Typescript (photocopy). The purpose of this study was to develop an inventory of core competencies in computer technology required of secondary school teachers, to provide decision-makers with an information base that could assist in the development of a computer-related curriculum for both preservice and inservice teacher training programs in Taiwan. More specifically, the objectives of this study were: (1) to establish a rank-ordered listing of computer related competencies required of secondary school teachers in Taiwan from 1985 through the year 2000, and (2) to determine if there were differences in the ratings assigned to the computer related competencies by classroom teachers, secondary school principals, teacher educators, and experts from government and industry. The Delphi method used to accomplish the stated objectives involved mailing a series of three questionnaires to a group of 48 computer educators selected from four computer education populations in Taiwan. Through the Delphi process 60 competency statements were generated. Based upon the analysis of the data collected, the following conclusions were drawn: (1) the Delphi panel members in computer education in Taiwan are very future-oriented; (2) the wide-ranging competency statements generated by the Delphi panel reflected the various philosophies brought together by this technique; (3) there were no significant differences in mean ratings among the four expert groups on 56 competencies (93.33%); (4) practicing teachers and principals feel a critical need to develop and/or improve skills in educational computing; (5) twenty-six of the 60 competencies were deemed as "extremely important" and "mandatory" for a secondary school teacher in Taiwan, 31 were considered as "of moderate importance" and "may be needed", and three competencies were considered as "not important" or "not needed". Based upon the research findings of this study, eight recommendations were made: (1) the computer competencies identified in this study should be integrated into teacher certification programs in Taiwan and reviewed to determine those that are preservice or inservice in nature; (2) strategies for assisting institutions to incorporate computer assisted instruction (CAI) opportunities into preservice teacher education courses should be developed; (3) a quantifiable measuring device should be developed to determine levels of attainment concerning these competencies; . . . Exploring performance attribution: the case of quality managment systems adoptions and business performance

Purpose. Accreditation to the ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems Standard has proven to be a persistent and growing phenomenon in services and manufacturing, yet to date little attempt has been made to explore how performance results in cross-sectional research may be attributed to different causation mechanisms and how their influences may alter over time. Methodology. The paper defines four possible causation mechanisms before searching and analysing the empirical literature on quality management system certification to ISO 9001 and business performance for evidence of their causal influence. Findings. From the analyses it is found that the benefit that can safely be attributed to the treatment-effect of ISO 9001 accreditation is lower waste; while the benefits of lower costs and better quality are less likely unless motives for adoption are developmental rather than externally driven. From an analysis of longitudinal studies a strong selection-mechanism is found where more profitable firms have a greater propensity to adopt than less profitable firms. From the finding propositions are developed to show how the influence of these mechanisms change over time. Implications for research. The existence of the selection-mechanism has profound implications for interpreting business performance achievements because the benefits that are attributed to the treatment-effect from adopting quality management system standards are likely to be greatly inflated by the influence of the selection-mechanism. The author suggests that richer theory is needed that can incorporate bi-directional influences and new research is needed to explore the underlying causes of the selection effect. Value of paper. The paper is believed to be the first to systematically explore attribution of performance in the ISO 9001 literature. Its findings provide new insights into the complexities of attribution of performance in studies of new practices and systems. Keywords: Performance, Causation, Quality, ISO 9001 Certification

Fiction and film : the influence of cinema on writers from Trinidad and Jamaica 1950-1985

This thesis considers the relationship between film and novels that were published by writers from Trinidad and Jamaica between the years 1950 - 1985. Through close textual analysis and by utilising a combination of cinematic and literary theories, the thesis examines the extent to which filmic references have been absorbed into fictional writing and reflects upon the implications for such cultural transformations. The thesis also provides a detailed, historical background to the development of cinema in both islands, with a further analysis of the specific role played by the Hindi film in Trinidad. The interdisciplinary nature of the literary analysis and the detailed historical data contained herein should be considered an original contribution to knowledge within the field of Caribbean studies

    Perioperative uses of histamine antagonists

Histamine release and adverse pseudoallergic/allergic reactions during the perioperative period occur frequently. The incidence of such reactions is 20%-30% for all grades of severity, 1%-5% for systemic reactions, and 0.1%-0.5% for life-threatening reactions. They can be elicited by all commonly used anesthetic agents and by surgical interventions. Both the incidence and severity can be reduced by the use of combined prophylaxis with H1- + H2-receptor antagonists. The authors recommend that this prophylaxis be given to the following groups of patients: those with a history of adverse reactions or history of allergy, patients undergoing surgery with a high risk of histamine release, elderly patients, and those with poor physical status due to underlying systemic diseases. These indications have been developed by heuristic medical decision-making, including a decision tree

The science behind creating portfolios that adapt to market changes “After ten years of poor stock market returns and yet great bond and gold returns, there is a real thirst for an all-weather portfolio in a high-risk period. Dick Stoken builds that diversified portfolio and also introduces some timing methods to improve returns and lower risks. This is a very timely and useful book.” ?Ned Davis, Senior Investment Strategist, Ned Davis Research, Inc. “Dick Stoken’s Survival of the Fittest for Investors is a masterful and unique dissection of what makes the market tick. It represents an indispensable and brand-new approach for the serious investor. A must on every investor’s reading list.” ?Leo Melamed, Chairman Emeritus, CME Group “I selected Stoken’s Strategic Investment Timing as the Best Investment Book of the Year in the 1985 Stock Trader’s Almanac; Survival of the Fittest for Investors will be a leading contender for Best Investment Book of the Year in the upcoming 2013 edition.” ?Yale Hirsch, founder, Stock Trader’s Almanac About the Book: Just as the animal kingdom is composed of many species, today’s financial systems are composed of a multitude of independent participants, all over the globe, all influencing the whole. Survival of the Fittest for Investors breaks down the science behind the behavior of these market participants to present a definitive system for building profitable portfolios based on the concept of natural selection. This advanced guide to the cutting-edge science of complex adaptive systems in financial markets tells you where to find and how to track the evolutionary instability underlying these markets. It shows how, with heightened insight and a powerful algorithm, you can survive and thrive in volatile markets by following the simple principles of evolution. Award-winning and critically acclaimed author Dick Stoken punches holes in the outdated, Newtonian cause-and-effect paradigm and helps you see financial markets from a Darwinian perspective, where they function as complex systems that have the ability to adapt. By using his state-of-the-art algorithm, Stoken demonstrates how you can use agent-based modeling to assess the actual way markets behave in order to maximize the upside of your asset allocation. Stoken shows that variation is the key to profitability by using three real-world portfolios, each balancing four major asset classes going back thirty-nine years. Each portfolio clearly demonstrates how to reap consistently impressive profits with lower-than-market risk?regardless of your investment style. Whether you take conservative, traditional, or leveraged positions, this book helps you create portfolios of equities, debt, gold, and real estate that have proven to beat the S&P 500 by up to 22.5 percent! After opening your eyes to the science of complex adaptive systems and the vitality of punctuated equilibrium, Survival of the Fittest for Investors helps you implement the know-how into nuts-and-bolts results by equipping you with such practical tools as: A 1-year/6-month algorithm for accurately simulating evolutionary fluctuations in markets A cutting-edge allocation strategy that takes advantage of our natural “herding” instinct Tips for recognizing and enduring “bubbles” Without Survival of the Fittest for Investors, the evolution of investing may leave your wealth behind

Cost modelling and concurrent engineering for testable design

    No full text
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University. As integrated circuits and printed circuit boards increase in complexity, testing becomes a major cost factor of the design and production of the complex devices. Testability has to be considered during the design of complex electronic systems, and automatic test systems have to be used in order to facilitate the test. This fact is now widely accepted in industry. Both design for testability and the usage of automatic test systems aim at reducing the cost of production testing or, sometimes, making it possible at all. Many design for testability methods and test systems are available which can be configured into a production test strategy, in order to achieve high quality of the final product. The designer has to select from the various options for creating a test strategy, by maximising the quality and minimising the total cost for the electronic system. This thesis presents a methodology for test strategy generation which is based on consideration of the economics during the life cycle of the electronic system. This methodology is a concurrent engineering approach which takes into account all effects of a test strategy on the electronic system during its life cycle by evaluating its related cost. This objective methodology is used in an original test strategy planning advisory system, which allows for test strategy planning for VLSI circuits as well as for digital electronic systems. The cost models which are used for evaluating the economics of test strategies are described in detail and the test strategy planning system is presented. A methodology for making decisions which are based on estimated costing data is presented. Results of using the cost models and the test strategy planning system for evaluating the economics of test strategies for selected industrial designs are presented
