Sustainable Strategies in Vernacular Architecture Practices in Sarajevo: The Architectural Ensemble of Alija Djerzelez House as a Case Study
International Symposium on Innovative and Interdisciplinary Applications of Advanced Technologies, IAT 2021 -- 24 June 2021 through 27 June 2021 -- -- 268769Contemporary architecture and the construction sector are responsible for a significant increase in energy demand and its effects on environmental issues. Vernacular building principles, if adopted and adapted, are promising in addressing this problem using sustainable design approaches. This paper is based on an investigation of sustainability principles applied in vernacular Bosnian house and vernacular neighborhoods in Sarajevo. It uses primary sources such as in-situ analysis and aims to investigate sustainable building strategies in vernacular building design and the possibilities of adopting them in contemporary architecture. Particularly, the paper is focused on the Sarajevo region and the architectural ensemble of Alija Djerzelez house, as it is one of the most representative examples of vernacular residential architecture from the 17th century. It was found that some sustainability principles recognized in the example of Alija Djerzelez house and the vernacular neighborhoods, if improved and implemented in contemporary architecture, could become part of the solution concerning climate change. Moreover, vernacular Bosnian houses, if optimized for the needs of the 21st century, can provide outstanding climate comfort which is a crucial component of contemporary architectural design. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG
Underwater survey of alija shoal in lake Plateliai
[...]In 2007 an underwater survey (a total area of 111 m²) was conducted on alija shoal in lake Plateliai. The shoal is believed to have been an island or peninsula before the lake level was raised. Two groups of stones were explored. The stones in group 1 were much bigger and fewer in number than those in group 2. A big stone with a regular shape and a singular location on the shoal was detected in group 1. One side of the stone has water bird-shaped carvings that are possibly of human origin. The location of the stones in group 1 and the big stone allow one to make the assumption that this place might have been a prehistoric sacred site. o excavations were conducted and no artefacts were found during the survey
Construction and Deconstruction of the Figure of a Ruffian (Alija Đerzelez, Mustafa Madžar, Omerpaša Latas)
The primary task of this paper, through comparative reading literary works (WAY ALIJA ĐERZELEZ, MUSTAFA MADŽAR and OMERPAŠA LATAS), is to detect traits which connect the central characters in the above mentioned works of Ivo Andric. In the paper the literary methods used by the author in the form of short stories/novels (i. e. character focused novels and character focused short stories) and the male characters of strongly violent personality, who are determined by their idiosyncracies in regards to the environment from which they came and in which they act and which they influence, without exception, tragically, will also be considered. Alija Đerzelez is one of the starting points when it comes to the violent personality, and Omerpaša Latas is one of the final ones because, as is it well known, this work has not been published during the author's lifetime. Between these two reference points (seen from the position of forming the figure of a ruffian), the whole gallery of portraits was placed, to paraphrase the critics, which are completely determined by their "starting point", but also by the people without the human "ultimate goal". Although these characters are not primarily the focus of our deliberation, we will consider them to the extent necessary to argue the thesis of a kind of evolution, apropos the mimicry of violent personality (Omerpaša Latas)

Social responsibility is based on the capacity to decide one’s own actions consciously, deliberately, freely and in relation with others. Each generation must take responsibility for their actions and the impact these have on sustainable development. To analyse and measure this aspect is of signal importance in advancing the Institutional Policy in Higher Education as proposed by UNESCO. The aim of the present study is to offer the international university community a synthetic indicator (index) to evaluate the social responsibility of university students which provides, based on only 6 or 8 indicators, an effective assessment of University Student Social Responsibility (USSR) at any moment during their academic career. The results of the instrument are sufficiently reliable and valid, similar to those obtained by the initial instrument using 20 indicators. The reliability, homogeneity and predictive capacity of these indexes were tested on samples of second and fourth year university students from a number of faculties. The results show these indexes are effective, offering results similar to the complete instrument.Depto. de Investigación y Psicología en EducaciónFac. de EducaciónTRUEpu
Laser nanosources based on planar photonic crystals as new platforms for nanophotonic devices
Two-dimensional photonic crystal lasers have been fabricated on III–V semiconductor slabs. Tuning of the spontaneous emission in micro and nanocavities has been achieved by accurate control of the slab thickness. Different structures, some of them of new application to photonic crystal lasers, have been fabricated like the Suzuki-phase or the coupled-cavity ring-like resonators. Laser emission has been obtained by pulsed optical pumping. Optical characterization of the lasing modes have been performed showing one or more laser peaks centred around 1.55 ?m. Far field characterization of the emission pattern has been realized showing different patterns depending on the geometrical shape of the structures. These kinds of devices may be used as efficient nanolaser sources for optical communications or optical sensor
The Network of Settlements in Networked Society
Autor istražuje pretpostavke izgradnje suvremene mreže naselja u
Hrvatskoj.
autorova rada u ovom broju časopisa Sociologija sela. Budući da se
suvremeno društvo konstituira oko tokova kapitala, informacija, tehnologije, organizacijske interakcije i dr. autor se poglavito bavi novim prostornim oblikom umreženog društva i pokazuje kako su
organizacija prostora, njegova naseljenost, oblici te naseljenosti u
uvjetima modernosti izloženi stalnim mijenama, dinamizmu ukupnog
društvenog restrukturiranja. The author examines presumptions for the construction of a contemporary network of settlements in Croatia. He founds these
presumptions in the effects of socialist modernization through which
a predominantly rural society was transformed into a relatively developed industrial society on one hand, and in processes of globalization that the contemporary Croatian society has been involved in, on the other. The process of transformation of the post-socialist society is being treated as the process which, by its
scope and intensity, radicalizes and universalizes the modernity that
has been achieved by the up-till-now development. The strategies of
transformation, which the resources created through socialist modernization are being evaluated through the way they are used, are re-structuring the existing network of settlements which is characterized by polarization: the process through which not only the
number of smaller (rural) settlements is growing but also the number
of bigger (urban) ones. Yet, the significantly greater decrease in
number of agricultural than of rural population points at interdependence among the settlements, and in this respect they should not be observed as individual territorial units but as the network of settlements covering the entire national space and being
integrated in the networked society produced by the processes of
globalization. This paper represents a theoretical approach towards the research of the re-structuring of the network of settlements, transformation of social structure and mobility in conditions of transition, as well as of the jobs flexibilization, i.e. it is the framework
for the analysis of the family, educational and newly established class
structure as well of the jobs flexibilization and mobility made upon the results of a research carried out in 2004 on the representative stratified sample of adult population of Croatia (2.220 respondents), and the results of which are published in other two articles by the same author in this issue of the Rural Sociology quarterly. Given that
contemporary society is being constituted around the flows of capital,
information, technology, organizational interaction etc., the author is
particularly dealing with the new spatial form of networked society showing that spatial organization, inhabitation, forms of inhabitation in the conditions of modernity have been subject to constant changes, to
dynamism of the entire social re-structuring
Biomonitoring / Atmospheric pollution in Kosovo is associated with increased DNA damage in the human population
In order to assess DNA damage associated with exposure to environmental pollution in two polluted sites and one control site in Kosovo, whole blood samples were collected from volunteers in two polluted areas (Kastriot/ Obiliq - lignite-based power plants and lignite mines - and Drenas/Gllogovc - Ferronikeli smelting plant) as well as from Peja, representing an unpolluted area. White blood cells were isolated, and DNA damage was analyzed by the alkaline comet assay. Significantly higher levels of DNA damage (strand breaks) were found in white blood cells from subjects living in the polluted areas compared with residents of the unpolluted city, indicating a potential threat to human health.Avdulla J.
