    No full text
The concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR) has grown exponentially in the last decade and is gradually becoming a rising trend within the hospitality sector. In Pulau Pinang, the hospitality sector is not new and its potential in delivering benefits to the local communities is still a much debated subject. This study investigated the CSR practices amongst the hoteliers with regard to their understanding of CSR, the activities performed in the hotel that affect the wellbeing of communities, the management of CSR, their reasons and challenges in implementing CSR. A series of in-depth interviews were undertaken with eight hoteliers in Pulau Pinang. Two focus group discussions were conducted involving employees and beneficiaries in order to obtain an insight into their prevailing perceptions and underpinning reasons for such perceptions. The study found that CSR practice is still considered to be at its infancy stage and it is a sign of the immaturity of CSR implementation in Pulau Pinang. The hoteliers in Pulau Pinang have failed to facilitate community access to benefits of CSR development in their respective localities, thereby denying them the opportunity to improve their wellbeing and livelihoods. Hoteliers are hindered by poor internal communication and a lack of social consciousness connecting their various programs. The seasonality of CSR activities is due irregular funding and lack of understanding and expertise in this area. The study stressed an urgent need for decisive measures at policy and planning level to achieve the true meaning of CSR. This study also proposed a model of genuine social change for hoteliers to participate successfully in CSR development in Pulau Pinang

This study explored the sustainable development goals (SDGs) initiatives of eight international hotels in Penang, Malaysia. The objective was to show how the hoteliers have adapted and refocused their corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts in response to the unique challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and how those measures affect SDGs fulfillment. The study looked at a current phenomenon considered multi-items as data sources collection including press releases, annual reports, magazines, and newsletters which were culled from their respective websites on the internet. The findings of this exploratory and descriptive analysis revealed that the hotel sector exhibited a commitment to the SDGs, but with varying approaches. The hotels under study contributed to all three key areas of sustainability (economic, social, and environmental) and thus covered most of the SDGs. The eight hotels profiled were actively involved in both responsible and sustainable behavior to help lessen their impact on the environment. The findings may be helpful for the hotels who are on the fence about putting the SDGs into action

The fields of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and human resource (HR) function have gained increasingly importance to corporate strategies. As many hotels are concerned with sustainability issues and CSR, the HR function is positioned to assist implementing and enhancing CSR strategy as well as administering its core functions. In most cases, CSR in the hotels are housed in HR Department where the managers have responsibility for the strategic application of CSR in the hotels. This paper presents a case study of five hotels in Penang Island, Malaysia as an attempt to demonstrate how Human Resource managers of these hotels perform their CSR practices. Specific focus is placed on the role of Human Resource managers who are not well-equipped with social work experience or background and specifically to investigate how these managers perceive CSR concept, the impact of their CSR programs on beneficiaries and the challenges that they encountered in the process. To answer these questions, we have conducted interviews with five managers from four and five star hotels in Penang. Our findings have reflected the importance of conceptualization of CSR particularly in hotel sector as well as gaining insight into current HR profession in administering CSR activities to consider someone with social work background in a bid to improve the quality of life of targeted communities. &nbsp

Descriptive analysis was performed in Microsoft Excel with data requested from the WOS Core Collection. Between 1984 and 2022, we analysed all 1268 papers in the WOS database. The purpose of this study was to assess the state of CSR research in Malaysia and identify its future directions. We separated publication results by productive journals, primary authors, and countries of origin for our descriptive analysis. Our research may be at the front of efforts to disseminate and communicate important scientific findings to researchers so that they can make lasting contributions to society

    No full text
The amount of food discarded by Malaysian households is substantial, to a great extent, avoidable. Minimizing food waste at the household level, therefore, plays a crucial part in the food chain responsibility. The little review has considered the effectiveness of interventions aimed at preventing food waste on itinerary stages of the food system. This significant gap, if filled, could help support those looking at reducing food waste in the developing world, providing knowledge of what interventions are specifically effective at preventing food waste. By using an extensive literature review, this paper clarified factors influencing food waste generation based on itinerary stages. This paper outlines five antecedents and recommendations for food waste reduction at the household level by using four strategies including sharing extra food and cooking, planned purchase schedule, skills on storing fresh food, and understanding family preferences which eventually can contribute to sustainable development goals. The integrated strategies are fruitful in improving household food waste management and preventing food waste generation as well as remedying existing policy gaps in Malaysia

    No full text
In the present aggressive world of competition, corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategies are becoming important weapons for organizations to perform well and achieve their goals. In this respect, organizations need to assess their CSR performance and improve their actions for a more genuine approach. We present an insightful framework to explain the effectiveness of CSR strategies by proposing four dimensions- weak versus strong, narrow versus broad, strategic versus genuine, and public relation (PR) profile versus no public relation (PR) profile. The proposed framework can be used to assess organizational CSR performance and as a decision tool for the CSR practices that should be improved especially in the wake of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The framework will also help devise ways and means to assist the nation to combat the repercussions of the slowdown and mitigate the after-effects of the pandemic by evaluating current CSR practices. Based on the proposed tool, a model of CSR management for genuine social change was developed to help organizations define its best practices and improve CSR actions
