    Wittgenstein Reading

    No full text
Wittgenstein's thought is reflected in his reading and reception of other authors. "Wittgenstein Reading" approaches the moment of literature as a vehicle of self-reflection for Wittgenstein. What sounds, on the surface, like criticism (e.g. of Shakespeare) can equally be understood as a simple registration of Wittgenstein's own reaction, hence a piece of self-diagnosis or self-analysis. The book brings a representative sample of authors, from Shakespeare, Goethe, or Dostoyevsky to some that have received far less attention in Wittgenstein scholarship like Kleist, Lessing, Lewis Carroll, or Wilhelm Busch and Johann Nepomuk Nestroy. Furthermore, the volume offers means for the cultural contextualization of Wittgenstein's thoughts. Unique to this book is its internal design. The editors' Introduction sets the scene with regards to both biography and theory, while each of the subsequent chapters takes a quotation from Wittgenstein on a particular author as its point of departure for developing a more specific theme relating to the writer in question. This format serves to avoid the well-trodden paths of discussions on the relationship between philosophy and literature, allowing for unconventional observations to be made. Furthermore, the volume offers means for the cultural contextualization of Wittgenstein's thoughts

CardioPulse: developments in the treatment of aortic aneurysms in 2014

Since the introduction of EndoVascular Aortic Repair (EVAR) for the treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) more than 20 years ago, the technique has evolved rapidly, from tubular grafts for fairly simple abdominal aortic anatomy, to bifurcated, fenestrated, branched, or parallel grafts for complex aortic aneurysms, no longer confined to the infrarenal abdominal aorta

Interactive Multiple Objective Programming Using Tchebycheff Programs and Artificial Neural Networks

    No full text
A new interactive multiple objective programming procedure is developed that combines the strengths of the Interactive Weighted Tchebycheff Procedure (Steuer and Choo 1983) and the Interactive FFANN Procedure (Sun, Stam and Steuer 1993). In this new procedure, nondominated trial solutions are generated by solving Augmented Weighted Tchebycheff Programs (Steuer 1986), based on which the decision maker articulates his/her preference information by assigning "values" to these solutions or by making pairwise comparisons. The elicited preference information is used to train a feed-forward artificial neural network, which in turn is used to screen new trial solutions for presentation to decision maker in the next iteration. Computational results are reported, comparing the current procedure with the Interactive Weighted Tchebycheff Procedure and the Interactive FFANN Procedure. The results show that this new procedure yields good quality solutions

Interactive multiple objective programming using Tchebycheff programs and artificial neural networks

A new interactive multiple objective programming procedure is developed that combines the strengths of the interactive weighted Tchebycheff procedure (Steuer and Choo. Mathematical Programming 1983;26(1):326–44.) and the interactive FFANN procedure (Sun, Stam and Steuer. Management Science 1996;42(6):835–49.). In this new procedure, nondominated solutions are generated by solving augmented weighted Tchebycheff programs (Steuer. Multiple criteria optimization: theory, computation and application. New York: Wiley, 1986.). The decision maker indicates preference information by assigning “values” to or by making pairwise comparisons among these solutions. The revealed preference information is then used to train a feed-forward artificial neural network. The trained feed-forward artificial neural network is used to screen new solutions for presentation to the decision maker on the next iteration. The computational experiments, comparing the current procedure with the interactive weighted Tchebycheff procedure and the interactive FFANN procedure, produced encouraging results

Ausmaß und Stärke der automatischen Stabilisatoren in Deutschland vor dem Hintergrund der jüngsten Steuer- und Sozialreformen

    No full text

Electoral competition in a multidimensional political arena - parallel moves instead of convergence in policy platforms

    No full text
This paper provides a theoretical model of electoral competition in a multidimensional political arena with a heterogenous electorate and politically active interest groups. The emerging pattern of movement in policy platforms is fundamentally different to the concept of convergence proposed by the spatial theory of voting. Rather than the centre of the scale of policy preference, its extreme ends, occupied by dominant-issue-voters and interest groups, attract the policy platforms. The platforms move in parallel instead of towards each other, while the difference in policy platforms is reduced only under certain conditions. --voters,interest groups, ideology, political parties, convergence
