    Freedom and destiny

286 p.Personal freedom is a central problem for modern men and women as well as for our society. Writing out of his long experience as a therapist, Rollo May, author of the groundbreaking Love and Will, shows how personal freedom is in daily crisis. Modern man has forgotten that personal freedom can be experienced only in juxtaposition with human destiny. The conscious freedom to think and feel and speak authentically is a uniquely human quality. Always in conflict with one's destiny, this freedom is the foundation of human values such as love, honesty, and courage. Without personal freedom there will be no lasting values in our culture. Yet destiny is the vital design of the universe expressed in each of us. May proposes the steps for our rediscovery of the relation between freedom and destiny. He emphasizes that both are intertwined and that one gives birth to the other. Yet the renewal of life can come only with a recovery of the polarity between freedom and destiny

    No full text
In the first systematic study of Kierkegaard’s psychology, Kierkegaard’s Psychology (1972), written in Danish by Kresten Nordentoft, the author considers that the first attempt to present Kierkegaard’s psychological theories was made by Rollo May in The Meaning of Anxiety (1950). In 1958, together with Ernest Angel and Henri Ellenberguer, May also edited Existence. A new dimension in Psychiatry and Psychology. The aim of this article is to describe the way in which May conceives Kierkegaard as a “psychologist”, based on the analysis of existentialism and its coincidence with psychoanalysis in the diagnosis of the “crisis of the modern individual”. For doing so, the concepts of anxiety and existence are taken as the main thematic lines of description. A new dimension in Psychiatry and Psychology.

    The Renewal of Life

Rollo May speaks about paradoxes. To confront our anxiety is a way of the renewal of our lives. We must confront our despair if we are to experience renewal in life. Out of the balance between one\u27s freedom and one\u27s nature comes not only health in its dynamic sense but there comes also creativity. May also speaks of the paradox of authentic love arising from the fact that we know that someday we will die. These truths should give us a new approach to our values and meaning to our lives. This address was delivered in the spring of 1982 at Sacred Heart University as the first Dr. William H. Conley Charter Day Lecture

REVISITANDO A ANSIEDADE NA OBRA DE ROLLO MAY: : DIÁLOGOS COM A FENOMENOLOGIA CLÍNICA

In contemporary times, discussions about anxiety distance it from its existential connotation, highlighting its morbid character as a symptom or mental disorder. Rollo May, an American psychologist, in the mid twentieth century points to the need to broaden this view by proposing existential psychotherapy. In this article, we carry out theoretical research aiming to investigate anxiety in the writings of this author, in dialogue with a clinical phenomenology of ambiguity. For clinical phenomenology, anxiety is part of a fundamental affective disposition that lies at the base of existence and its pathological expression reveals the impairment in intersubjective subject /world contact. Rollo May approaches this view, relating anxiety with freedom and becoming, but distances itself from clinical phenomenology by referencing an encapsulated subjectivity.
