Growth failure prediction in chile
Mardones-Restat F (Family Health Unit, Institute of Nutrition and Food Technology, University of Chile, Santiago, Chile), Jones G, Mardones-Santander F, Dachs N, Habicht J-P, and Diaz M. Growth failure prediction in Chile. International Journal of Epidemiology 1989, 18 (Suppl 2): S44-S49. The purpose of this investigation was to develop screening instruments for the prediction of infants' growth failure. Biological and social variables of subjects attending public clinics in Santiago, Chile, were prospectively collected and screened as possible risk factors of being underweight/age at the end of the first year of life using three methodologies. Methodologies used were: simple relative risk, logistic regression, and classification and regression trees. As judged by sensitivity and specificity properties, the screening instrument developed by the latter methodology is much better than the other two. © International Epidemiological Association 1989
The intervention of the bishops Mardones and Salizanes in Abd al-Rahman I’s central nave in the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba
The discovery of two coats of arms belonging to bishops from Córdoba –friar Diego de Mardones and friar Alonso de Medina y Salizanes- in the axial nave of the foundational Mosque of Abd al-Rahman I, with the occasion of the repair of the roof, has revealed the involvement of both prelates, which consists, by Mardones, in the elevation of a dome in the first section of the nave above the windproof door about 1617, while between 1679 and 1682 approximately Salizanes covered the rest of the nave with baroque hardle vaults. The only intention of both prelates was the exaltation of their personal power and their approval of the mistery of the Immaculate Conception, connecting this nave with the Redemption arch, the access to the transept of the cathedral where Mardones had participated and where his burial was and with the Immaculate’s Chapel, founded by Salizanes to house his tomb
sentido.Fil: Mardones, Laura M. Cecilia. Universidad Nacional del Comahue. Facultad de Ciencias de la Educación; Argentina
Parents living in water, embryos developing in air: respiratory adaptations to use both environments in the freshwater gastropod Pomacea figulina (Gastropoda, Ampullariidae)
The ability to use oxygen from both air and water has been considered key to the colonization of terrestrial environments by invertebrates. The freshwater gastropod Pomacea figulina generally lives submerged, although females lay their eggs mainly above water during nighttime, on the stems of aquatic plants, and the embryos develop inside the air-exposed calcareous egg capsules. However, little is known about the physiological adaptations that the ovipositing females and the developing embryos have developed to breathe in air. In this study, we report sexual differences in the aerial and aquatic oxygen consumption of adults and embryonic respiration in aerially developing egg clusters. We found that the males and females of this species can obtain oxygen from both water and air, although uptake rates for both sexes were much lower in air than in water. Females in air consumed oxygen 42% faster than males, which may be related with the habit of egg laying above water level. Developing embryos inside calcareous eggs obtained oxygen faster when submersed under water than when exposed to air, although embryos near hatching were better able to use oxygen from both air and water than embryos at earlier stages of development. Our data suggest that for P. figulina, laying eggs in the terrestrial environment may be more a strategy for protecting embryos from predators than a respiratory adaptation.</p

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
Systematics, taxonomy, and distribution of species of Myriogenospora G.F. Atk. (Clavicipitaceae, Hypocreales, Ascomycota)
Based on new specimens of Myriogenospora spp. from Costa Rica and Panama, we present morphological analyses, systematic conclusions, additions to host ranges, and geographical distribution data for the two species currently classified in this genus. Myriogenospora atramentosa (Berk. & M.A. Curtis) Diehl differs from Myriogenospora linearis (Rehm) J.F. White & Glenn in the ascus and part-spore morphology, a different position in the molecular phylogeny, and the host range. We conclude that the two species are not congeneric and propose that M. linearis should be called Balansia linearis (Rehm) Diehl

Simulation of thermal plant optimization and hydraulic aspects of thermal distribution loops for large campuses
Following an introduction, the author describes Texas A&M University and its utilities system. After that, the author presents how to construct simulation models for chilled water and heating hot water distribution systems. The simulation model was used in a $2.3 million Ross Street chilled water pipe replacement project at Texas A&M University. A second project conducted at the University of Texas at San Antonio was used as an example to demonstrate how to identify and design an optimal distribution system by using a simulation model. The author found that the minor losses of these closed loop thermal distribution systems are significantly higher than potable water distribution systems. In the second part of the report, the author presents the latest development of software called the Plant Optimization Program, which can simulate cogeneration plant operation, estimate its operation cost and provide optimized operation suggestions. The author also developed detailed simulation models for a gas turbine and heat recovery steam generator and identified significant potential savings. Finally, the author also used a steam turbine as an example to present a multi-regression method on constructing simulation models by using basic statistics and optimization algorithms. This report presents a survey of the author??s working experience at the Energy Systems Laboratory (ESL) at Texas A&M University during the period of January 2002 through March 2004. The purpose of the above work was to allow the author to become familiar with the practice of engineering. The result is that the author knows how to complete a project from start to finish and understands how both technical and nontechnical aspects of a project need to be considered in order to ensure a quality deliverable and bring a project to successful completion. This report concludes that the objectives of the internship were successfully accomplished and that the requirements for the degree of Degree of Engineering have been satisfied
