BASIC KNOWLEDGE AND ATTITUDES OF ESP STUDENTS TO WORLD ENGLISHES
Get PDFThe English for Specific Purposes (ESP) enterprise is protean and comprises three realms of language, pedagogy and content studies. Since it not only focuses on content-based, the responsive nature of ESP should also spotlight the development of language as well as pedagogy. World Englishes (WEs) as consistent growth in ELT practice, has confirmed its position due to the shifting paradigm of teaching ‘only’ native standard Englishes. This paper starts with outlining why WEs should be introduced in ESP classrooms. Later, the paper reports research findings on the students’ knowledge of WEs based on the proposals of Kirkpatrick and Kachru. It also explores the ESP students’ attitudes toward WEs. The ESP students’ basic knowledge and some future constructs to instill WEs concept for ESP students will conclude this preliminary study.Keywords: basic knowledge, attitudes, ESP, World Englishes (WEs)</jats:p
Envisioning Online English Teaching in Indonesia: A Digital Autoethnographic Account
Get PDFThe onset of the global pandemic has become a radical turn of brick-and-mortar schooling to online distance learning. In this respect, continuous dialogue, and evaluation around the issue of online learning should be nurtured, particularly from actual pedagogical practices. Drawing on a digital autoethnographic account of the author, this article explores everyday online English teaching in tertiary education. I collected data using textual, visual, and aural experiences, corroborated by Zoom auto-recorded chats and screenshots as the artefacts of my online learning and teaching activities. The data were analyzed using the Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework that focused on social, cognitive, and teaching presence of online learning. It is found that social presence, mainly caused by unstable internet connections, has been severely impacted, which was detrimental to class interactivity, learning goals, and learning assessment. The autoethnographic account in the current study depicts micro-level pedagogical activities that were then reflected to identify some concerns at meso-(institutional), and macro-level (governmental/national) that need to be addressed. The study implies that collaborative works and assessments of online learning shall be sustained by teachers and pertinent stakeholders. Eventually, the significance of this article lies beyond the explication of everyday disrupted pedagogy, as it echoes wider socio-economic-political realities in Indonesia
The Implementation of Transition-action-details Strategy to Improve the Students' Writing Ability in Recount Text
Get PDFThis research aimed to explain the improvement of the students' writing ability and the students' response through the implementation of “Transition-Action-Details” strategy in teaching writing. The researcher used a classroom action research principle to collect the data that consisted of two cycles. Each cycle consisted of four meetings. The findings of the research were the improvement of students' writing ability in cycle I to cycle II was 12.2%, and the other side, students' participation or activeness at cycle I in the 1st meeting was 45%, 2nd meeting 59%, 3rd meeting was 63% and 4th meeting was 73 %. So the average score was 60%. Where in cycle II, in the 1st meeting was 67%, 2nd meeting was 72%, 3rd meeting was 68% and 4th meeting was 78%. There is a significant score in the average score (71.87%). Based on the average score above, it had improvement from cycle I to cycle II (11.64 %)
To What Extend Are Learning Strategies related to Successful Learners in Writing IELTS in Indonesia

Amongst four skills tested in IELTS, writing IELTS is considered to be
one of the most challenging language skills to master. It is believed that
writing for second language learners is arguably the strenuous skill to be
used in attaining communicative competence. Therefore, discussing
learning strategies and good language learners related to IELTS task 2
using four IELTS assessment criteria is still interesting. Considering the
significances of all strategies classification, it can be justified those
strategies could be very helpful in Writing IELTS Task 2. Particularly,
writing IELTS would be significantly improved by using Cognitive,
metacognitive, and affective strategies. The reason is that cognitive
strategies relate to practicing as the main regular improvement in writing
IELTS, Metacognitive strategies connect to planning and brainstorming,
and Affective strategies relate to emotional control including anxiety.
However, there are some aspects that have to be considered in order to
overcome possible problems and strategic limitations. First, there should
be explicit instruction and steps from teachers to apply for all of them.
Second, Learner should have a capability to distinguish and choose
appropriate strategies.

Navigating Teaching Practicum in the Real Classroom: Insights from ESL Teaching Practicum Experiences
Get PDFTeaching practicum is one of the compulsory courses that pre-service ESL teachers have to accomplish prior to the completion of their study. Under the lens of experiential learning theory, this study aims to find out pre-service English teachers’ challenges of teaching practicum and how they overcome them. Interviews were used as instruments in this multiple case study, focusing on three pre-service English teachers who participated in the AJARMI program during the 2022–2023 academic year. The findings of this study were analyzed using thematic analysis. The PSETs faced challenges related to students' behaviour, preparation of instructional materials, and mentoring. They handled them with organizing lessons, acting as an assertive teacher, devising a backup plan, and adapting to the school system. The implications of this study suggest that teacher education programs should provide more comprehensive training on classroom management, instructional material preparation, and effective mentoring strategies to better prepare pre-service teachers for the realities of the classroom
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
