Full author list omitted for brevity. For full list of authors see article. Apurv Soni and other co-authors are medical students at UMass Medical School.BACKGROUND: In recent years there has been a surge in the number of global health programs operated by academic institutions. However, most of the existing programs describe partnerships that are primarily faculty-driven and supported by extramural funding. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Research and Advocacy for Health in India (RAHI, or "pathfinder" in Hindi) and Support and Action Towards Health-Equity in India (SATHI, or "partnership" in Hindi) are 2 interconnected, collaborative efforts between the University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS) and Charutar Arogya Mandal (CAM), a medical college and a tertiary care center in rural western India. The RAHI-SATHI program is the culmination of a series of student/trainee-led research and capacity strengthening initiatives that received institutional support in the form of faculty mentorship and seed funding. RAHI-SATHI's trainee-led twinning approach overcomes traditional barriers faced by global health programs. Trainees help mitigate geographical barriers by acting as a bridge between members from different institutions, garner cultural insight through their ability to immerse themselves in a community, and overcome expertise limitations through pre-planned structured mentorship from faculty of both institutions. Trainees play a central role in cultivating trust among the team members and, in the process, they acquire personal leadership skills that may benefit them in their future careers. CONCLUSION: This paradigm of trainee-led twinning partnership promotes sustainability in an uncertain funding climate and provides a roadmap for conducting foundational work that is essential for the development of a broad, university-wide global health program

This essay is a testimonial of the author’s experiences, memories, and reflections about becoming a person/woman of color, discovering, and unearthing the meanings of racialization, white privilege, and white supremacy in the contemporary United States. The author gives voice to her new migrant experience as a Brown woman from India, positioning her reflections and learnings amidst the history and politics of colonialism and capitalist development, linking it to contemporary neoliberal academia in the United States. By sharing some events and encounters in her relatively short stint in Charlottesville, Virginia, between 2016 and 2019, the author reviews her attempts to critically analyze concepts like women of color, diversity, colorism, privilege, invisibility, and othering. The article further connects some of the author’s experiences of racialization in view of the growing politics of casteism and Brahmanical supremacy in India, locating and reassessing herself in the midst of Trump’s hardened propagation of white privilege in the United States and Modi’s Hindutva, both emanating a politics rooted in racialization, exploitation, and marginalization of the other.</p

Parental Desire in Queer Modernism: Reflections on Thomas Mann, Virginia Woolf, and Marcel Proust

This thesis critically examines how societal pressures compelling individuals towards parenthood are experienced, processed, and enacted by queer characters in selected works by Thomas Mann, Virginia Woolf, and Marcel Proust—authors widely regarded as queer today, even though they did not themselves claim such an identity in their own time. The texts chosen for this investigation are Mann’s Chaotic World and Childhood Sorrow and Death in Venice, Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway and Orlando, as well as various sections from Proust’s In Search of Lost Time. By bringing these texts into dialogue with each other on a pairwise basis, the thesis contends that Mann, Woolf, and Proust deploy a similar set of motifs and narrative strategies to depict the struggles of queer characters with the institution of parenthood. However, it also argues that each author presents a distinct and nuanced approach to this theme. To substantiate this argument, the thesis leverages insights and frameworks from queer theory, metaphor theory, and the social sciences—all predominantly derived from scholarship of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Simultaneously, the analysis is also contextualised within the broader socio-historical framework of the early twentieth century, which is to say the modernist period, with which these authors are conventionally associated

Evaluation of Health Information on the Web

    No full text
There is a growing number of websites containing patient or consumer health information. The assumption is that patients should be able to become knowledgeable about their health conditions and become more involved in the management of their own health, but there are concerns about the validity of the information to be found on the Web. The goal of this research is to develop a system that evaluates websites containing educational information about Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) to determine their quality and appropriateness for consumers. A small number of websites on IBD were evaluated manually by experts in the field. A number of different approaches based on machine learning algorithms evaluate websites as Excellent, Informative or Not Useful. Results of this approach are promising, but inconclusive as the dataset of websites for training and testing was not sufficiently large for any real conclusions to be made

Application of Neutrosophic Set Theory in Generalized Assignment Problem

    No full text
This paper presents the application of Neutrosophic Set Theory (NST) in solving Generalized Assignment Problem (GAP). GAP has been solved earlier under fuzzy environment. NST is a generalization of the concept of classical set, fuzzy set, interval-valued fuzzy set, intuitionistic fuzzy set. Elements of Neutrosophic set are characterized by a truth-membership function, falsity and also indeterminacy which is a more realistic way of expressing the parameters in real life problem. Here the elements of the cost matrix for the GAP are considered as neutrosophic elements which have not been considered earlier by any other author. The problem has been solved by evaluating score function matrix and then solving it by Extremum Difference Method (EDM) [1] to get the optimal assignment. The method has been demonstrated by a suitable numerical example

The symptomps of the Chaviranga vatham constitutes of pallornea, nausea, vomiting, water brash, weight loss, thirst, excessive in take of water Body tiredness, Sleepiness, loss of appetite. Siddha system of medicine is based on the mukutra theory and hence the treatment is mainly aimed to bring down the mukkutram to its equilibrium state and there by restoring the physiological condition of various thathus. By giving viresanam (Purgative) Vadha kutram is neutralised by giving sathi (Emetic). Pitha kutram is neutralised. the kapha kutram is neutralised by giving anjanam (Streaming) and others. The author in her work, taken the siddha parameters for the study work, namely envaigai thervugal and Iympull Iyakka vidhi (Panchapatchi) and Thegiyui Ilakkanam and establish the line of treatment and dietary regimen. AIM OF THE STUDY: A clinical study on standardization of siddha diagnostic methodology, line of treatment and dietary regimen for CHAVIRANGA VATHAM. OBJECTIVES : Primary: To document the Ennvagai thervugal in “CHAVIRANGA VATHAM”. Secondary: 1. To document the Thegiyin ilakkanam in “CHAVIRANGA VATHAM”. 2. To establish line of treatment. Advising dietary regimen. 3. To frame the diagnosis based on Iympull Iyakka Vidhi (Panchapatchi). CONCLUSION: In Chaviranga vatham study subjects “Vatha kabham” Naadi was noted predominently. The study proved that the siddha diagnostic techniques are less time taking, cost effective, easy to perform and non invasive. It was noted that middle age group (31-40) were affected by Chaviranga vatham. And their mental and physical health were affected, directly results in socio-occupational functions. In future studies the author is determined to study and document the results elaborately and extensively about Chaviranga vatham
