This paper deals with the ritual food of Michoacan Tarascan Indians that lived in the XVth and XVIth centuries, as documented in the famous literary work named Relación de Michoacán. The source was written around 1540 by a Franciscan friar and was based on the native informants oral testimonies. From the friar´s work stands out the process by which a tribe becomes a chiefdom; this process might be also observed throughout the changes in food consumption habits, making emphasis on the food eaten within a ritual context or that offered to the gods. As documented by the Relación de Michoacán, the ritual meals occur in just about all important gatherings among Tarascans, often accompanied by fermented alcoholic beverages.</p

Those who have access to this essay will be able to verify in the course of its reading, the conceptual and practical differences existing between two fundamental concepts for the development of politics and public administration: governability and governance. The concern to develop a research work on the conceptualization of these topics arises from the very common use of the first of them, governability, and its negation, ungovernability. Nowadays it is very common to hear in the verbal and written speeches of political and social leaders the use of these terms, which have been taken out of their real conception to place them in erroneous and common use, with the interest of calling attention to the impossibility of making decisions and their rapid execution. On the other hand, the use of the word governance is not common, much less the knowledge of its meaning, even for many, governance is synonymous with governability. In this essay the author intends to elucidate the great differences in meaning between one term and the other, as well as the most common confusions in this regard. This is with the intention of understanding both the need to dissociate them despite their consubstantiality, with the idea of understanding the importance of both in the development of the democratic processes required by states, especially inspired by what has frequently happened in Latin America with the atrophy of its political institutionality and its democratic dysfunctionality. Governance is a very appropriate concept for the study and definition of the relationships within the institutional framework that makes up a state organization, as well as the articulation that its different components develop in the execution of public policies, both for their efficiency and effectiveness. In the case of governance, it is the possibility of generating the greatest participation of the different strategic actors of society, understood as those with veto power in the decisions taken, which demands that they be contemplated within a true and broad process of political communication, in order to achieve the intersection of a common interest of the three key sectors of society: public opinion, politicians and the media. During the reading of the various chapters of the essay, readers will be able to broaden their knowledge of other key concepts and their importance, as well as the relationship between them, which are key to the understanding of the central concepts of governance and governability.Universidad Nacional, Costa RicaInstituto de Estudios Latinoamericano

What a Lied of Schoenberg can teach us about a Sonata of Santoro?

The analysis of Arnold Schoenberg’s song Sommermüg Op.48 N.1 show us that the dodecaphonic techniques employed by the composer, in a period when the method had already reached its maturity, exhibit a larger variety of compositional strategies than textbooks teach us. The segmentation of the series in pitch sets with complementary functions of melodic counterpoint and of harmonic support is one of them. His search for symmetrical constructions is another concern to which we use to give less attention than the composer had whished. The analysis of Schoenberg’s music allowed us the revisit Claudio Santoro’s Sonata 1942 for piano, one of the pioneer Brazilian pieces of music in the dodecaphonic style. The detailed exam of the technique of the work reveals a young composer already with complete control of the dodecaphonic method, what lead us to guess the motives that induced our musicology to charge him with lack of knowledge and disregard for the style’s orthodoxy. We concluded that, among other reasons, this unfair critique was motivated by an academic preference for the style of Webern, an author who, at that moment, could not have been used by Santoro as a model

CTOD estimation procedure for clad pipe girth welds subjected to bending load

No full text
AbstractThis work describes a crack driving force estimation procedure applicable for structural integrity assessments of dissimilar girth welds in clad pipes subjected to high levels of bending load. The purpose of this study is to explore the application of the equivalent stress-strain relationship approach coupled with a weld bevel simplification scheme and the EPRI procedure to evaluate the CTOD for defects located at the weld centerline, including the effects of the weld strength mismatch, weld bevel geometry and the clad layer thickness. Parametric 3D finite element analyses of pipes with circumferential part-through cracks are performed to validate the weld joint simplification and to assess the accuracy of the crack driving forces predictions. Finally, the results show that the estimations using the proposed methodology are in close agreement to those obtained directly from finite element analyse

Asymmetries in European Labour Markets and Monetary Policy in Euroland. ENEPRI Occasional Paper No. 1, September 2003

No full text
[From the Introduction]. The present paper addresses some of the key issues the ECB would have to address to make the best of this combination of asymmetric labour markets and a common monetary policy. Research on these issues is widely scattered because both labour market and monetary policy specialists mainly just look at their own field. Hence, one purpose of this paper is to bring together two strands of the literature. The preliminary results suggest that the ECB may be well advised to reconsider its decision-making process. Further, since these asymmetries would pose less of a problem if labour markets were flexible and adapted more or less smoothly to changes in the economic environment, it is also important to analyse how far the attempts to liberalise European labour markets have progressed

γδ T cell distribution in the adventitial layer of non-fertile cystic echinococcosis cysts from cattle livers

No full text
Indexación: Scopus.Cystic Echinococcosis (CE) is a zoonotic disease caused by Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato, forming cysts in ruminants and humans with major health and economic impacts. The immune response to CE cysts is complex, with fertility linked to the host’s inflammatory reaction. This study examines γδ T cell distribution and role within the adventitial layer of non-fertile CE cysts in cattle, including cases co-infected with the trematode Fasciola hepatica (FH), a known immune response modulator. Using immunohistochemistry and double immunofluorescence, we observed γδ T cells dispersed in the adventitial layer, enriched in inflammatory zones. Co-infected cases (CE + FH+) showed a reduced γδ T cell proportion among CD3+ T cells compared to non-coinfected cases, suggesting an immunoregulatory effect of FH. Our findings align with prior studies showing γδ T cell recruitment in granulomatous diseases in ruminants but reveal that co-infection alters this response. This study provides the first detailed characterization of γδ T cells in cattle CE cysts, emphasizing their potential role in granulomatous immune responses. It highlights the need for further research into mechanisms influencing CE cyst fertility and immune modulation in helminth co-infections, advancing our understanding of host-pathogen interactions and informing disease management strategies. © The Author(s) 2025.https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-025-95690-8Funding text The authors would like to thank the staff of “Servicio Agrícola y Ganadero” (SAG) for their support and assistance in collecting E. granulosus sensu lato cysts and F. hepatica infected liver samples at abattoirs.

The research project, whose results make up the bulk of the present dissertation, has been aimed at re-evaluating the role of the site of Naqada (Upper Egypt) in the sequence of social, economic, political and cultural development of the late Egyptian prehistory and in the formation process of the ancient Egyptian state, based on the evidence collected at the site by the Italian Archaeological Mission of the "Istituto Universitario Orientale", Naples (today University of Naples "L’Orientale"), between 1977 and 1986 (direction: Prof. Claudio Barocas; Prof. Rodolfo Fattovich, Prof. Maurizio Tosi), and in the light of the acquisitions made during the last decades thanks to a multitude of new studies and investigations carried out in other regions of the Nile Valley. The re-examination, recently conducted by the author, of the materials retrieved by the Italian team in the course of nine seasons of excavation and survey at the settlement of Naqada (Zawaydah / W.M.F. Petrie's "South Town") has suggested that the main phase of occupation of the site was the period between Naqada IIC-D and Naqada IIIA (c. 3600-3150 B.C.), and that part of the settlement, at least, was occupied by a sort of administrative-cultic/ceremonial complex during this phase. The archaeological evidence provided by the Italian investigations at Naqada, complemented with other data (funerary, iconographic, etc.), both from old and recent research carried out at the same site and in other regions of the Nile Valley, also allows to broadly outline the evolution of this centre: from a small rural village, not dissimilar from the numerous settlements scattered along the rest of the region and other parts of Upper Egypt, and probably with a low degree of social differentiation (Naqada I), to a relatively large and dense center, residence of "chiefs" exercising a centralized control of the local economy (subsistence and wealth goods, and probably labor force), also thanks to the use of administrative devices and within a possible cultural/ceremonial framework (middle-end of Naqada II), until to its decline and inclusion in a larger polity (beginning of Naqada III). Several factors and mechanisms seem to have led Naqada to play a prominent role within the Upper Egyptian political scenario, in some phases of the Predynastic (middle-end of Naqada II). Among these, and what might have also been the main contribution of Naqada to the formation process of the state in ancient Egypt, is the use of administration connected with the centralized control of the economy: at Naqada we have one of the earliest evidence of use of seals and other administrative-accounting tools ever retrieved from Egypt. This evidence may date back to Naqada IIC period (c. 3600 B.C.), if not earlier
