L-squared approximations in atomic scattering theory
This thesis is concerned with the use of L-squared or square integrable functions in electron atom scattering at intermediate energies, and tests the success of various L-squared approximations in model problems of electron hydrogen atom scattering. The representation of part or all of the wave and Green's functions by a set of L-squared pseudostates, and the associated occurrence of unphysical pseudoresonances at the pseudostate thresholds is discussed. The original work of this thesis is in two parts. In the first, a model coupled channel problem is considered in which an L-squared optical potential is used to represent the effect of additional (Q space) channels on the first (P space) channel. A method of Bransden and Stelbovics used successfully for a two channel problem is extended to the case of several channels. Numerical results are presented for the cases of two and three channels and the success of the procedure is assessed. The rest of the research presented here concerns the use of the Schwinger variational method in a restricted model of electron hydrogen atom scattering in which all states are assumed to be spherically symmetric. The method is used successfully to solve coupled channel problems using L-squared pseudostates to represent the s-wave continuum. The origins of the pseudoresonances that occur in these problems are investigated and a method of removing pseudoresonances before T matrix elements are calculated is considered. The limitations and instabilities of the Schwinger method when applied to the full model problem with different representations of hydrogen states in the trial and Green’s functions are investigated, and various modifications are considered in attempts to stabilise results where necessary in these more general cases

Prof. Dr Edward Loth — twórca anatomii rozwojowej w Polsce
Edward Loth M. D., Ph. D., prominent Polish anatomist and anthropologist studied physical anthropology and related sciences in Zürich (1903–1907) and medicine in Göttingen and Heidelberg (1907–1912). During the First World War he took a part in struggle for independence of Poland as a colonel in medical service of Polish armed forces. In 1915 he had got habilitation at Medical Faculty of Jan Kazimierz University in Lwów, at the end of the same year became a chief of Department of Anatomy at Medical Faculty of Warsaw University where in 1920 got professor\u27s position. He retained this position until beginning of the Second World War. Prof. Loth was an excellent lecturer and outstanding teacher. He had created rich Anatomical Museum and improved methods for teaching anatomy. His scientific inheritance is contained in 96 publications, among them famous monograph ,,Anthropologic des parties molles”. For investigations on muscles of Negroes he won Prix Broca in 1919. Edward Loth is the founder of Polish Anatomical Society (1923). In thirties he worked as a secretary of Comité International des Recherches sur les Parties Molles (C.LR.P.) residing in Geneva. He took part in many scientific expeditions and travels. During the Second World War prof. Loth was active in defence of Warsaw in 1939 and after that in organization of secret, underground Medical Faculties in Warsaw (1940–1944) where he acted as a professor of anatomy. In 1940 he had organized Institution for Reeducation of Invalids for Polish soldiers wounded in 1939 and guided it until 1944. As a commander of Medical Service of Home Army for Mokotów District he took a part in Warsaw Insurrection and was killed by a bomb in September 15th 1944.Edouard Loth (1884 - 1944) docteur en médecine et philosophie, spécialiste polonais éminent d\u27anatomie et d’anthropologie, avait fait ses études des Sciences Naturelles à Zürich (1903–1907), et ses études médicales à Goettingen et à Heidelberg (1907–1912).

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Square Dancing with the Stars to Enhance Dynamic Hirschman Linkages?
In this Presidential Address, the author takes the reader on a reconnaissance of his life and time as a regional scientist. He points out scenery he found scintillating along the way, hoping that some may pick up the banner and chew on a few of the ideas for a while. He suggests a revisit to Albert O. Hirschman’s notion of key sectors and more empirical analysis related to Marcus Berliant’s and Masahisa Fujita’s notion of knowledge creation and transfer.Presidential Address, San Antonio, Texas, March 29, 2014 (53rd Meetings of the Southern Regional Science Association
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Abelian Groups with Partial Decomposition Bases in L\u3csup\u3eδ\u3c/sup\u3e\u3csub\u3e∞ω\u3c/sub\u3e, Part II
We consider abelian groups with partial decomposition bases in Lδ∞ω for ordinals δ. Jacoby, Leistner, Loth and Str¨ungmann developed a numerical invariant deduced from the classical global Warfield invariant and proved that if two groups have identical modified Warfield invariants and Ulm-Kaplansky invariants up to ωδ for some ordinal δ, then they are equivalent in Lδ∞ω. Here we prove that the modified Warfield invariant is expressible in Lδ∞ω and hence the converse is true for appropriate δ
