Dynamic Ranking of IEEE VIS Author Importance

No full text
The ranking of authors is an important task within the field of sci- entometrics, and several different methods and criteria exist. In this poster abstract, we present an interactive visualization approach for exploring combinations of several different ranking criteria for a given set of publications and its associated co-author network. Ourvisualization tool allows the user to gain insights into the relative importance of individual authors as well as into the interdependency of different ranking criteria

Vis-NIR equipped soil penetrometer

No full text
Soil penetrometers capable of measuring soil reflectance along the direction of insertion of the penetrometer are provided. The penetrometer can house an array of sensors, such as, for example, a Vis-NIR reflectance sensor, a load cell, a displacement sensor, and a moisture sensor. The reflectance data collected using the penetrometer can allow the interpretation and quantification of soil constituents and contaminants at high vertical resolution, such as 3 cm or more.U

Interfacial Thermodynamics of Coexisting Aqueous Polymer Solutions

This dataset belongs to the PhD thesis of Mark Vis, "Interfacial Thermodynamics of Coexisting Aqueous Polymer Solutions" (Utrecht University, 2015). This dataset contains supplementary movies to Chapter 5. A PDF copy of the PhD thesis is included and can also be accessed through Utrecht University’s library, http://dspace.library.uu.nl/handle/1874/323671. Abstract of Chapter 5: Ultrathin plate-like colloidal particles are effective candidates for Pickering stabilization of water-in-water emulsions, a stabilization that is complicated by the thickness and ultralow tension of the water–water interface. Here we present experiments and theory for the effect of gibbsite nanoplates on phase-separated aqueous solutions of biopolymers dextran and nongelling fish gelatin. Plate-like particles have the advantage of blocking much of the interface while simultaneously having a low mass. Additionally, the amount of blocked interface is practically independent of the equilibrium angle θ at which the water–water interface contacts the nanoplates, as opposed to the wetting of spheres. As a result, the adsorption of nanoplates is stronger than for spheres with the same maximal cross section, except at θ = 90°

The Seventh EU Enlargement and Beyond: Pre-Accession Policy vis-à-vis the Western Balkans Revisited

No full text
The accession of Croatia to the European Union is yet another milestone in the history of EU enlargements. After seven enlargement rounds the membership has increased from the original six founding countries to twenty-eight Member States. Many claim, quite rightly, that the enlargement policy is the most successful of the EU’s foreign policy tools. Even those who bring this bold argument into doubt have to agree that, when contrasted with other external policies, and the European Neighbourhood Policy in particular, the overall balance sheet of the enlargement policy is positive. The accession of Croatia is symbolic in a number of ways. As argued in this article, it closes one big chapter in the history of EU enlargements but, at the same time, opens another. Croatia is – most likely – the last country to join the EU this decade. After a sometimes painful pre-accession process, it has proved to be a ‘success story’ of the stabilisation and asso-ciation process. As the European Commission claims, it is living proof that the raison d’être and mechanics of the policy employed vis-à-vis the Western Balkans have their merits. However, a quick look into the future proves that the next enlargements will be far more complicated affairs. The current list of candidates and potential candidates is a mix of a heavyweight (Turkey) and the Western Balkan countries, all struggling to meet the fundamental prerequisites for a democracy based on the rule of law. Failure to comply with the Copenhagen criteria, together with a dwindling appetite for further enlargement among some Member States, create a rather dangerous mix. This article argues that following recent enhancements to the pre-accession policy, further improvements are necessary to make future expansions of the European Union possible. If only from the geopolitical perspective, this is in the joint interest of the European Union, its Member States and the countries of the Western Balkans

Hero vis-à-vis Author

No full text
This article examines the complex relationship between the hero and the author. Through a reflexive phenomenological tone, it is argued that the hero depicts the emotional seed of the subject itself while the author is the beautiful mind that projects events and worlds by cultivating the intellectual seed. The call of adventure as a ringing bell for the hero and the author, the proclaimed Death of the Author, the almost confirmed Death of the Hero, and the horizon of the Teacher’s Death are discussed. In this setting, the fear from the authority of the hero and the author remains imminent. This article attempts to move beyond the horizon of death certificates in order to reach primary frequencies at the nexus between author and hero, derived from the very inner tones of the human psyche that come as a call to take us away to the beautiful world of Aha Erlebnis. The author and the hero – they do matter
