Parallel Narratives? Photographs in Boer Women’s Wartime Testimonies

    No full text
Discussion here draws on our wider joint research about women’s testimonies of the concentration camps of the 1899-1902 South African War.1 Our research has focused, amongst other things, on a network of women cultural entrepreneurs whose activities in ‘working up’ Boer women’s testimonies as ‘the facts’ played an important part in the politics of Afrikaner proto-nationalism until the late 1930s. The research shows that these Boer women’s testimonial narratives, while presented as entirely factual, cannot be classed straightforwardly as either fact or fiction, but instead inhabit an ‘in-between’ area, with their factual claims – claims which may but sometimes may not be ‘true facts’ – often supported by what Eakin (1985) calls fictive devices

The Boer Sisters : Grand Haven memories

    No full text
Dave Seibold interviews the Boer sisters, Cornie and Ruth, of Spring Lake, Michigan about their memories of living in Grand Haven and the surrounding area. Their grandfather came to Holland, Michigan from the Netherlands with the first VanRaatle group. Their father, John Boer, owned a furniture store in Grand Haven and was a licensed mortician. The sisters recall their early years on Washington Avenue and the days when the family first acquired a telephone, radio, and electricity. Cornie became the first kindergarten teacher for Spring Lake Public Schools and also owned and operated the Spring Haven Farm, located at the northeast corner of Fruitport Road and M-104, where Tennessee Walking Horses were bred. She gives details about her teaching career and some of her students. Ruth's husband Elmore Hoek was a dentist in Grand Haven

THE PERCEPTUAL EFFECT OF AIR SACS

    No full text
This paper presents work on air sacs that extends the work presented by de Boer, (2008a). In that paper, and before (Fitch, 2000) air sacs were identified as a likely feature of our evolutionary ancestors that may have been lost because of the evolution of speech. In the mean time, a more accurate understanding of air sac acoustics has been achieved (de Boer, 2008b; Riede et al., 2008). Ape-like air sacs modify the acoustics of a vocal tract in three ways: they add a lowfrequency resonance (near the resonance frequency of the air sac itself), they shift up the resonances of the vocal tract without the air sac, and they shift these resonances closer together. The question that is addressed in the present paper is how these changes influence perception of the difference between vocalizations

Editorial: Industrial networks for resource efficiency

Wasted materials represent valuable resources that we can no longer afford to discard. The concept of ‘zero waste’ is a challenge to old ways of thinking, calling for waste to be viewed as a potential resource with value to be realised, rather than as a problem to be dealt with, usually by burial in landfill sites or incineration without energy recovery. Examples of industrial symbiosis – the theoretical rationale and methods for sharing information and resources across different industries – are starting to be found worldwide. In this themed issue, we focus on technological issues. A short overview of the themes that are discussed in detail in the individual papers is given below. The key concepts of the Zerowin vision (outlined in the briefing by den Boer et al. (2014)) formed the foundation of the demonstration case studies presented in this journal

Estimation of reproductive, production, and progeny growth differences among f1 boer-spanish and spanish females

The study was performed in the Edwards Plateau region of West Texas from the years of 1994 through 2004 and involved data collected on 291 F1 Boer-Spanish and Spanish does and their 1,941 kids. Differences were estimated between dam types for growth traits, fertility traits, prolificacy, kid growth traits, survivability, longevity, and progeny growth. The mixed model analysis of variance procedure was used for all traits, except doe survivability where chi-square analysis was used. The F1 Boer-Spanish does were significantly heavier at birth than Spanish does, but there was no significant difference between the F1 Boer-Spanish and Spanish does for weaning weight. The F1 Boer-Spanish does had a significantly heavier body weight at breeding than the Spanish does (46 vs. 43 kg). No significant differences were found between breed types for fertility traits. Age of doe was a significant source of variation for fertility. There was no significant difference between the two doe breed types for number of kids born or number of kids weaned. Age of doe significantly affected both number of kids born and number of kids weaned. There was no significant differencebetween breed for total litter weight at weaning. For kid birth weight there was no significant difference between dam breed types. Kid weaning weight and pre-weaning average daily gain were not significantly different between dam breed types. Age at time of leaving the herd for all causes was 6.15 years for F1 Boer-Spanish does and 5.56 years for Spanish does (P = 0.06). There was no significant difference between breeds for proportions of does leaving the herd for the three main reasons. Although F1 Boer-Spanish does were significantly heavier for birth weight and body weight at breeding, there were no significant differences for weaning weights, reproduction, production, and progeny growth differences at weaning between F1 Boer- Spanish and Spanish does. When kid production was measured at weaning there was no difference between breeds. However the greater body weight of the F1 Boer-Spanish does at breeding suggests that if kid production was measured at a later endpoint, a significant difference may be realized

WHEN NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT IS NOT ENOUGH FOR SUSTAINED PERFORMANCE: AN EMPIRICAL VALIDATION OF “THE CONTINUOUS INNOVATION STOOL”

    No full text
Hyland and Boer (2006) introduced the “continuous innovation stool”, describing continuous innovation in terms of operational, innovation and strategic capabilities. They hypothesized that the better a firm aligns, coordinates and/or integrates the functions responsible for these areas, the higher and more sustainably the firm will perform. The purpose of this paper is to test the stool model, using data obtained from the Chief Operating Officers and the Chief Technology Officers from 189 firms in eight countries. The analyses show that firms that excel at innovation management, are also more likely to be good at managing operations and strategic choices. Also, and more important, the higher the firm’s capabilities on these three domains, the better their business performance, which is a first confirmation of the “continuous innovation stool”

TINJAUAN KRITIS ATAS PANDANGAN TJITZE DE BOER TERHADAP FILSAFAT ISLAM

    No full text
Tjitze De Boer mentions that Muslim philosophers were greatly influenced by Greek philosophy. This perspective leads him to believe that Islamic philosophy merely imitates, takes, and modifies ideas originating from Greek philosophy. The author sees this view as tarnishing the image of Islamic philosophy by denying its existence. Consequently, it is crucial to conduct a scholarly study addressing De Boer misconceptions about Islamic philosophy. This is because his viewpoint may potentially be influenced by intellectual racism towards Islamic philosophy. Thus, this research aims to provide a critical evaluation of De Boer errors in understanding Islamic philosophy. This study is a literature review, examining Tjitze De Boer work titled “Geschichte der Philosophie in Isläm” to understand his perspective on Islamic philosophy. The author employs interpretative and historical continuity methods in this research to grasp De Boer views on Islamic philosophy. The result of this research is that De Boer perspective on Islamic philosophy can be classified into six scopes, including: the history of philosophy entering Islam, assimilation of philosophy in Islam, Arab knowledge, Aristotelian and Neo-Platonic figures in Islam, Muslim philosophers in the West, and the decline of philosophy in Islam. In examining Islamic philosophy, he does so using various Orientalist instruments, such as historical criticism and philology approaches, with connections to Christianization movements and binary opposition. These instruments lead to a biased view by De Boer, tending to marginalize Islamic philosophy, stating that it lacks noteworthy progress, lacks a tradition of philosophical thought, claims that the Islamic community originates from the Semitic race lacking rationality for philosophy, and presents Islamic philosophy as a mere imitation of Greek philosophy. The classification by De Boer facilitates anyone wishing to study Muslim philosophers from the Aristotelian and Neo-Platonist traditions

The mythical Boer Hero : deconstructing ideology and identity in Anglo-Boer War films

    No full text
Abstract: In this paper the author deconstructs the role of the Hero character in a sample of South African- or Anglo-Boer War1 case study films. The author argues that the Boer soldier, one of the prominent figures of White “Afrikaner” history, has been transformed into a mythical hero during the past century. The key question the author investigates is how the predominant historical myth of a community (in this case that of the White South African “Afrikaner”) influence the narratives told by its popular culture. Starting with the first South African “talkie” film, Sarie Marais, the Boer hero-archetype has been used as a vehicle for ideological messages in an attempt to construct White Afrikaner identity from an Apartheid Nationalist Party perspective. Through investigating the various archetypical guises of the Boer Hero in the films Die Kavaliers, Verraaiers, and Adventures of the Boer War the author reflects on how the various case studies’ historical contexts directly correlate with the filmmaker’s representation of the hero. Therefore, the predominant ideology or the identity that the creator subscribes to directly influences the representation of the hero figure in the story
