L’ordine delle parole nelle memorie di Giovanni Arrivabene

    No full text
Investigated in this study are the memories of John Arrivabene (1787-1881), published for the first time in 1860 in Turin, living author, under the title “Around an era of my life”. They tell the exile of the author, who was forced to flee Italy to escape to a second imprisonment. Because the order of the words is one of the least investigated, and focuses primarily Italian contemporary, it was decided to investigate, at the level of topological syntax, three phenomena: the inversions and tmesi of the verb, the subject's position and finally, the position of the adjective. The autobiographical prose of John Arrivabene was tied to tradition in some aspects (the anteposition of adjective), tending to modernizing practice inaugurated by Foscolo in other aspects (limited sporadic use of inversions of the verb) This paper gives an account, through examples drawn from the text, the language of the examination and the results obtained

In this essay, the language of Silvio Pellico’s My Prisons will be analyzed from a phonetic and morphological perspective. We will anticipate some elements of syntax that will be the subject of a future study. Pellico’s prose proves to be connected to the tradition in its phonetics and in its morphology, but it is its syntax that renders it more modern. The language used in My Prisons has been compared with the language of Alessandro Manzoni and we have noticed the differences and the similarities. From our systematic study of the language of My Prisons, for this article we will only excerpt a limited number of phonetic and morphological aspects, selected for their relevance for the comparison to nineteenth-century language and contemporary use. Pellico’s autobiography was published in 1832 and immediately became a model for the memories of the Risorgimento: numerous memories written in the 1800s have evidently been influenced by Pellico’s My Prisons

The Role of D-Amino Acids in Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimer's disease (AD), the main cause of dementia worldwide, is characterized by a complex and multifactorial etiology. In large part, excitatory neurotransmission in the central nervous system is mediated by glutamate and its receptors are involved in synaptic plasticity. The N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors, which require the agonist glutamate and a coagonist such as glycine or the D-enantiomer of serine for activation, play a main role here. A second D-amino acid, D-aspartate, acts as agonist of NMDA receptors. D-amino acids, present in low amounts in nature and long considered to be of bacterial origin, have distinctive functions in mammals. In recent years, alterations in physiological levels of various D-amino acids have been linked to various pathological states, ranging from chronic kidney disease to neurological disorders. Actually, the level of NMDA receptor signaling must be balanced to promote neuronal survival and prevent neurodegeneration: this signaling in AD is affected mainly by glutamate availability and modulation of the receptor's functions. Here, we report the experimental findings linking D-serine and D-aspartate, through NMDA receptor modulation, to AD and cognitive functions. Interestingly, AD progression has been also associated with the enzymes related to D-amino acid metabolism as well as with glucose and serine metabolism. Furthermore, the D-serine and D-/total serine ratio in serum have been recently proposed as biomarkers of AD progression. A greater understanding of the role of D-amino acids in excitotoxicity related to the pathogenesis of AD will facilitate novel therapeutic treatments to cure the disease and improve life expectancy

The paper will focus on the analysis of Guido Crepax revolutionary comic book character Valentina that belongs to the golden age of the Italian comic-book genre fumetto. The aim is to explore whether Guido Crepax Valentina character was a "living doll" filling male fantasies of her creator or she was a woman empowered by her author struggling for many of the values of the women's culture that feminists today are trying to introduce into the mainstream. It also addresses research questions that focus on comic books and gender and empowerment at the decade of sexual liberation.Through Valentina case study the present paper is going to study an approach on the concept of woman in comics, and touch the border of female empowerment issue in contemporary world taking in consideration that her revolutionary strong and independent figure was born in a society where women have been frequently viewed as passive and represented as inferior to men and where questions of sexuality were considered taboo. Despite the fact that she angered some feminists by the way she was portrayed as an object of male gaze or a damsel in distress, there is nothing anti-feminist about Valentina. The aim here is to uncover feminist themes in the stories of Valentina and to explore what empowered her and made her a contemporary icon of style and symbol of liberated women
