Una isla propia: sobre una novela poemática de Azorín

    No full text
La isla sin aurora is a novel in which the author during his lifetime has collected his ideas regarding the creation of art and aesthetic pleasure. The novel became for Azorin not only a literary genre but also a genre of his life. Moreover, the poetry freed from a specific mould became the essence of people and things. The real writer has put aside the particular to delve into the universal meaning of our species. Each artist makes the journey through their particular island and upon arrival realizes that the most important work of the writer is the process of self discovery and self realisation.

Visitors Visiting Books: Visitors' Books at the Library of Innerpeffray

    No full text
The Library of Innerpeffray, in rural Perthshire, is the oldest free public lending library in Scotland and contains unique manuscript records which are invaluable resources for the fields of library and tourism history. This article argues that two key developments contributed to Innerpeffray’s transformation from a lending library into a reference library and visitor attraction: the impact of one of the library’s patrons, Robert Hay Drummond, and the growth of tourism in mid-nineteenth-century Perthshire, within the wider development of Scottish tourism. Two sources are explored for the first time: annual reports sent to the Governors of Innerpeffray between 1891-1907 by the then-Keeper of Books, Mrs Christian Birnie; and the first volume of the library’s visitors’ books, which contains visitor details from 1859-97. The article presents some preliminary findings about inscribed locations, gender, and repeat visitors to emphasise the value of visitors’ books which primarily contain visitor details without additional commentary.Output Status: Forthcoming/Available Onlin

Abstract: This article proposes a scenic reading of the book Diario de una enfermera written by the Spanish author Isla Correyero, i.e. the paradigmatic scenes in the text are located and described, which especially refer to the experience of one’s own death and the death of the other. The Translator's Task: Recreating the Textual Atmosphere of Isla Cofre Mítico by Eugenio Fernández Granell

    No full text
In this dissertation, I introduce the Spanish painter, poet, essayist, and novelist Eugenio Fernández Granell and his seminal surrealist work, Isla cofre mítico. Granell was born in Galicia, Spain, in 1912 and can easily be described as a key figure within the surrealist movement in the second half of the twentieth century. Isla cofre mítico was Granell’s first published book, and it is the fullest published discussion about André Breton’s short work Martinique charmeuse de serpents, giving followers of Surrealism a deeper understanding of Breton’s time in Martinique. When you first pick up Granell’s book Isla cofre mítico, you are immediately struck by the cover’s fantastic, mythical creature composed of vibrant colors and amorphous features. The image is a pictorial representation of Granell’s island book that is Isla cofre mítico. The book represents the act of translation in all senses of the word. In it, Granell translates his violent experiences from the Spanish Civil War into words and images. He translates the foreign sights and sounds of the Caribbean geography and culture as he tries to make sense of the place that becomes his temporary home. He translates his experience of the world in the aftermath of the Second World War. For Granell, the aesthetic vision of André Breton is the only mode of expression capable of translating his experiences and thoughts into visual images and words. Isla cofre mítico is a visual, textual, and auditory experiment in translation for the original author and for me, the translator. In Isla cofre mítico, Granell translates the soundscapes of the island through the sounds created in and between words. He translates French passages from André Breton’s Martinique charmeuse de serpents into Spanish, as well as passages from other literary texts and historical documents. He translates images into words, and he juxtaposes words to produce sound and create meaning. How does one approach the translation of such a complex work? This dissertation presents an analysis of the complex textual environment of Granell’s text as well as my interpretive act of translation. I present a number of considerations for the translation process, including approaches to recreating complex patterns of repetition and textual musicality. I highlight the problematic role of textual ambiguity created by the author as translator from French into Spanish and my role as translator from Spanish into English. I also bring in translators who have contributed to the discussion of translation as an act of violence, and I attempt to demonstrate that Granell challenges previous notions of translation violence through his clashes of textual juxtapositions

Education and episcopacy : the universities of Scotland in the fifteenth century

    No full text
Educational provision in Scotland was revolutionised in the fifteenth century through the foundation of three universities, or studia generale, at St Andrews, Glasgow and Aberdeen. These institutions can be viewed as part of the general expansion in higher education across Europe from the late-fourteenth century, which saw the establishment of many new centres of learning, often intended to serve local needs. Their impact on Scotland ought to have been profound; in theory, they removed the need for its scholars to continue to seek higher education at the universities of England or the continent. Scotland’s fifteenth-century universities were essentially episcopal foundations, formally instituted by bishops within the cathedral cities of their dioceses, designed to meet the educational needs and career aspirations of the clergy. They are not entirely neglected subjects; the previous generation of university historians – including A. Dunlop, J. Durkan and L. J. Macfarlane – did much to recover the institutional, organisational and curricular developments that shaped their character. Less well explored, are the over-arching political themes that influenced the evolution of university provision in fifteenth-century Scotland as a whole. Similarly under-researched, is the impact of these foundations on the scholarly community, and society more generally. This thesis explores these comparatively neglected themes in two parts. Part I presents a short narrative, offering a more politically sensitive interpretation of the introduction and expansion of higher educational provision in Scotland. Part II explores the impact of these foundations on Scottish scholars. The nature of extant sources inhibits reconstruction of the full extent of their influence on student numbers and patterns of university attendance. Instead, Part II presents a thorough quantitative and qualitative prosopographical study of the Scottish episcopate within the context of this embryonic era of university provision in Scotland. In so doing, this thesis offers new insights into a neglected aspect of contemporary clerical culture as well as the politics of fifteenth-century academic learning
