Linear stability of buoyant convection in a horizontal layer of an electrically conducting fluid in moderate and high vertical magnetic field
Linear stability of buoyant convective flow in a horizontal layer of an electrically conducting fluid is considered with reference to horizontal Bridgman semiconductor crystal growth. The fluid flows owing to the horizontal temperature gradient in the presence of a vertical magnetic field. The main interest here is in the stability of the flow for a sufficiently strong magnetic field, for the Hartmann number Ha > 10, and increasing to high values, of the order of 103–104. The Prandtl number, Pr, has been fixed at Pr = 0.015. It is shown that besides the Hartmann number the instability strongly depends on the type of the thermal boundary conditions at the horizontal walls. For thermally conducting walls the basic temperature profile exhibits zones of unstable thermal stratification, which leads to instabilities owing to the Rayleigh-Bénard mechanism. However, the transitions between various, most unstable modes as Ha increases are not trivial. For sufficiently high values of Ha, the most unstable mode consists of transverse oscillatory rolls located in the region of unstable stratification. For thermally insulating walls, the transitions are simpler, and for sufficiently high Ha, the most unstable mode consists of longitudinal, steady, three-dimensional mode which is concentrated in the Hartmann layers at the horizontal boundaries. This mode has a combined dynamic-thermal origin and is owed to a strong shear in the Hartmann layers. The electrical boundary conditions do not qualitatively affect the picture of transitions between modes for both thermally conducting and thermally insulating walls.Publisher Statement: This article may be downloaded for personal use only. Age as a criterion of value for tangible cultural heritage objects under Russian law
UNESCO’s activities are dedicated to the conservation of both intangible and tangible cultural
heritage. One of the most difficult issues in constructing a system for the protection of tangible
cultural heritage objects is the criteria for identifying objects as cultural heritage. Obviously, it
takes time to assess the cultural or historical value and significance of a tangible object. In most
cases, granting the status of a cultural heritage object is assigned much later than its creation.
However, international acts also do not contain specific requirements for how old a particular object
should be in order to qualify it as an object of cultural heritage. UNESCO’s practice is known
for several cases of adding to the World Heritage List relatively young sites. The Russian Cultural
Heritage Object Act (2002), along with the laws of some other countries, establishes a specific
age (40 years) that any object must reach in order to become a cultural heritage object. An exception
is made only for memorial apartments and buildings (they can be attributed as objects of
cultural heritage immediately after the death of famous personalities) and for objects of archeology
(they must be at least 100 years old). This rule of law is mandatory, which means that it does
not make other exceptions to the rule of 40 years. Such a rule of law significantly distinguishes
the Russian approach from foreign legislation. On the one hand, such regulation may negatively
affect the possibility of protecting outstanding objects from the late Soviet and early new Russian
period. On the other hand, the approach of granting the status of cultural heritage objects to many
relatively new objects can negatively affect urban development. The author proposes to evaluate
and review this provision of law in order to find the optimal balance of public and private interests
Tradeoffs of the use of SiGe buffer layers in tandem GaAsP/Si solar cells
Thesis: Ph. D., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2016.This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Cataloged from student-submitted PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (pages 101-103).III-V multi-junction solar cells currently have the highest reported theoretical and experimental energy conversion efficiency but their cost, mainly attributed to the use of expensive substrates, limits their widespread use for terrestrial applications. Successful integration of III--V's on a Si substrate to enable a III-V/Si tandem cell can lower the cost of energy by combining the high-efficiency of the III--V materials with the low-cost and abundance of the Si substrate. A maximum theoretical efficiency of 44.8% from a tandem cell on Si can be achieved by using a GaAsP (Eg=1.7 eV) as the top cell. Out of several possible integration routes, the use of a linearly graded SiGe buffer as interfacial layer between the two cells potentially yields the highest quality for the epitaxial GaAsP layer, an essential requirement for realization of high-efficiency solar cells. In this thesis, the impact of the SiGe buffer layer on the optical and electrical characteristics of the bottom Si cell of a GaAsP/Si tandem solar cell was assessed via experimental work. The growth of a SiGe buffer layer was shown to increase the threading dislocation density and as a result the leakage current of the bottom Si cell by about 10x. In addition, the low-bandgap SiGe absorbs more than 80% of the light that is intended for the Si sub-cell, reducing the short-circuit current of the Si cell from 33 mA/cm² to only 6 mA/cm². By using a step-cell design, in which the SiGe was partially etched to allow more light to reach the bottom cell, the current was increased to 20 mA/cm². To quantify the merits of the studied approach as well as evaluate other approaches, we have carried out a theoretical study of absorbed irradiance in a Si single-junction cell, a bonded GaAsP/Si tandem cell, a GaAsP/SiGe/Si tandem cell as well as the step-cell design. The GaAsP/Si bonded tandem cell showed 24% relative improvement in light absorption over a single-junction Si cell. The addition of a SiGe graded buffer was shown to reduce the total absorption by 25%, bringing the efficiency of GaAsP/SiGe/Si tandem cell under that of the Si single-junction cell. The step-cell design, even though successful in increasing light absorption, was not found effective in achieving a higher absorbed power density than that of the Si cell. These results suggest that any future work on integrating GaAsP cells on Si towards a high-performance tandem cell should be focused on using a higher-bandgap material as a graded buffer or using a wafer bonding technique.by Evelina Aleksandrova Polyzoeva.Ph. The function and mission of the “little man” in Bulat Okudzhava’s novel Poor Avrosimov
In the beginning of the article we correlate Okudzhava’s story about the creative history of his novel (“invention” of the scrivener’s image) with the writer’s statements about Decembrism, which allows us to solve the following tasks: 1) to restore the main creative impulses of the writer; 2) to characterize the formation of his cognitive strategy, which covers the mythologized past and the tragic events of the Soviet era; 3) to clarify a number of definite functions of the “little man” that have not yet been noted by the interpreters of the novel; 4) to highlight the mission of the “little man” that reveals Okudzhava’s ethical principle. We consider the artist’s inconsistency in stylizing the thinking of the “little man” (the lead character and his psychological counterpart – the narrator) as a means of involving the contemporary reader in a dispute about the conflicts of the past inherited by the 20th century. We show the fundamental novelty of the embodiment of the Decembrist theme in the mirror of the perception of literary critics of the 1970s, who remained in the grip of the myth of the first Russian revolutionaries in its two varieties (official or alternative, cultivated by freethinkers), which interfered with the proper perception of the status of the “little man” next to a historic figure. Our task is to show that the merciful ethics of the artist, compassionate to the sufferer, soften Okudzhava’s civic intransigence towards the ideology of Pestel, whose state utopia became a Soviet reality; thus, we substantiate the regularity of the election of the “little man”, who himself needs indulgence, to the role of the spokesman for Pushkin’s commandment of “mercy to the fallen”. We trace the bold development in Okudzhava’s novel of the classical tradition of the “little man” experiencing his own drama of the “weak heart”. The echoes of Avrosimov’s fantasies about saving Pestel with Pushkin’s poem “Deep in Siberia’s mines...” are comprehended in the article as a sublimation of the author’s pain about the tragic fate of the Decembrists
