Bilingual acquisition data: Dative Alternation_DA-L2 Adult dataset
This dataset is the result of the research carried out by Silvia Sánchez Calderón (UNED) and Raquel Fernández Fuertes (UVa) in the frame of the Research Group UVALAL (University of Valladolid Language Acquisition Lab, https://uvalal.uva.es/) whose Principal Investigator is Raquel Fernández Fuertes. In this project, the research is conducted on the second language (L2) acquisition of English Dative Alternation (DA) constructions by adult learners whose first language (L1) is Spanish. The results are compared to a control group of L1 English adults. An Acceptability Judgment Task (AJT) was designed for both groups to address grammaticality, sentence structure and word order of the two English DA structures.
The two DA structures under analysis involve, on the one hand, prepositional to-datives that alternate as Double Object Constructions (DOCs) (1) and, on the other hand, prepositional for-datives that alternate as DOCs (2). The main aim of this project is to explore the role played by the L2 English learners' L1 in their sensitivity towards the two syntactic variants, with a particular emphasis on the potential crosslinguistic influence effects (or lack thereof) from Spanish into English and the Universal Grammar (UG) effect on their acquisition.UVALAL1.
This article analyzes The Wind of Others (2012), by
Raquel Ochoa, a contemporary Portuguese author
who presents a set of travel chronicles through Cen-
tral and South America, from a feminine perspecti-
ve in search of identity and questioning the native
Other. Passionate about writing and travelling, the
author wanders aimlessly like the wind through
the Andes from Costa Rica to Patagonia in Argen-
tina to emerge in the local culture away from the
more commercial tours. As part of travel literature,
the search for the Other(s) reveals alterity and traces
a critical portrait of the plight of the peoples of Latin
America, which result from the processes of coloni-
zation and globalization. The personal encounters
and adventures blend in a literature of the senses re-
vealing the landscapes, the peoples and the winds
of Latin America from a transatlantic perspective.

This thesis investigates the nature of persuasive speeches made by Hernán García and Raquel in order to persuade King Alfonso to turn his attentions respectively toward the Castillian people and Raquel. Each speech uses particular techniques that are born within the genders of the speakers, and each speech is successful because of these strategies. These speeches reflect the contemporary political atmosphere of the author, García de la Huerta's, literary age and reflect a representation of the events surrounding the Esquilache riots. In this way, the author goes beyond a simple demonstration of the world as it is, but in fact accuses Esquilache of misdeeds by demonstrating him to have fallen into feminine habits of excessive greed and emotion that drive him. The author thus warns Carlos III against such influences that are evidenced in gendered persuasive discourse

This thesis studies the period of the Great War and his aftermath in the life and work of Portuguese painter Adriano de Sousa Lopes. He was the only official war artist of the Portuguese Expeditionary Corps (CEP) in France, appointed in August 1917. First we discuss his motivations, the objectives he proposed to the War Minister Norton de Matos and his unique experience at the front. Focusing on the works of art and unpublished documents, this study examines the many facets of the war artist – the captain and chief of CEP’s Artistic Service, the draughtsman, the etcher, the painter – and proposes an interpretation of his most ambitious projects: the Portuguese section in the Allied Room at the Musée de l’Armée, in Paris and, most crucial, the conception of the Great War Rooms at the Military Museum of Lisbon, where seven of his monumental canvases were installed. This research reveals for the first time the dispute over the Lisbon rooms between the artist and the museum’s direction and its problematic results. It analyzes also the unknown collaboration of Sousa Lopes in decorating the war cemeteries in France and in the Panthéon de la Guerre, a colossal panorama painting premiered in Paris in October 1918.
However, this study is not limited to a specific period of Sousa Lopes. It provides a context for it at the national and international level. A new understanding of the whole of Sousa Lopes’s carrer was needed, as well as his aesthetic ideas and critical reception. Then I explore the international impact of the Great War in painting, illustration and other visual arts, discussing the governments’ patronage of artists and its relation to propaganda. Next I consider the ideological debate in Portugal about the country’s intervention in the war, mainly in the cultural sphere, and the most relevant responses of Portuguese artists to the conflict. One of the central findings of this thesis is Sousa Lopes’s close collaboration with crucial combatants in Flanders, such as Vitorino Godinho, Américo Olavo, Jaime Cortesão and others, who legitimized and promoted his work. But it is also discussed the impact of Sousa Lopes’s works in the postwar years, through his exhibitions and critical reception, whether in the community of combatants or at the institucional level, in the contemporay press or in the history of art up to the present
Power and limitations of environmental DNA metabarcoding for surveying leaf litter eukaryotic communities
Leaf litter habitats shelter a great variety of organisms, which play an important rolein ecosystem dynamics. However, monitoring species in leaf litter is challenging, especiallyin highly diverse environments such as tropical forests, because individualsmay easily camouflage themselves or hide in the litter layer. Identifying species basedon environmental DNA (eDNA) would allow us to assess biodiversity in this microhabitat, without the need for direct observation of individuals. We applied eDNAmetabarcoding to analyze large amounts of leaf litter (1 kg per sample) collected inthe Brazilian Atlantic forest. We compared two DNA extraction methods, one totaland one extracellular, and amplified a fragment of the mitochondrial 18S rRNA genecommon to all eukaryotes, to assess the performance of eDNA from leaf litter samplesin identifying different eukaryotic taxonomic groups. We also amplified twofragments of the mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene to specifically test the power of thisapproach for monitoring vertebrate species, with a focus on anurans. Most of theeukaryote sequence reads obtained were classified as Fungi, followed by Metazoa, and Viridiplantae. Most vertebrate sequences were assigned to Homo sapiens; onlytwo sequences assigned to the genus Phyllomedusa and the species Euparkerella brasiliensiscan be considered true detections of anurans in our eDNA samples. The detectionof taxa varied depending on the DNA extraction method applied. Our resultsdemonstrate that the analysis of eDNA from leaf litter samples has low power formonitoring vertebrate species and should be preferentially applied to describe activeand abundant taxa in terrestrial communities, such as Fungi and invertebrates.Fil: Martins Lopes, Carla. A familial ATP13A2 mutation enhances alpha-synuclein aggregation and promotes cell death
Aberrant protein-protein interactions are a common pathological hallmark among neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson's disease (PD). Thus far, mutations in more than 20 genes have been associated with PD. These genes encode for proteins involved in distinct intracellular pathways, complicating our understanding of the precise molecular mechanisms underlying the disease. Recent reports suggested that the endolysosomal protein ATP13A2 can determine the fate of alpha-synuclein (alpha-Syn), although no consensus has yet been reached on the mechanisms underlying this effect. Here, we describe, for the first time, the deleterious effect arising from the interaction between the ATP13A2 familial mutant Dup22 with alpha-Syn. We show that this ATP13A2 mutant can enhance a-Syn oligomerization and aggregation in cell culture. Additionally, we report the accumulation of both proteins in abnormal endoplasmic reticulum membranous structures and the activation of the protein kinase RNA-like endoplasmic reticulum kinase pathway. Ultimately, our data bring new insight into the molecular mechanisms underlying the interplay of these two proteins, opening novel perspectives for therapeutic intervention
Despotic, tyrannical and arbitrary: the government of Martim Lopes Lobo de Saldanha in Captaincy of São Paulo (1775-1782)
Between 1775 and 1782, the Captaincy of São Paulo was governed by Martim Lopes Lobo de Saldanha. During this period, the disputes in the southern frontier were the major concern of the Portuguese Crown overseas. In this context, the Captaincy of São Paulo assumed the responsibility of enlisting troops and ensure the ownership of the southern territories of the Portuguese America. With the San Ildefonso Treaty, in 1777, the frontier was diplomatically defined with the Castilians. This is considered the beginning of a second term government of Lobo de Saldanha in São Paulo, in which wartime tensions and political disputes surfaced with greater intensity, making clear the opposition between the governor and the local power. This thesis analyzes the Government of Captain-General Martim Lopes Lobo de Saldanha emphasizing the geopolitical issue, showing how his government directives were related to the issues at the southern frontier. Once the conflict were solved, during the remaining years of his government Lobo de Saldanha faced the opposition of the local elite, due to the problems caused by war. And for such confrontation, Saldanha lacked the necessary political skills
