Aoko Matsuda y la reformulación feminista de «Botan Dōrō»

    Get PDF
This article examines the story "Botangara no dōrō" by the Japanese writer Aoko Matsuda, based on a contrastive analysis based on the study of the defining elements that underlie the previous versions of this story. The purpose of the review of these elements is to highlight the subversion of the patriarchal discourse carried out by the author regarding the sexualization of the female ghost protagonist of the story. Thus, while the successive adaptations that were made of the story of Chinese origin on Japanese soil focused the plot's attention on necrophilia, in 2016 the Japanese writer Aoko Matsuda reformulated the story through a feminist approach that eradicates the sexual objectification of the spectrum and facilitates the survival of the story in the 21st century

Radical research as research at the roots: Practitioner self-image, public relations and ethics

    No full text
Semantically, radical derives from ‘radix’, the Latin for root. This paper argues that little public relations research goes back to the roots of actual practice and addresses this neglect through a project focusing on practitioner accounts of their work. When considering public relations ethics, practitioner self-images and cultural values become an essential research component. In addressing this neglected area of research, this paper examines the subjective perceptions of public relations practitioners regarding their role, commitments, and responsibilities within the framework of their specific culture and national history. In considering practitioner testimonials about professional integrity, briefs, and goals, especially as members of the society and nation to which they belong, the paper engages with ethical aspects of the practice from a cultural perspective that assumes different cultures can have different ethical expectations. In revealing the impact of features that are often ‘taken for granted’ in one country, the paper uses the example of four generations of practitioners who served one major institution in Israel to suggest how similar research at the professional roots in other nations might enable knowledge of international similarities and difference in relation to ethics in action

Making or Breaking the Republic of Moldova? The Autonomy of Gagauzia. EDAP 2/2013

    Get PDF
This article describes the process of self-determination and the creation of a territorial autonomy of the Gagauz people in the Republic of Moldova. It also analyses the situation in the autonomy after the change of government in Chisinau in 2009 and evaluates the current status of accommodation of the Gagauz’ interests in the country. Aspects of state-building and the influence of external actors are explored as well. Gagauzia (Gagauz Yeri) is one of the first post-Soviet autonomies. Since its establishment in 1994, no violent conflict has taken place there. However, the Gagauz language and culture remain relatively unprotected, and incentives as well as support for the integration of the Gagauz are low. The article outlines the potential for future disputes between the central government and local authorities, due to continuous attempts to limit Gagauzia’s self-governance and conflicting interpretations of how the autonomy should work. Furthermore, struggles between Gagauz political leaders and other local realities hamper the successful realization of Gagauz Yeri. With respect to Moldova’s efforts to resolve the Transnistrian conflict and to integrate with the European Union, compromises and cooperation through an ongoing dialogue between the centre and autonomy are clearly due. Resolving the remaining stumbling blocks could make Gagauzia a living, rather than symbolic autonomy

Corridor Based Horizontal Highway Alignment Optimization Using GIS and Genetic Algorithms

    Get PDF
Optimization of highway alignment is a complex nonlinear combinatorial problem. The development of an optimum highway alignment within a study area has always been the case for transportation engineers. The wide search spaces have made the evaluation of thousands of alternative highway alignment solutions complex and expensive in terms of time and cost. Search overburdening is time consuming and may not guarantee optimum results. Thus the capability for specifying the fruitless areas may help reducing the wasted time and consequently producing better results. In this study a model for horizontal highway alignment optimization is built in two stages using GIS and GA. In the first stage, a cost model based on land use and alignment construction costs are embedded in a GIS model to narrow down the search space from the whole to a corridor. The second stage, the same GIS cost model are embedded in a GA model to search the corridor for optimum horizontal highway alignment. The alignment configuration of these two stages modeling is based on the notion of station point approach which was previously developed by the author. It is expected that search in narrower areas result in less candidate evaluation thus reducing the processing time and better results. Thus the focus of the search will fall on the optimality of the alignment more than consuming time searching forsaken areas. The results showed that time is no more wasted searching the whole study area and a GIS model is able to define a corridor where best solution is existed through which the GA model could establish an optimum highway alignment solution

Analyses 68 unique titles of Baba translated works published between 1889 and 1950. The titles are held in the libraries of the University of Malaya (UM), Science University Malaysia (USM), National University of Malaysia (UKM), the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP), National University of Singapore (NUS), National Library of Singapore (NLS) and the British Library (BL). The results reveal three periods of active publication of Baba translated works. A total of 18 works were translated before World War I, followed by 10 just after the war, 39 titles were published before the break of the World War II and 1 was identified in 1950. There were 103 persons involved in the 68 translated works, some of whom are responsible for more than one title. The most prominent translators were Chan Kim Boon, Wan Boon Seng, Seow Chin San and Lee Seng Poh. Some of the translators were also be editors, illustrators or editors. There were 31 publishers and 21 printing presses involved, all were located in Singapore. The most active publishers were Wan Boon Seng, Kim Seck Chy Press and Nanyang Romanised Malay Book Co. The translated works mainly cover historical classical Chinese stories, chivalrous stories, romances, folklore and legends. The titles were priced between 10 cents to 2 dollars in Straits currency. The University of Malaya Library held the largest number of unique title (62) out of which 15 were unique titles

A Behavioral Model of Cyclical Dieting

    Get PDF
This paper presents a behavioral economics model with bounded rationality to describe an individual¡¯s food consumption choices that lead to weight gain and dieting. Using a physiological relationship determining calories needed to maintain weight, we simulate the food consumption choices of a representative female over a 30 year period. Results show that a diet will reduce weight only temporarily. Recurrence of weight gain leads to cyclical dieting, which reduces the trend rate of weight increase. Dieting frequency is shown to depend on decision period length, dieting costs, and habit persistence.Dieting, Behavioral economics, Weight cycles,
