Forming ideal types by understanding. Application to the psychoanalytic treatment of suicidal men

    No full text
This paper discusses the application of a qualitative methodology—forming ideal types by understanding—to the psychoanalytic psychotherapy of suicidal men. The paper focuses on a particular phase of the methodology: the validation through external expert replication. Data of cases from psychoanalytic treatment, analysed by the originating group in Germany, is analysed by a group in London, UK, which formed to undertake the task of blind comparison. We describe the contribution of this method in the field of psychoanalytic research, the method developed for generating data and the processes through which data are analysed. We demonstrate the comparative findings from the first (German) and second (UK) analyses and explore the meanings of the similarities and differences. The paper concludes with an appraisal of the strengths and limitations (in terms) of moderate levels of generalisation of results from this method for research in the field of qualitative psychotherapy researc

    Zur Funktion des homerischen Augments

    No full text

Langmuir analysis of electron beam induced plasma in environmental TEM

    No full text
The characterisation of the gas state under electron impact is of high importance for the understanding of materials in-situ environmental transmission electron microscopy (ETEM) experiments. We report on the formation of a dilute plasma state of Ar and He based on the development of a Langmuir probe as a plasma diagnostic tool for the differentially pumped volume at the TEM sample position in the octagon. In order to keep stray magnetic field influences of the objective lens small, and thus the results readily interpretable within existing theory, the experiments are performed in Lorentz mode. The applicability of Langmuir type analysis for the identification of plasma parameters, such as ion density, plasma temperature, sheath extension and electron energy distribution is examined. The systematic study as a function of gas pressure and beam current reveals cold plasma characteristics with electron temperatures of around 0.4 eV and ion and electron densities that are orders of magnitude below the expected values from ionisation cross sections. The loss of charged particles appears to be due to surface collisions at the electrically conducting pole piece surfaces as well as at the conductive parts of the TEM holder

Human mesenchymal stromal cells from adipose tissue of the neck

    No full text
Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) have been introduced into the field of tissue-engineered airway transplantation. Since patients with extensive tracheal defects often require an open tracheotomy, this study investigated if MSC could be obtained from the adipose tissue of the neck during this procedure. Cells were isolated by plastic adherence from the adipose tissue of 8 patients. Cell isolates were analyzed for (i) proliferation, (ii) the expression of CD marker molecules and (iii) multilineage differentiation. The isolated spindle-shaped cells showed a high proliferation capacity and the flow cytometric analysis revealed a distinct population meeting the criteria for MSC. Using classical MSC cultivation protocols the characterized cells showed adipogenic, chondrogenic and osteogenic differentiation for all analyzed cell isolates. This study was able to demonstrate that sufficient amounts of stem/progenitor cells can be easily isolated from adipose tissue of the neck obtained during open tracheotomy. These cells may be a source for future tracheal replacement therapies
