Programmed on techno-scientific basis, the European city of the third millennium risks to forget or trivialize the destructions and mass slaughters brought about by the Second World War. Durs Grünbein’s poetics of the frottage shows how this denial fails to account for life in all its unique expressions making European cities a backdrop of camouflages. The cosmopolitanism pursued by Grünbein roots him in Dresden and Hellerau as places, where both Lebensreform and education for everyone were made possible. Fantasied and phantomised as a possibility for the future, the images of Grünbein’s childhood and adolescence punctuate and even haunt his works. Together with Piazza del Campo and with the pursuit of genius loci. The Island that does not exist becomes, in the poetics of the German-speaking author, the frame of a representability for European citizenship nourished by the ideal instances inspired by the Ventotene Manifesto (1941) and the Hertenstein Colloquies (1946).Programmata su basi tecno-scientifiche, la città europea del terzo millennio rischia di dimenticare o banalizzare le distruzioni e i massacri di massa provocati dalla Seconda guerra mondiale.
«Body effects and theology of the flesh in Georg Büchner’s Danton’s death».
The present contribution aims at highlighting the political, social and private intertwinings of Georg Büchner’s first play, written when he was a twenty-one year old German student of anatomy engaged in revolutionary events. Between rhetorical figures and the economics of Danton’s death investigates the limits of sovereignty in Western societies as heritage of the French Revolution and its excesses. Body incarnates its own effects by means of paradoxical situations, wit and ambivalence. Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalysis yield useful clues to investigate the semiotic value of the flesh as well as revolutionary rhetoric and semantic denial. Robespierre’s fantasy of purity nourishes a Sadian-sadistic innocence. The condensation of low and high, purity and filth, discipline and disorder, theological and scatological elements, denounces a scattered social order dominated by perversion, ravaged by deception, exploitation and betrayal. Büchner’s clinical clear-eyed, autoptic analysis reaches beyond the idea of sovereignty to a perverted desire of mastery breaking out into violence and fanaticism. Considering the overabundant flesh the body becomes theery protagonist of the drama: the place of possession and exclusion, idolatry and cannibalism.
What dominates is a pure, wasteful expenditure; autonomous and unlinking acts reject the Oedipal conflict. This entails the substitution of a personal law for the collective one thus suggesting that the history of the Western onto-theological tradition is the history of the sequestration of the life of the body into fetishes and the disavowal of creatureliness, as Paul Celan argues in The Meridian. Celan draws attention to the ethical questions raised by Lucile as a way of relating to otherness, i. e. to poetry as the very voice of each single creature
Advanced acoustic emission methods for damage mechanisms monitoring in aerospace materials
This thesis develops advanced Acoustic Emission (AE) techniques for monitoring and characterizing damage in aerospace materials. It focuses on AlSi10Mg produced by Selective Laser Melting (SLM) and on Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) composites. These materials are crucial for aerospace due to their unique mechanical properties. AlSi10Mg offers high strength and fatigue resistance. It is used in critical aerospace parts. CFRP composites provide stiffness strength and corrosion resistance, making them suitable for demanding aerospace environments. Monitoring damage in these materials is essential to ensure safety and structural integrity over time.
This research aims to improve damage monitoring by combining traditional AE methods with deep learning frameworks. Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is vital in aerospace. It allows early detection of material degradation and reduces the risk of in-service damages. Traditional SHM methods can be limited in accuracy for complex materials such as AlSi10Mg and CFRP composites. This thesis introduces a robust approach that uses advanced methods to address these challenges.
Tensile tests were conducted on AlSi10Mg specimens built in different orientations. AE signals were recorded to examine their mechanical behavior. Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) was used to analyze these signals. This allowed differentiation between elastic and plastic deformation. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) were then used to classify AE signals. Several CNN architectures, including AlexNet and SqueezeNet, were tested to improve classification accuracy. A novel approach was also introduced. It combines a Fuzzy Artificial Bee Colony (FABC) algorithm with CNN and CWT-scalogram analysis. This method includes data augmentation to improve robustness and prevent overfitting.
For CFRP composites, a Deep Autoencoder (DAE) framework was developed to automate damage mode characterization during mechanical testing. The DAE reduced the complexity of AE signals and extracted essential features. These features were clustered to identify damage modes like matrix cracking, delamination, and fiber breakage. By automating damage classification, the DAE enhances SHM by providing accurate real-time damage assessments.
This thesis shows that combining traditional AE features with deep learning models improves damage source classification for aerospace materials. These methods make SHM systems more efficient and precise. They offer advanced solutions for monitoring and maintaining structural integrity in aerospace. The research contributes to safer and more reliable aerospace applications
Novel C-Shaped Shape Memory Alloy Connectors for Vacuum Flanges: Modeling and Tests
Shape memory alloy (SMA)-based fasteners and connectors represent a class of successful SMA components that are increasingly used especially in marine or aerospace applications. The present paper aims to investigate novel C-Shaped SMA connectors for room-temperature vacuum pipes within particle accelerators. The proposed connectors exhibit the two-way shape memory effect (TW-SME), so they can generate significant axial recovery forces and they can be dismounted by temperature variations. Proper thermo-mechanical training procedures were performed to tune the mechanical and functional response of the connectors to make them suitable for the investigated application. The thermo-mechanical and functional response of the SMA fasteners in both free and constrained recovery conditions were assessed by strain gauge and extensometer tests as well as by finite element analyses based on a constitutive model, recently developed by the authors, accounting for TW-SME and plasticity. Comparison between experimental and numerical results validates the proposed model. Moreover, results give useful, important information in terms of SMA transformation temperatures, generated recovery forces as well as shape recovery capabilities
Stress intensity factor in alumina-zirconia composites by a hybrid finite element method
The present paper describes a numerical method which is able to calculate the stress intensity factor in two dimensional heterogeneous materials under mechanical and thermal loads. The proposed method uses two hybrid element formulations to model the second phase heterogeneities of the material and the crack tips. The method was used to analyse alumina-zirconia ceramic materials, and the effects due to the zirconia t→m phase transformation and the thermal stresses, which develop during the cooling stage of sintering, were taken into account in calculating the stress intensity factor
Structural transition under uniaxial deformation in a NiTi pseudo-elastic alloy
NiTi shape memory alloys (SMAs) are increasingly used in many engineering and medical
applications, because they combine special functional properties, such as shape memory effect and pseudoelasticity,
with good mechanical strength and biocompatibility. However, the microstructural changes associated
with these functional properties are not yet completely known. In this work a NiTi pseudo-elastic alloy was
investigated by means of X-ray diffraction in order to assess micro-structural transformations under mechanical
uniaxial deformation. The results have been compared with those obtained after complete shape recovery
