Continuous vs. discontinuous garnet growth in mylonitic micaschists from northeastern Sardinia, Italy: Evidence from LA-ICPMS trace element mapping
No full textGarnet with complex, discontinuous zoning is a common occurrence in metamorphic terrains, and the rela tionship between major and trace element zoning can provide insight into the metamorphic evolution of the host rock. Mylonitic micaschists along the Posada-Asinara Shear Zone in the Axial Zone of the Sardinia Variscan chain contain garnet porphyroblasts, enveloped by the S2 schistosity, with distinct core and rim domains. A large garnet porphyroblasts was investigated by laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA ICPMS) mapping. The major element compositional variation follows a bell-shaped zoning, with Ca and Mn contents progressively decreasing, and Fe and Mg increasing, from the core to the outer rim. LA-ICPMS mapping revealed a thin and sharp annular enrichment zone in Y, Sc, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm at the mantle-rim boundary. The trace element (TE) compositional profiles show a central enrichment area for HREE (Tm, Yb, Lu). This enrich ment decreases progressively, as a function of atomic number, for Er, Ho and Dy. Elements with even lower atomic number (Tb, Gd, Eu and Sm), are depleted in this central domain, but their content increases in broad shoulders towards the garnet rim. The position of these lateral shoulders migrates progressively rimwards with decreasing atomic number. The REE distribution, trend and behavior in the growth zones of the garnet is an example of TE control during a continuous growth ruled by diffusion-limited REE uptake. The Y + HREE annular enrichment zone, interpreted as resulting from a decrease in the garnet growth rate, reflects a short-lived episode in the garnet growth history

No full text“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

No full textThis paper presents an environmental diagnosis based on public complaints on environmental
issues submitted to the Environmental Department of the Aveiro City Council, Portugal, between
2000 and 2005. It discusses the potential influences of these in local environmental planning
and governance. The paper has been organised into five sections. The first of these introduces
the study. The second section focuses on the conceptual approaches relating to environmental
grassroots movements, the main actors involved in these movements and the role played by
local government. It also contains a brief review of the most recent urban environmental
quality challenges in the European context together with a description of the main features of
the associated political and legal framework in Portugal. The third section describes the case
study and the methodology used. The results of the empirical study are detailed in the fourth
section. The final section critically analyses these results with emphases on the temporal
evolution of the submission of complaints, the actors involved, the local environmental problems
and their associated spatial pattern as well as the responses given by the City Council. This
information may then be used to provide a useful indicator for the perception of environmental
quality as well as a credible instrument for the visualisation and evaluation of local performance

No full textQuesto articolo contiene il testo di una e-mail che ho ricevuto da Massimo Quaini nel 2017, con la quale rispondeva al mio invito a partecipare alla quarta edizione dei Dialoghi tra geografia e filosofia, un seminario ‘dialogico’ che organizzo dal 2014 per favorire la discussione tra geografi e filosofi. A causa della sua malattia, sfortunatamente Quaini non è stato in grado di partecipare al seminario, ma mi ha scritto un’e-mail in cui mi invitava a scrivere un libro a quattro mani con lui. Questa e-mail è uno degli ultimi documenti scritti da Quaini: vi si trovano molte delle sue idee sul paesaggio, così come diverse riflessioni sull’identità e sul futuro della geografia e molto altro. Per questo motivo ho pensato che renderla pubblica potesse essere il modo migliore per onorarne la memoria
