This research continues the current debate about the role of the images and the words in the architectural design persuasion, where we emphasize the increasing valuation of written documents (FORTY, 2004; MARKUS; CAMERON, 2002), the seduction for the graphical representation (DURAND, 2003) and the rhetorical effects of the graphical and textual resources (TOSTRUP, 1999). Based on these quarrels, we look for verify in the graduate final projects the relation between the design texts and images. From the PROJEDATA, database of the PROJETAR research group (UFRN), we selected the final projects of two brazilians universities, UFRN and USP, that in a first analysis, they had shown as ideal types of two distinct design presentation models, respectively: texts and drawings in separated documents, or combined in an only support. Based on Markus explanation about the function and the content of the texts, on the Durand perspective with regard to graphical representation uses and on Tostrup point of view concerning the rhetorical potential of texts and drawings, we analyze, in a set of 25 projects, how the students relate the textual and imagetical speeches. For this, we related the focus of each speech, in order to verify the possible coherence between both. We conclude that in the model of USP final project the coherence between the texts and the drawings is clearer than in the model adopted in UFRNEsta pesquisa prossegue o debate atual sobre o papel das imagens e das palavras no convencimento do projeto arquitetônico, em que se destacam a valorização crescente dos
Using X-Culture in International Business Courses: Challenges and Best Practices
Structured as an interactive discussion session, this session is led by internationally experienced
professors representing a number of universities from across Europe, Asia, and North America.
The panel is designed to provide insights and reflections on how the X-Culture project is utilized
across a variety of business courses spanning 7 universities across 8 countries, the Czech
Republic, France, Germany, Greece, India, Italy, Portugal, and the USA. The session will
contain prepared prompts for conversation organized across several thematic categories, with
most of the session offering interaction and discussion with the audience. This session aims to
bring together academics with X-Culture experience and those considering adding this project to
their course to provide an opportunity to share insights focused on developing ways to optimize
X-Culture use in IB courses.
X-Culture (www.X-Culture.org), launched in 2010, provides the opportunity for students
from different countries to work in global virtual teams (GVTs) and complete a business project,
learning the challenges and best practices of global cross-cultural collaboration. X-Culture is a
large-scale international experiential learning project. About 6,000 students from 140 universities
in over 50 countries on six continents participate every semester. X-Culture has reached the
milestone of 100,000 student participants with over 103,000 alumni as of mid-2023. Students are
placed in GVTs with approximately five to seven members. Multinational corporations team up
with X-Culture annually and present their challenges. Working in GVTs, students develop
solutions to the challenges presented by corporate partners. Students experience first-hand the difficulties and learn best practices of international collaboration and business plan development
skills. Combined, the group of panelists has many years of project experience and developed
unique implementation strategies. This is more of a ‘community-of-scholars-facilitateddiscussion’
session rather than a typical panel-presentation session to provide ample opportunity
for the exchange of ideas and interaction with the audience. This panel has been very well
attended throughout the past 10+ years at the annual Academy of Management and Academy of
International Business conferences and, more recently, at the annual EIBA conferences
Autofiction and romance in Daniel Guebel's literary work
In this thesis, I propose to study the work of Daniel Guebel, seen from the angle of the autofiction- fiction notional pair. Daniel Guebel (Buenos Aires, 1956) is a recognized Argentinian writer whose prolific work runs through the prism of literature and media. He is the author of fifteen novels, three collections of short stories and seven plays.Argentinian literature, for twenty years, has been characterized by a powerful resurgence of autobiographical practices. El Llanto (Tears, 1992) César Aira could mark the starting point of this dynamic, which the literary press and critics, to recently, continue to stress (el giro autobiographical essay (2008) by Alberto Giordano; but also Nora Catelli, in the era of intimidad (2007) and José Amícola, como autofiguración Autobiography (2008). This new representation of the individual in autofiction opens an even wider field of ego centered writings by providing the self a double dimension: on one hand, a hybrid aspect by a mode of enunciation combining autobiography and fictional narrative (a double filiation that its inventor Serge Doubrovsky pointed in his first definition of "a fiction made of strictly real facts and events"); and on the other hand in the author’s identity, marking a new relationship between the subject and his new fictional self. This new self runs through Daniel Guebel’s romantic and dramatic writing (which only depicts faces to faces) and comes under different aspects. The writing can be collective, Daniel Guebel was part of a literary group "grupo Shanghai" and collaborated in the creation of the literary criticism journal Babel, revista de libros. The joint creation then marks his writing course and fills it with an aesthetic that finds its extension in cooperation writing considered with a close friend, from the same literary group, Sergio Bizzio. Together, they wrote two plays and collections Carnicerías argentinas Dos obras ordinarias (1994) and then a brief romance in El día feliz la vida Charlie Feiling in tribute to the friend and author. For Daniel Guebel, what once began as a duo often continues solo. This connection to the other builds on to another singularity of the author who, when not cooperating, sometimes writes in parallel. The most striking case being the one of Guebel’s Derrumbe and Bizzio’s Era el cielo, that were written at the same time and on the same subject. This writing in parallel demonstrates the "literary twinning" that unites the two authors and whose base could be the shared common aesthetic around the magazine Babel, which we can assume, has marked a generation of writers. The work of Daniel Guebel also offers a textual space appropriate to formal questioning. Indeed, this second segment of my research attempts to define a style morphology, tautology which highlights a new conception of the literary form without reinventing it. Indeed, for a decade Daniel Guebel has been writing a major work - his masterpiece - El Absoluto (unpublished) true cradle of his inspiration. From this book stand out narrative nuclei which novelistic potential calls out to the author, who, from then on, extracts them and builds on new works from these matrixes. To date, the tree view around El Absoluto adds up to six works: Derrumbe (2008), Ella (2010), Los padres Sherezade (2008) Aside Escritores muertos (2009), La carne de Evita (2012) and El caso Voynich (2009) one of which, La belleza de los difuntos, still unpublished. This thesis attempts to link the study of textual space questioning that Guebel leads over his work (dialectical short forms / narrative cores / long forms/ “genre hybridisation” processes...) and the one of self fictional and romantic dimensions of a production which appears to me as the most innovative of its generation

Infrastructure and device-to-device cellular data offloading
This thesis addresses the overload problem of the Wireless Internet service Providers' (WISP) network. The growth of mobile broadband subscription has been leading several bottlenecks to WISPs, such as, bandwidth availability and resource sharing over a single cellular cell. WISPs can move o data trac from its infrastructure by deploying small cells, such as femtocells, to public WiFi networks or, more recently, todevice-to-device opportunistic networks. This work evaluates the feasibility to ooad mobile data trac using WiFi hotspots, proposes a framework to opportunistic data ooading and incentive mechanisms to encourage users cooperation. We mapped 3G and WiFi coverage through several bus routes in Paris in order to evaluate how users and WISPs can benet from the existing infrastructure. Our results indicate that the deployed WISPs access points can ooad part of the datatrac, however restrictions such as association time and the authentication process may reduce the amount of ooaded data.We propose a multi-criteria decision-making framework, called OppLite, to ooad data from 3G networks using opportunistic device-to-device communications. Tracedriven simulations showed that opportunistic mobile ooading can expand coverage and network eciency, ooading up to 36% of data in certain scenarios. Thus, the eectiveness of opportunistic mobile ooading depends mainly of the delay toleranceof the applications and whether the user cooperates. Since opportunistic ooading depends on the user's willingness to oer his/herresources to others, we propose a message-based incentive mechanism that builds a reputation rank based on the source of messages received by the forwarding nodes, called MINEIRO. The network supports up to 60% of nodes with selsh behavior without performance degradation in a random mobility scenario. After this threshold, MINEIRO kept the delivery rate and the delay constant. Meanwhile, in a scenario with social-based mobility, selsh behavior degrades the network performance quickly.

Network slicing for QoS and QoE driven network management
Abstract: Computer networks are becoming increasingly complex, with several interconnected devices, protocols, control knobs, and applications sharing a physical infrastructure. Different applications can have different Quality of Service (QoS) requirements to operate correctly. The user-perceived experience, i.e., Quality of Experience (QoE), when consuming network applications is also a relevant indicator that must be accounted for, to minimize customer churn and offer a satisfactory experience to the users. Such complexity of the networks and applications makes it difficult for network operators to define a one-fits-all configuration or manually set device parameters tailored to each application. Thus, automating the configuration of network functions and enabling the allocation of the appropriate resources for each application is crucial to support the scaling of future networks. To realize this automation, several components are required for monitoring network performance, acting to control the behavior of network flows, and managing the available resources to accommodate the different applications sharing the infrastructure. Network slicing is one of the main technologies enabling such tailored configurations, but other supporting enablers must still be integrated and combined into an overarching solution. This thesis presents solutions tackling the different activities required for automating the management of network slices including real-time monitoring of their performances, estimating user experience when applicable, exerting control over network flows, and automatically adjusting resources in the face of issues. Therefore, we build a complete solution to realize network slicing using both QoS and QoE measurements as feedback signals, implemented in real devices with a strong experimental component. Each component presented in this thesis was experimentally evaluated using real testbeds including wired and wireless segments, highlighting the feasibility of our solutions
Reproducible simulation of Smart Grid communication protocols
Smart electrical energy distribution networks, better known as Smart Grids, have spread around the world aiming, among other objectives, to make the distribution of electrical energy more efficient and safe. In order to make them work as expected, they depend of three communication protocols defined in the IEC 61850 standard: GOOSE (Generic Object Oriented System Event), MMS (Manufacturing Message Specification) and SV (Sampled Values). With the deployment of increasingly advanced mobile networks around the world, they are expected to serve as the communications infrastructure for Smart Grid protocols. However, it is necessary to evaluate how to ensure the quality requirements of Smart Grids in this scenario. Assessments of these possibilities can be carried out through simulation experiments. This masters dissertation presents a detailed review of Smart Grid simulation environments, concluding that most existing simulators focus on simulating Smart Grid power mechanisms, considering communication mechanisms as an opaque box.\" The few simulators that focus on communication mechanisms are closed-source, which prevents modifications to explore, for example, futuristic scenarios. Due to the lack of open-source simulators that consider communication mechanisms, this dissertation also presents a methodology for simulating the GOOSE and SV protocols. This methodology is applied in the development of the free software GridGooseSV, a module for the ns-3 simulator that allows the simulation of both protocols. Experiments performed with GridGooseSV showed linear resource consumption as the number of SV publishers increased and the ability to perform real-time emulation experiments. Regarding the simulation of the GOOSE protocol, it was possible to evaluate how synthetic delays in communication links affected the sending of critical protocol messages. GridGooseSV is released under the GPL-3.0 license and constitutes the main contribution of this masters thesis
Abstract : Within the context of research in the project CORDIALL and TRACOR developed at UFMG and UFSC (Brazil), this PhD thesis presents a methodological proposal for corpus compilation, based on the profiles and the needs of 20 Master's thesis in the interface with Translation Studies, Corpus Linguistics, and Systemic-Functional Linguistics, developed in Brazil between 2003 and 2010. The methodological and theoretical concepts that conduces this thesis are presented by the Corpus-Based Method presented in Corpus Linguistics (Barnbrook, 1996 Kennedy, 1998; Bowker, 2001; Mason, 2008), and the Corpus-Based Translation Studies (cf. Baker, 1995; Olohan, 2004; Vasconcellos., 2009; Assis, 2012; Feitosa, 2005; Fernandes, 2006). The methods followed in this research consist in: colecting and describing the 20 MA thesis mencioned before; studying their methods; creating a fast and economic methodological proposal for corpora compiling, using programming features of Word Processor and Spreadsheet Application; and testing this method in an Pilot Study. The analysis of the methodological profile of these 20 Master thesis identifies that their parallel bilingual small corpus compilation processes are the following: (i) corpus preparation for a semi-automatic alignment; (ii) alignment; (iii) corpus annotation and annotation edition; and (iv) data quantification. Nevertheless, the analysis points to methodological inconsistencies in the processes of corpus compilation, which can impair the investigation itself or the continuation of it in further studies. The inconsistencies concern the: (i) high amount of time spent on the compilation processes; (ii) high number of stages involved in just one process; (iii) high number of transitions between different software; and (iv) high production of documents. Based on these results, this Thesis proposes to solve such inconsistencies by creating an efficiate method of corpus compilation, that aims to: (i) fasten the compilation processes; (ii) reduce the number of stages involved in each process; (iii) reduce the number of software accessed during the corpus compilation; (iv) reduce the number of production of different documents; and plus (v) to turn the corpus annotation more flexible. The proposal is developed on MS Office software (MS Word and MS Excel). Templates with Macros and Formula are created and tested in a Pilot Study, whose results are compared with the corpus compilation results in Fleuri (2006). The methodological proposal reveals to fasten the process of (i) corpus preparation for the alignment; (ii) alignment; (iii) data quantification; and to make the corpus annotation more flexible and the data display more organized (in tables and graphics). The Pilot Study, comparing to Fleuri (2006), reduced to ¼ the total time involved in the corpus compilation; to ½ the total number of stages involved in the corpus compilation; to 1/5 the total number of transitions among different software and to less than ½ the number of document produced
