Jean-Michel Racault : Virginie between nature and virtue. Narrative cohesion and ideological contradiction in Paul et Virginie. In this novel, which aims to demonstrate that " happiness consists in living according to natural virtue ", the episode of Virginie's bath presents a problem. Behind the apparent impersonality of an objective description, the rigorous organisation of the account in which the external disorder of the physical world is paralleled by the heroine's internal unease, makes us see that the two series of events are the same. Thus Nature, until then a benign divinity, seems to change its character brutally, and the appearance of sexuality, which is incestuous and therefore forbidden, shatters the initial Eden-like world. This leads to a re-working of the novel's ideology, restoring — without perhaps the author being aware — the coherence which the work has often been accused of lacking.Racault Jean-Michel. [Departement_IRSTEA]MA [TR1_IRSTEA]TED / EPUREA full scale MBR plant has been monitored for nearly two years with intense analyses campaigns during the summers of 2005 and 2006. This paper presents the results of seasonal variations on the process and filtration performances and on the sludge characteristics (filterability, Soluble Material Products). During both summers 2005 and 2006, the transmembrane pressure (TMP) experienced a slight increase in the range 0.18 - 0.23 bar. The detailed analysis of the filtration performances showed the significant role of the process aeration as it changes the hydrodynamic conditions around the membrane. Despite a low F/M ratio (between 0.015 and 0.050 kgBOD5.kgMLVSS-1.d-1), the seasonal load clearly impacted on the sludge filterability but without affecting the fouling rate which also didn't seem to be influenced by the SMP concentrations

iMarNet: an ocean biogeochemistry model intercomparison project within a common physical ocean modelling framework

Ocean biogeochemistry (OBGC) models span a wide variety of complexities, including highly simplified nutrient-restoring schemes, nutrient–phytoplankton–zooplankton–detritus (NPZD) models that crudely represent the marine biota, models that represent a broader trophic structure by grouping organisms as plankton functional types (PFTs) based on their biogeochemical role (dynamic green ocean models) and ecosystem models that group organisms by ecological function and trait. OBGC models are now integral components of Earth system models (ESMs), but they compete for computing resources with higher resolution dynamical setups and with other components such as atmospheric chemistry and terrestrial vegetation schemes. As such, the choice of OBGC in ESMs needs to balance model complexity and realism alongside relative computing cost. Here we present an intercomparison of six OBGC models that were candidates for implementation within the next UK Earth system model (UKESM1). The models cover a large range of biological complexity (from 7 to 57 tracers) but all include representations of at least the nitrogen, carbon, alkalinity and oxygen cycles. Each OBGC model was coupled to the ocean general circulation model Nucleus for European Modelling of the Ocean (NEMO) and results from physically identical hindcast simulations were compared. Model skill was evaluated for biogeochemical metrics of global-scale bulk properties using conventional statistical techniques. The computing cost of each model was also measured in standardised tests run at two resource levels. No model is shown to consistently outperform all other models across all metrics. Nonetheless, the simpler models are broadly closer to observations across a number of fields and thus offer a high-efficiency option for ESMs that prioritise high-resolution climate dynamics. However, simpler models provide limited insight into more complex marine biogeochemical processes and ecosystem pathways, and a parallel approach of low-resolution climate dynamics and high-complexity biogeochemistry is desirable in order to provide additional insights into biogeochemistry–climate interactions

[Departement_IRSTEA]GMA [TR1_IRSTEA]21 - TECHNEAU / EPURENational audienceThe hydrodynamic behaviour of a biofilter used for nitrification of domestic effluents in tertiary treatment is explored. The plant is an industrial prototype of a horizontal suface of 144 m2. It is filled with a media whose granulometry is 3,5 mm, on a height of 4 m. The residence time distributions were obtained from lithium chloride tracer experiments. The space variability of the average residence times of the tracer measured at the surface of biofilter is very significant and is explained mainly by the geometry of system of distribution of the effluent under the biofilter, the residence times within the material bed being on the contrary homogeneous. The hydrodnamic behaviour of the biofilter is close to a plug flow with axial dispersion. The consequences of the measured heterogeneity on the quality of the treated effluent are evaluated using a model of nitrification by the biofilm.

Hydrodynamic behaviour of a full-scale submerged biofilter and its possible influence on performances

The hydrodynamic behaviour of a 110 m2 full-scale submerged upflow biofilter, filled with 2.8 m of floating media and used for tertiary nitrification of treated domestic sewage was investigated. Residence time distributions were obtained from lithium chloride tracer experiments. Four trials were performed at 3.7 and 6.5–6.7 mh−1, once without aeration. Spatial differences in the mean residence time of a given cross-section were in the range of 30–40% and can be attributed to the distribution system of the influent at the bottom of the filter. Sampling at the bottom and top of the filter bed media showed that the behaviour of the filter bed itself is close to a dispersed plug flow reactor. The dispersion lengths are in the range 60–100 mm, increase with flow rate and are unaffected by the aeration. From simple model calculations, it was concluded that the heterogeneity observed within the filter bed would have no significant effect on water quality. Heterogeneity due to the distribution of effluent in the lower part of the filter would also have a very limited effect in the case of sudden changes in the effluent substrate concentration.</jats:p

A análise dos excertos de narrativa poética baseia-se principalmente na teoria de Jean-Yves Tadié (1994).Abstract : The present work aims at proposing a commented retranslation on the novel Paul et Virginie, by the French author Bernardin de Saint-Pierre. As a secondary objective, we propose an analysis of the Brazilian translations of this novel from 1906 to 2008 into the Brazilian literary system under the perspective of "View of Translations" and a study of the translated and not translated paratexts. For both the translational analysis and the retranslation we used representative excerpts from the theoretical principles of Antoine Berman (1995), Gerard Genette (2010), and Lawrence Venuti (1995). The analysis of the excerpts of the poetic narrative is based mainly on Jean-Yves Tadié's theory
