Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Letras/Inglês e Literatura Correspondente, Florianópolis, 2010This dissertation analyzes the configuration of socioeconomic and national margins in two contemporary North-American documentaries entirely filmed in Brazil--Favela Rising (Jeff Zimbalist and Matt Mochary, 2005) and Manda Bala (Jason Kohn, 2008). In an attempt to contribute to the research on the representation of Brazil in foreign films, the investigation draws upon concepts such as globalization (Appadurai, 1996; Jameson, 2003), identity (Min-ha, 1997), and difference (Appadurai, 1996; Bhabha, 1996) to approach the documentaries not as fixed representations of a given reality, but as cultural texts that might or not be articulated through the notion of nation. The hypothesis is that the analyzed documentaries are sites for the configuration of margins and, for that reason, are privileged instances to observe the constitution of identities and differences. The conclusion-reached through individual and comparative analyses-is that the documentaries present very distinct articulations of socioeconomic and national margins. On one hand, Manda Bala, through an argumentative and circular structure, reinforces socioeconomic identities circumscribed by a Brazilian national margin. Besides presenting a totalizing portrayal of Brazil, Manda Bala reproduces a colonial gaze that fixes Brazilian society as cannibal, and reinforces the dominant gaze that it seeks to criticize. On the other hand, Favela Rising, through a mainly narrative structure, moves the gaze of national proportions towards the favela of Vigário Geral, in Rio de Janeiro. Less than creating a micro-portrait of Brazil, Favela Rising suggests the existence of social formations beyond national margins, whose political strength exists in its refusal of the negative difference imposed by socioeconomic margins. Another conclusion is that the documentaries present, in an opposite and complementary manner, contradictory forces at play in globalization

Approach to Laura Papo’s Dramatic Work: The Text and Its Meanings

    No full text
Laura Papo Bohoreta's theater, presented through the analysis of plays of the Sephardic tradition and social dramas, is the central topic of this work. On the one hand, we focus on the process of emancipation of the female characters, on the other, we highlight the need to preserve tradition. Two processes that the author combines in her dramatic work, either through conflicts between generations or through convergences between them. We present some of her texts as an example of her way of considering theater, where we find no gap between the dramatic text and the performance

In the whole of Brazilian writer Ana Miranda#s fictional narrative, the travel thematic # considered one of the most fertile themes of the western literature of all times # occupies a central space, and can even been seen as the most important structuring axis of Miranda#s works. The aim of the present thesis is to analyze the treatment given to the travel subject in the novels Desmundo, O retrato do rei, Dias & Dias and Amrik, emphasizing that, through the traveling narrators, Oribela, Mariana, Feliciana and Amina, the author promotes a connection between different cultures, genders, ethnics and generations, at the same time that establishes a profitable dialogue with the past in her invariant problematization concerning the limits and crossings between the fictional and the extra-literary narrative discourses that surrounds it, mainly the historical and the biographic ones

This is a work of course completion, prearranged with the advisor Ana Laura dos Reis Côrrea, is an experimental project in which, instead of dealing directly with the literary theories learned during the course, uses art as a method. So one part is analysis of a literary novel, aiming to understand the issue of authorship, and another, the annex of the construction of this novel. Literature is, as a rule, the representation of reality, but, what would be reality and how does it influence every human being? In the work "The Last Resistance" the present influences the future and the present is influenced by the past, in a non-linear order of time. In the same way as reality is modified by collective memory. To what extent is collective memory responsible for the literary production of a particular nation? In this way we seek to understand and discuss the importance of the individual author inserted in a collective authorship

This article analyses the strategic role of the Argentinian essay in the building up of a national identity. The study encompasses three moments: the generation of 1837, the generation of 1880, and the Centenary of the Republic movement. It retrieves also the perspective of an “extra-centric” intellectual, Bernando Canal Feijóo, who criticizes the socalled national-themed essay, claiming that Argentinian literature is the expression of a single portion of the country: the coast, or the pampas. The author looks into Feijoo’s essay on the “regionalization” of cultural works, where he favours a complex and dynamic area, the Argentinian “northwest”.Fil: Elbirt, Ana Laura. In this paper, we will look into the work of Laura Papo Bohoreta, a Sephardic author who lived and created in the first half of the twentieth century. Given that all her works are written in her native Jewish-Spanish language, our goal in this work is to point out the specifics of her creativity, in order to bring it closer to a wider readership. We especially aim to emphasize her enlightening role, and the role of guardian of tradition, culture, and language which she created and inherited. A particularly important segment on which her overall creativity is based is the role of women in society at that time. With this work, we will show how Laura Papo, through her female characters and their struggle, paved the way for Sephardic women to achieve their intellectual development and the process of affirming a woman outside her home

Abstract: Ana Cristina Cesar is understood as a reference for several contemporary writers. The present work seeks to investigate the effect of the poet's work in the works of her heirs, starting from three striking aspects identified in Ana C.'s poetry: language, body and femininity. With that in mind, we analyzed the works of ten poets: Alice Sant'Anna, Ana Martins Marques, Angélica Freitas, Armando Freitas Filho, Ismar Tirelli Neto, Júlia de Carvalho Hansen, Laura Liuzzi, Marcos Siscar, Marília Garcia and Nina Rizzi. We chose the methodology of interviews, as well as the analysis of the each author's poetry, in order to understand the devices explored by the marginal poet in contemporary writing. Comparing the texts of the marginal author with the work of her heirs, it is possible to notice that this presence produces a freer and more intimate form of enunciation. For the contextualization of her poetry, the works of Ítalo Moriconi (1996), Maria Lucia de Barros Camargo (2003) and Annita Costa Malufe (2010 and 2011) are used as a basis. As a theoretical basis for the effect, we used the work of Wolfgang Iser in The act of reading (1996), which analyzes the experience of reception from the reading effects the text produces. In order to understand the relationships that contemporary poetry establishes with literary tradition, we took Marjorie Perloff's foundations in Unoriginal genius: poetry by other means in the new century (2013). By identifying an aesthetic lineage of Ana Cristina Cesar's poetry, it is possible to understand the ways in which her writing authorized the experimentation of poetic practices, using missive writing, intimacy and otherness

Towards a National Health Service in Spain: The Search for Equity and Efficiency

    No full text
All Southern European countries have enacted reform laws during the last decade with the in tention of turning their traditional social- security health-care systems into national health services. Spain was no exception to this reform thrust and the General Health Law of 1986 brought about a significant institutional change. The purpose of this article is twofold. First, it assesses the decision-making process that led to the approval of the 1986 reform law by contemplating the roles played by the main social and political actors. Moreover, the influence of policy legacies and the impact of regime change are considered. Second, the article evaluates the implementation process of the reform law as regards the coverage criteria and span, the financial sources and the services provided. The analysis of these indicators leads to the conclusion that the health-care system in Spain has been transformed into a national health service, although some minor characteristics of the previous model persist.(Ana Marta
