What Ever happened to Francis Glisson? Albrecht Haller and the Fate of Eighteenth-Century Irritability
This article investigates the reasons behind the disappearance of Francis Glisson’s theory of irritability during the eighteenth century. At a time when natural investigations were becoming increasingly polarized between mind and matter in the attempt to save both man’s consciousness and the inert nature of the res extensa, Glisson’s notion of a natural perception embedded in matter did not satisfy the new science’s basic injunction not to superimpose perceptions and appetites on nature. Knowledge of nature could not be based on knowledge within nature, i.e., on the very knowledge that nature has of itself; or – to look at the same question from the point of view of the human mind – man’s consciousness could not be seen as participating in forms of natural selfhood. Albrecht Haller played a key role in this story. Through his experiments, Haller thought he had conclusively demonstrated that the response given by nature when irritated did not betray any natural perceptivity, any inner life, any sentiment interi´eur. In doing so, he provided a less bewildering theory of irritability for the rising communities of experimental physiology

Classification of haller vessel arrangements in acute and chronic central serous chorioretinopathy imaged with en face optical coherence tomography
Purpose: To compare the prevailing patterns of Haller vessel arrangements at the posterior pole between healthy eyes and those with central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) using en face optical coherence tomography. Methods: Eyes of normal subjects and patients with acute or chronic CSC underwent optical coherence tomography imaging (RTVue 100; Optovue Inc, Fremont, CA). En face sections at the level of the Haller layer were classified by two masked graders into five mutually exclusive morphologic categories (temporal herringbone, branched from below, laterally diagonal, double arcuate, and reticular). The relative prevalence of each Haller vessel arrangement pattern was determined for each phenotype. Results: Numbers of eyes examined were as follows: 154 eyes of 77 normal subjects; 41 eyes of 31 patients with acute CSC; and 39 eyes of 33 patients with chronic CSC. The mean age of participants was 44.4 ± 14.6 years for healthy subjects (M:F = 37:40), 48.5 ± 8.2 years (M:F = 24:7) for acute CSC, and 65.3 ± 13.1 years (M:F = 28:5) for chronic CSC. The relative prevalence of each Haller vessel arrangement pattern differed by phenotype. The temporal herringbone pattern was most prevalent in healthy eyes (49.2%), whereas a reticular pattern was most prevalent in eyes with acute and/or chronic CSC (combined, 48.8%). Conclusion: A significant difference was observed in the prevalence of respective Haller vessel arrangement patterns between eyes of normal subjects and those of patients with either acute or chronic CSC. Although further study is needed to determine the mechanistic factors underlying these differences, and the hemodynamic implications, our data suggest that en face optical coherence tomography may find a formal role in choroidal disease classification

An Erythropoietin Gene Polymorphism in the Hypoxia-Responsive Element at Position 3434 Is Possibly Associated with Hypertension
Background/Aims: Several polymorphisms of vasoactive hormones have been implicated in hypertension. Erythropoietin (EPO) interacts with vasoactive substances, such as angiotensin II. Previously detected single nucleotide polymorphisms in the hypoxia-responsive element of EPO might be associated with hypertension and hypertensive end organ damages. Methods: 400 hypertensive patients and 200 age-and gender-matched normotensive controls were genotyped for an EPO polymorphism [cytosine (C)/thymine (T) single nucleotide polymorphism] at position 3434. Patients were grouped according to their genotype into the CC group (CC genotype) and the CT/TT group (CT and TT genotype). BP was measured by ambulatory BP monitoring. Results: The CC genotype was present in 87% of hypertensive patients and in 78.5% of controls (p = 0.007). In addition, patients with the CC genotype had higher BP levels compared with CT/TT genotypes (BPsys 143.7 +/- 20.4 vs. 136.1 +/- 13.5 mm Hg, p = 0.01, and BPdias 85.8 +/- 11.6 vs. 82.4 +/- 8.9, p = 0.043) despite a nearly identical number of antihypertensive drugs (2.3 +/- 1.5 vs. 2.3 +/- 1.6; p = 0.257). 100% of the small number of patients with end-stage renal disease (n = 15) had the CC genotype. Conclusion: The CC genotype of the EPO gene at position 3434 is more frequently found in patients with hypertension and is associated with higher BP levels. Copyright (C) 2011 S.
