Can socioeconomic and psychosocial factors predict the duration of orthodontic treatment?

This is a pre-copyedited, author-produced version of an article accepted for publication in European Journal of Orthodontics, following peer review. The version of record: Kamal Nakhleh, Easter Joury, Rabia Dean, Wagner Marcenes, Ama Johal, Can socioeconomic and psychosocial factors predict the duration of orthodontic treatment?, European Journal of Orthodontics, cjz074, https://doi.org/10.1093/ejo/cjz074 is available online at: https://doi.org/10.1093/ejo/cjz074.INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Very little is known about the role of socioeconomic and psychosocial factors in predicting orthodontic treatment duration. Thus, this study aimed to test whether socioeconomic position (SEP) and psychosocial factors, namely, family environment and resiliency can predict orthodontic treatment duration. METHODS: Data were analysed from a hospital-based, prospective, longitudinal study that recruited 145 consecutively selected 12- to 16-year-old male and female adolescents. Baseline SEP and psychosocial data were collected by a validated child self-completed questionnaire before the placement of fixed appliances. Linear regression analysis was used. RESULTS: The response rate was 98.6 per cent and the dropout was 8.2 per cent. Maternal emotional support was an important predictor of orthodontic treatment duration. Adolescents with high levels of maternal emotional support were more likely to have a shorter orthodontic treatment duration (by nearly four months) than those with low levels of maternal emotional support (P = 0.02). Parental SEP, paternal emotional support, maternal and paternal control, as well as resiliency were not significantly associated with orthodontic treatment duration (P > 0.05). The multivariable regression analysis (including age, gender, and malocclusion severity) confirmed the significance of maternal emotional support as a predictor of orthodontic treatment duration. CONCLUSIONS: Maternal emotional support is an important predictor of orthodontic treatment duration. This may be explained by a higher maternal involvement in the orthodontic treatment, which may have facilitated achieving the required orthodontic treatment outcome in a shorter treatment duration

The independent contribution of neighborhood disadvantage and individual-level socioeconomic position to self-reported oral health: a multilevel analysis

© Blackwell Munksgaard 2007ObjectivesTo examine the association between neighborhood disadvantage and individual-level socioeconomic position (SEP) and self-reported oral health.MethodsA population-based cross-sectional study conducted in 2003 among males and females aged 43-57 years. The sample comprised 2915 individuals and 60 neighborhoods and was selected using a stratified two-stage cluster design. Data were collected using a mail survey (69.4% response rate). Neighborhood disadvantage was measured using a census-based composite index, and individual-level SEP was measured using education and household income. Oral health was indicated by self-reports of the impact of oral conditions on quality of life (0 = none or minor, 1 = severe), self-rated oral health (0 = excellent-good, 1 = fair/poor) and missing teeth (measured as a quantitative outcome). Data were analyzed using multilevel modeling.ResultsAfter adjusting for age, sex, education, and household income, residents of socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods were significantly more likely than those in more advantaged neighborhoods to indicate negative impacts of oral conditions on quality of life, to assess their oral health as fair or poor, and to report greater tooth loss. In addition, respondents with low levels of education and those from a low income household reported poorer oral health for each outcome independent of neighborhood disadvantage.ConclusionsThe socioeconomic characteristics of neighborhoods are important for oral health over and above the socioeconomic characteristics of the people living in those neighborhoods. Policies and interventions to improve population oral health should be directed at the social, physical and infrastructural characteristics of places as well as individuals (i.e. the traditional target of intervention efforts).Gavin Turrell, Anne E. Roy Wagner died in September 2018. This article, written out of affection and admiration, shows the originality of Wagner’s thought and highlights its importance for understanding, not only current anthropology, increasingly influenced by his work, but also the anthropological machine and its great invention, culture. The article examines moments of his life and his tastes, and recounts anecdotes told by him to provide a better understanding of the disciplinary and theoretical links that Wagner estab-lished with authors like Claude Lévi-Strauss, Victor Turner, Gregory Bateson and Carlos Castaneda. The article concludes with an extensive bibliography for those who want to explore further the work of an author who is set to become a defining figure in the anthropology of the near future.

Hermann Wagner and the Illustrated German Flora. There are two authors of botanical publications with the name Hermann Wagner both born in 1824, one in Hadamar (Hesse), the other in Weißenfels (Saxony-Anhalt). For a long time it has been questionable who wrote the Illustrierte deutsche Flora (Illustrated German Flora) with the first edition 1869–1871. Evidence has been found that the author of this work was Hermann Wagner of Weißenfels who was a prolific writer especially of Natural History books for young people. In recent times even a third author, the geographer Hermann Wagner (1840–1929), has been claimed as author for the Flora. This is certainly a mistake
