Non-Main Clause Linking and Verb Form Switch in Syrian Arabic. Is there a circumstantial clause?
No full textRecent research has brought into focus the function of switching between verb forms and types of clauses, here labelled ‘gram switching’, as a device for marking non-main clause linking in various types of Arabic and in Biblical Hebrew (Persson forthcoming a; Isaksson, Kammensjö, and Persson 2009; Isaksson 2011, 2013). The study presented here shows that a switch, either in verb form/morphology or from a verbal to a non-verbal clause, is frequently used as the only marker of non-main clause linking in Damascene Arabic texts from the 1950s. The findings point to the existence of a scale of markedness ranging from no other marking than context and/or intonation to the use of specific subordinating conjunctions. On this scale, gram switching plays an important role as a general, non-specific, marker of a digression from the main-line of a discourse or the main clause of a sentence. The study supports similar findings in previous research on more recent recordings of urban Gulf Arabic as well as on Biblical Hebrew. The results of the study have clear implications on how non-main clauses in Arabic dialects are to be analysed and classified and lead to a deeper understanding of the widespread use of asyndetic clause linking in these dialects. Specifically, the results lead to a questioning of the usefulness of stipulating a special category of circumstantial clauses within Arabic non-main clauses. The different types of clauses that, based on formal or semantic criteria, have been thought to be circumstantial are shown to be part of a larger system of encoding non-main clause linking. Together with the results from research on Biblical Hebrew, the results of this study disclose a need for the re-analysis of non-main clause linking in (West) Semitic in general

Impersonal Style and the Form of Experience in W. G. Sebald's The Rings of Saturn
No full textThis article argues that W. G. Sebald’s prose fiction reverses the traditional positioning of the witness as a point of singularity, and that it instead theorizes a relationship to the act of witnessing that, while anchored in personal experience, is imbued at its core with impersonal form. Using The Rings of Saturn as my central example, I demonstrate that it is the tension between the immediacy of first-person experience and the characteristic distance of Sebald’s style that makes possible the narrator’s attunement to the “traces of destruction” that he encounters during his walk, and to which he bears witness both in and through his narrative. Sebald’s witnessing, then, is less a relation between past and present or witness and event than it is a critical orientation that produces the imperative to bear witness as a function of the very permeability of these categories.Peer reviewe
Ledningsplats Björn och kalla krigets kulturarv
No full textKalla kriget har lämnat många spår i det svenska landskapet. I podcasten Ledningsplats Björn och kalla krigets kulturarv berättar arkeologerna Maria Persson och Tony Axelsson vid Göteborgs universitet om den första arkeologiska undersökningen som gjorts av en lämning från kalla kriget. Runt om i Sverige finns det idag gott om lämningar efter militära anläggningar och installationer från kalla kriget. Ett exempel är ledningsplats Björn söder om Skara där det attackflyg skulle ledas som hade som uppgift att tidigt slå ut en annalkande invasionsflotta. Våren 2015 gjorde arkeologer och en grupp studenter från Göteborgs universitet en samtidsarkeologisk undersökning av ledningsplats Björn. Bland annat undersöktes allt ifrån de stående intakta byggnaderna till betydligt mindre spår som behövde grävas fram ur jorden. Undersökningen beskrivs i en aktuell bok men också i en nyproducerad podcast där lyssnaren får följa med arkeologerna Maria Persson och Tony Axelsson till ledningsplats Björn och det svenska attackflygets krigsstabsplats

Abstract
Undersökningen grundar sig på litteraturstudier, en kvalitativ undersökning och intervjuer av halvstrukturerad karaktär. Målet för undersökningen har varit att undersöka vilka arbetssätt som några pedagoger använder sig av i deras arbete i särskolan och vilken faktor/ vilka faktorer som bidrar till valet/ valen av arbetssätt. Med arbetssätt menas metoder och hjälpmedel som främjar lärandet. Utöver en presentation av olika metoder och hjälpmedel som används på den undersökta grundsärskolan presenteras den intellektuella funktionsnedsättningens inverkan på individen. Utan en förförståelse för individens funktionsnedsättning vilket inverkar på särskolan utformande kan en förståelse för verksamheten vara svår att åstadkomma. Resultatdelen i arbetet är indelad i kategorierna metod, hjälpmedel och miljö. Undersökningen har visat att en helhetssyn på eleven är grunden för att individualisering ska kunna genomföras samt vikten av konkret lärande, strukturering av skoldagen och social träning. Dessa faktorer är betydelsefulla men utan större personaltäthet och mindre antal elever i klasserna hade lärande baserat på individualisering, konkret och socialt lärande varit svårare att genomföra. Färre elever och fler pedagoger i klasserna kan underlätta lärandet så att eleverna kan lära sig i den takt och få den hjälp de behöver.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
No full textThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
