Tämä tutkimus lähestyy kirjaa perinteisestä poikkeavalla tavalla, jossa kirjan suunnittelua tarkastellaan kokeellisesta näkökulmasta. Tavoitteena on todistaa, että luova kirjasuunnittelu antaa lukijalle ja suunnittelijalle kokemuksia tavoilla, joita perinteiset kirjat eivät mahdollista. Teoriaosuus tarkastelee kirjoja tutustumalla eri näkemyksiin luovasta kirjasuunnittelusta. This study approaches book design in an untraditional way, by exploring it from a conceptual point of view. The aim is to prove that conceptual book design gives the reader and the designer experiences that are unattainable with traditional books. The theoretical part explores books by looking at different approaches to conceptual book design. The research material consists of literature on this subject, and a selection of reference work. In this study, the design and content of a book is explored as a whole, where one does not exist without the other. The study starts with a definition of conceptual design thinking, followed by an overview of the history and definitions of conceptual book design. As part of the project, the author designed a self-initiated book on the topic of digital reincarnation. This report describes the process from idea to a final product. The process links the theoretical considerations with practice. The analysis illustrates a journey from a complex topic of digital afterlife to an end product. The topic of the book is first explained by looking at the background research on the subject, then moving on to a more detailed examination of the design process. Conceptual book design considers the components of the book form, as well as the conceptual aspects. By exploring a book from different angles, the study contrasts the diversity of conceptual book design with traditional books. The theoretical and practicebased investigations prove that both the reader and the designer can interpret meanings in ways that go beyond what traditional books can offer

Dead pasts, undead futures : identity and memory in Isaac Marion’s Warm Bodies

    No full text
In this thesis, I study the themes of identity and memory in Isaac Marion’s Warm Bodies. Marion’s 2011 novel is an example of the paranormal romance genre: the novel’s plotline revolves around a romantic affair between a human and a paranormal being, a zombie. However, the story also illustrates its zombie protagonist’s quest for a lost personhood. The author explores issues of identity and memory through the macabre metaphor of death, which, however, is seen as a psychological rather than a physiological state. The zombie mythos has developed alongside western popular culture for the past century. The living dead have been used to illustrate various prominent issues in the public sphere, and their iterations have changed in response to globally remerkable events. Thus, the study of the zombie mythos is also study of contemporary culture. It is, however, unconventional that Marion’s novel is narrated from the point of view of a zombie. This inspired me to ask what is so special about the zombie mythos that makes readers wish to identify with the monstrous. The aim of this thesis is therefore to find meanings for the imagery of zombiedom in Warm Bodies and relate these to popular culture. The central research questions in this thesis are how identities are constructed in Warm Bodies and how memory contributes to the construction of identities. Moreover, I ask what, in the novel’s reality, defines zombiedom compared to humanness, or what traits are required for a character to classify as a living person. I approach the subject through the theoretical framework of memory studies, a multidisciplinary field of study that deals with various memory phenomena. I will use Paul Ricoeur’s phenomenology of memory as the basis of my classification, with some terminology from the realm of psychology. In my analysis, I move from the level of individual memory to the collective. My methods, on the other hand, rely on phenomenological analysis of the novel’s characters. Identities in Warm Bodies are constructed synchronically, diachronically and socially. The author challenges the synchronicity of identity by presenting a dualism of the body and the soul. However the mind-body problem is also issued on a more corporeal level, as consciousness and memory can be transmitted through corporeal means. The diachronic aspect of identity manifests as the characters use autobiographical reasoning to mend their broken identities and personal timelines. In the case of the zombies, their permanent amnesia has lead to a loss of identity. The zombies consume brains in order to acquire their victims’ personal memories and thus simulate forming social connections through cannibalism. However, the novel also presents less destructive ways of developing social bonds: collective memory can be formed through various media, such as text or music. Personhood in the novel is a matter of conscious effort: the past must be deliberately organized into meaningful wholes. Language, on the other hand, is an important signifier of personhood as it enables persons to form social bonds. The final person-making characteristic presented in the novel is imputability: the characters must assume responsibility of their past deeds in order to be forgiven. Forgiveness, on the other hand, is essential to leading a life as a person. One of the central functions of zombie imagery in Warm Bodies is therefore to illustrate the issues of changing identities in social contexts.Tässä pro gradu -tutkielmassa tarkastelen identiteetin ja muistin teemoja Isaac Marionin teoksessa Warm Bodies. Zombimyytti on kehittynyt länsimaisen kulttuurin rinnalla lähes sata vuotta. Eläviä kuolleita on käytetty kuvittamaan mitä erilaisimpia aiheita kulttuurin saralla, ja zombimyytin muoto on muuttunut globaalisti merkittävien tapahtumien seurauksena. Zombimyytin tutkimus on siis yhtä lailla nykykulttuurin tutkimusta. Tutkimusmetodini on henkilöhahmojen fenomenologinen analyysi. Anteeksianto puolestaan on välttämätön ehto ihmisyydelle. Yksi zombikuvaston keskeisistä funktioista teoksessa onkin kuvittaa muuttuvan identiteetin ongelmaa sosiaalisissa konteksteissa

Publisher Copyright: © 2022, The Author(s).Background : Substrate accessibility remains a key limitation to the efficient enzymatic deconstruction of lignocellulosic biomass. Limited substrate accessibility is often addressed by increasing enzyme loading, which increases process and product costs. Alternatively, considerable efforts are underway world-wide to identify amorphogenesis-inducing proteins and protein domains that increase the accessibility of carbohydrate-active enzymes to targeted lignocellulose components.  Results : We established a three-dimensional assay, PACER (plant cell wall model for the analysis of non-catalytic and enzymatic responses), that enables analysis of enzyme migration through defined lignocellulose composites. A cellulose/azo-xylan composite was made to demonstrate the PACER concept and then used to test the migration and activity of multiple xylanolytic enzymes. In addition to non-catalytic domains of xylanases, the potential of loosenin-like proteins to boost xylanase migration through cellulose/azo-xylan composites was observed.  Conclusions : The PACER assay is inexpensive and parallelizable, suitable for screening proteins for ability to increase enzyme accessibility to lignocellulose substrates. Using the PACER assay, we visualized the impact of xylan-binding modules and loosenin-like proteins on xylanase mobility and access to targeted substrates. Given the flexibility to use different composite materials, the PACER assay presents a versatile platform to study impacts of lignocellulose components on enzyme access to targeted substrates.Peer reviewe

Dipolar coupling of nanoparticle-molecule assemblies: An efficient approach for studying strong coupling

    No full text
Publisher Copyright: © 2021 Author(s). Copyright: Copyright 2021 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.Strong light-matter interactions facilitate not only emerging applications in quantum and non-linear optics but also modifications of properties of materials. In particular, the latter possibility has spurred the development of advanced theoretical techniques that can accurately capture both quantum optical and quantum chemical degrees of freedom. These methods are, however, computationally very demanding, which limits their application range. Here, we demonstrate that the optical spectra of nanoparticle-molecule assemblies, including strong coupling effects, can be predicted with good accuracy using a subsystem approach, in which the response functions of different units are coupled only at the dipolar level. We demonstrate this approach by comparison with previous time-dependent density functional theory calculations for fully coupled systems of Al nanoparticles and benzene molecules. While the present study only considers few-particle systems, the approach can be readily extended to much larger systems and to include explicit optical-cavity modes.Peer reviewe

Burden of suspected epileptic seizures on emergency services: A population‐based study

    No full text
Background and purposePatients with acute epileptic seizures form a large patient group in emergency neurology. This study aims to determine the burden caused by suspected epileptic seizures at different steps in emergency care.MethodsA retrospective, cross-sectional, population-based (>1,000,000 inhabitants), 4-year (2015-2018) study was conducted in an urban setting with a single dispatch centre, a university hospital-affiliated emergency medical service (EMS), and five emergency departments (EDs). The study covered all adult (>= 16 years old) emergency neurology patients receiving medical attention due to suspected epileptic seizures from the EMS and EDs and during hospital admissions in the Helsinki metropolitan area.ResultsEpileptic seizures were suspected in 14,364 EMS calls, corresponding to 3.3% of all EMS calls during the study period. 9,112 (63.4%) cases were transported to hospital due to suspected epileptic seizures, and 3368 (23.4%) were discharged on the scene. 6969 individual patients had 11,493 seizure-related ED visits, accounting for 3.1% of neurology- and internal medicine-related ED visits and 4607 hospital admissions were needed with 3 days' median length of stay (IQR=4, Range 1-138). Male predominance was noticeable at all stages (EMS 64.7%, EDs 60.1%, hospital admissions 56.2%). The overall incidence was 333/100,000 inhabitants/year for seizure-related EMS calls, 266/100,000 inhabitants/year for ED visits and 107/100,000 inhabitants/year for hospital admissions. Total estimated costs were 6.8 million euro/year, corresponding to 0.5% of all specialized healthcare costs in the study area.ConclusionsPatients with suspected epileptic seizures cause a significant burden on the health care system. Present-day epidemiological data are paramount when planning resource allocation in emergency services.Peer reviewe

Torque Teno Virus Primary Infection Kinetics in Early Childhood

    No full text
Human torque teno viruses (TTVs) are a diverse group of small nonenveloped viruses with circular, single-stranded DNA genomes. These elusive anelloviruses are harbored in the blood stream of most humans and have thus been considered part of the normal flora. Whether the primary infection as a rule take(s) place before or after birth has been debated. The aim of our study was to determine the time of TTV primary infection and the viral load and strain variations during infancy and follow-up for up to 7 years. TTV DNAs were quantified in serial serum samples from 102 children by a pan-TTV quantitative PCR, and the amplicons from representative time points were cloned and sequenced to disclose the TTV strain diversity. We detected an unequivocal rise in TTV-DNA prevalence, from 39% at 4 months of age to 93% at 2 years; all children but one, 99%, became TTV-DNA positive before age 4 years. The TTV-DNA quantities ranged from 5 × 10(1) to 4 × 10(7) copies/mL, both within and between the children. In conclusion, TTV primary infections occur mainly after birth, and increase during the first two years with high intra- and interindividual variation in both DNA quantities and virus strains

Regional development platform analysis as a tool for regional innovation policy

    No full text
European regions have to direct their innovation and technology policies in the world of ever increasing competition. Right kinds of policy decisions aiming towards sustainable futures are essential in achieving competitive advantage for a region. The strategic choices are especially important because of the often very scarce resources in a region. The evolutionary economic theory has indicated the great difference of the development paths of the regions in seemingly similar circumstances, which manifests the unique character of each region, and the need of understanding the importance of path dependency in regional development. Helpful tools for supporting regional strategy building and decision-making in extremely different regions are needed. In this study, 'Regional Development Platform Analysis' is presented as a method of finding the regional potential for future development strategies. The method is under construction at Helsinki University of Technology Lahti Center. It needs a lot of further development in order to fulfil the demands of a real instrument for regional development. However, this paper presents a pilot case conducted in Lahti Region, where the method has been used as a tool for building the regional science park concept. A regional development platform is a concept understood as an industry or expertise based 'platform' presenting the business potential of the actors working for the platform. The actors of a regional development platform are the firms technology centers, expertise centers, research centers, education organisations etc. contributing to the defined development platform. A regional development platform has to be defined separately each time. A development platform is often based on an industry, including the development organisations and the regional innovation system supporting the development of the industry/platform. The analysis method consists of four phases: -Background study of the region, -expert analysis, -study of possible technological scenarios in the future, -development platform analysis. In the background study, all the available statistical data was gathered pertaining to regional economics, industries and expertises in Lahti region. And if possible, the regional data was compared with the data of the national level. In the second phase, an expert analysis panel was organised. The 30 respondents working for regional development organisations were asked to give marks to 15 industries using 10 given criteria. The same was asked of 13 expertises using five given criteria. The grade of importance of the connection between industries and expertises was asked as well. The material prepared in the first phase was given to the respondents. In the third phase, a brief look was taken at possible technological scenarios affecting the region in the future. Technological changes might change radically the potential of a development platform in the future. The regional development analysis of Lahti Region itself was conducted by using the material produced in the first three phases. The most potential development platforms were outlined for the future development strategies. The development platform analysis was also used as substantial basis in defining the science park concept of Lahti Region.
