is based on the programming framework Cuda that -compared to other frameworks- shows superior extensibility and driver support. When combining all findings of this work, we show that GPUSAT3 not only solves more instances of the recent Model Counting Competition 2020 (MCC 2020) than existing GPGPU-based systems, but also solves those significantly faster. A portfolio with one of the best solvers of MCC 2020 and GPUSAT3 solves 19% more instances than the former alone in less than half of the runtime
