Pendular migration is a daily displacement for those who need to work or study in a different municipality from the one they live in, and in this article we discuss this need that for many is the only viable way to continue their studies. For the methodology we will use the qualitative approach, with the use of the Oral History technique, through interviews with the teachers Maria de Fátima da Silva Gomes and Maria Valrineide da Silva Lima. Used as theoretical reference the authors Ferreira (2017), Anbra (2009), Aranha (2005) for a better understanding of the pendular migration process, and the author Romanelli (1986) for understanding about the educational history of the time when the biographers studied In this way, through the analysis of the interviews and the academic texts cited, we can perceive the need of some people or the majority of people who lived in small towns that did not have all the education modalities to continue their studies, or who were distant from the schools having to follow a commuting path.

Adomo's physiognomical image of Mahler: the convergence of music, painting, and language

    No full text
This study makes a case for the manifestation of mannerism in the music of Mahler through a close reading of Adomo's monograph on the composer, concurrently supporting the theory that mannerism is a distinct style, not limited to fixed periods, conditions in art, or media. The label 'Mannerism' connotes the style of sixteenth century Italian fine art, circumscribed by various art historians in the twentieth century. This study argues that the style is evident beyond the constraints of the sixteenth century, through the investigation of its manifestations in different artworks, created both in earlier and more contemporary times. The argument is constructed from a detailed comparison of the characteristics of the style in the paintings of sixteenth century Italian artists Arcimboldo and Parmigianino, the early twentieth century music by Schoenberg and Mahler, and Virginia Woolfs last novel. The comparison is facilitated by the utilisation of Barthes's writings on Arcimboldo, John Ashbery's poem about one of Parmigianino's paintings, and, predominantly, Adomo's interpretation of Mahler. The study also addresses issues that concern a comparison between different media, such as the problematical nature of the convergence of the arts. For example, the comparison of linguistic elements in both Arcimboldo's and Mahler's artworks is difficult to conduct without implying that art or music become language; the notion of a painterly language, or a musical language is complex and ambiguous. The study deals with the issue of whether one medium has to be fundamentally similar to another, in order to identify common characteristics between the two. In accordance with Adorno's writings on this paradigm, the conclusion drawn supports the position that the style of mannerism can be identified as manifesting itself in different mediums, without the necessity to scrutinise the fundamental connection between music, painting and literary forms

‘There are No Such Great Philosophies’: Contested Meanings of Toasebio Parish in Jakarta

    No full text
This present study aims at exploring the meaning of the building of Santa Maria de Fatima Catholic Church (abbreviated as: SMFCC) or Toasebio Parish located in District Glodok, Jakarta, Indonesia. The author exposes in advance the meaning of the physical elements of the building SMFCC as understood by history writers and building experts. These meanings are not inseparable from the elements of human activities in the building. Through qualitative methods and literature review, the author describes in the Results section, how those meanings can be further interpreted through the existing studies and expressions of the SMFCC Parish Head. It is found that these meanings are contested − from the direction of religious faith and of culture − but complete our understandings of the church which is well-known as an Indonesian cultural heritage and dominated by Chinese and pastors from Europe

Survey of trachoma within school students in the state of Roraima, Brazil

    No full text
PurposeTrachoma, a blinding conjunctivitis, is the result of repeated infection with Chlamydia trachomatis. There are no recent data for the state of Roraima, Brazil, where it was thought that trachoma no longer existed. These data are derived from school children sampled in this state, with additional data collected from the contacts of children with trachoma.DesignA population-based cross-sectional study with random sampling of students in grades 1 through 4 of all public schools within municipalities where the human development index was less than the national average in 2003. The sample was stratified according to population size.ParticipantsA sample size of 7200 was determined and a total of 6986 (93%) students were examined, along with an additional 2152 contacts.MethodsAll students were examined for trachoma according to World Health Organization criteria. Demographic data and contact information also was collected. The family and school contacts of students with trachoma then were located and examined.Main outcome measuresPrevalence and grade of trachoma, age, gender, race, and municipality location.ResultsThe overall prevalence of trachoma was 4.5% (95% confidence interval [CI], 3.7%-5.3%), but there were municipalities within the state where the prevalence of inflammatory trachoma was more than 10%. The prevalence was greater in rural areas (4.9%; 95% CI, 3.7%-6.0%) compared with urban areas (3.9%; 95% CI, 2.9%-4.9%). Living in indigenous communities was associated with trachoma (odds ratio, 1.6; 95% CI, 0.9-2.6). An additional 2152 contacts were examined, and the overall trachoma prevalence was 9.3% (95% CI, 8.1-10.5).ConclusionsTrachoma continues to exist in Roraima, Brazil, where there are municipalities with a significant prevalence of disease. The indigenous population is highly mobile, crossing state and international borders, raising the possibility of trachoma in neighboring countries. Trachoma prevalence among the contacts of students with trachoma was higher than the school population, highlighting the importance of contact tracing.Financial disclosure(s)The author(s) have no proprietary or commercial interest in any materials discussed in this article.Norma Helen Medina, Maria de Fatima Lopes, Shane R. Creating Your Own Interpreting Materials for Use in the Classroom

    No full text
Currently, there are a few excellent manuals and books on the market for practicing the 3 modes of interpretation. However these materials are more appropriate for advanced spoken language students of court interpretation or practicing interpreters interested in polishing their skills. The speed of the recordings (105–165 words per minute) are very challenging for inexperienced but long-term prospective court interpreters. In this article, the author focuses on how to develop activities that require students to create their own scripts and recordings—that is, their own classroom materials—for use in an Introduction to Court Interpretation course. The author also reflects on the problems that arise from having students become authors in the classroom
